It was kind of sad to watch that Argentine golden generation go out in such a limp, disorganized display at this World Cup. Today they were just outdone by youth, pace, and a team with a halfway decent gameplay. There were little glimpses, including in those last five minutes, of just how good they could have been. But it papered over the cracks.

The team that won the 2007 U20 World Cup and then the 2008 Gold Medal at the Olympics had Messi, Mascherano, Banega, Aguero, Levezzi, Zabaleta, Gago, Biglia, Garay, Romero, Mercado and probably some others that I'm forgetting. Add to that the likes of Tevez, Higuain, now Dybala, etc. They've been to a World Cup final, I think two Copa America finals, and won nothing.

Some of them didn't progress into the players they promised to be (Gago, Banega, Garay), but there was a tremendous amount of talent in that group and they never seemed to figure out how to play cohesive, coherent football at senior level together, despite doing it for a decade.

Today’s games fancy the Argies to get spunky against France 1-0.

Portugal and Uruguay will be interesting, Ronaldo will get kicked about. Fancy Portugal to go through on pens.

This is why I lose money

Likely to be a very different game tonight. You can never dismiss any team with Ronaldo in it but I fancy the stingy Uruguayan defence can keep him relatively quiet and secure a narrow win. 1-0 Uruguay

I said the same before the game - be interesting to see if Uruguay shut up shop a bit now.

does anyone still want to say they wish we had beaten Belgium and gone into this half of the draw now out of interest....?

You have to wonder if they'd have had a better Tournament had Romero been fit, we certainly wouldnt have seen the error that Caballero made against Croatia

I hope Suarez bites him, would be funny all round.
  • Stupid free kick to give away.

  • Commentators always seem to wet themselves when Portgual get a free kick, seemingly forgetting that Ronaldo's late goal against Spain was the first free kick he'd scored in about 50 attempts.

Pretty tigerish from Uruguay - a good shape and aggressive defending on the front foot. I like their intensity

Most pointless beard of the world cup definitely goes to Ronaldo.

That's why they've not conceded a goal at all in 2018 and kept 9 clean sheets in their last 12 games.

Just like to echo what others have been saying about how great this world cup has been. Had gotten bored of football somewhat and struggled to care about the first few games of the tournament but I'm hooked now. Definitely one to remember.

Though I think it's messing with my brain, I'm finding Tyldesley/Hoddle less irritating than Mowbray/Murphy. Nurse!
  • Govin is giving a masterclass in organising a defence here. Constantly looking along the line, moving teammates around and reads the game so well. Quality player...

...he'll mess up big time now of course.

Absolute defensive masterclass there. Portugal aren't helping themselves and are very poor going forward but have to credit the Uruguayan game plan, get an early goal and then sit back and let Portugal piss about with it around the box for 40 minutes.
  • Uruguay are going to be a very tough side to beat. Defence is rock solid, entire team works hard and Suarez and Cavani are a nightmare for opposition defences.

The Argentine FA is incredibly corrupt and make our FA look brilliant.

Their when set up is poor. Messi walked away once because of it.
