As for Denly - given the number of players we have tried in the top 3 he has to be worth a go. He is experienced and knows his game well. He is certainly worth a go. His leg spin is an added bonus in Sri Lanka.
I'd say Joe's bowling is more than just a bonus, it's why he's been picked other other pure batsmen. He's there as an all rounder
  • Runours stokes elbow is worse than forst thought even though he came back out to bat today.

Now hear me out here but I don't think him missing a test or two will be a bad thing. He hasn't been in great form and I don't think he really helps the balance of the side in Sri Lanka.

You only need 3 quicks in Sri Lanka and 3 spinners. I'm not sure stokes would be one of our best 3 quicks in terms of getting wickets on unhelpful pitches and there are doubts over how much he can bowl due to injuries. So you have to say he wont be one of the 3 and count him as a batsman only - any bowling he does will be a bonus.

England are clearly worried about their batting and want to pack it out as much as possible. It's likely 2 of our spinners will be in the top 6. Stokes missing through injury allows us to bring in Foakes as the better keeper and bat all the way down to 10.

    Burns
    Jennings
    Denly
    Root
    Moeen
    Buttler
    Foakes
    Woakes
    Curran
    Rashid
    Anderson

    Possibly stone in for Woakes/Curran

    Nice one Canters,

So, i've not been watching the snippets recently, but you are saying that Stokes wont play presumably?. In which case, aren't we reverting back to England type in picking players for the situation rather than the long term?
For me, beating OZ next season is FAR bigger than anything we might achieve against SL - therefore why should we be picking players who clearly wont be playing against Oz ...ie Denly? Whats the point? Lets instead, bring in some players who might have the skill and application to play against Australia ?
TBH, having a top 3 of Burns,Jennings and Denly looks really scary, and could quite easily see us 9-3 very quickly - and having Mo at 5 ......laugh.
This needs some real thought - but that lineup scares me to bits.
I suspect they will play Stokes as just a batsman. Meaning Buttler will keep.

Stokes has been managing injuries for about 6 months and it has limited the amount he has been able to bowl. So even if you thought he was one of our best 3 quicks you wouldn't pick him as one of them. The question is whether his batting alone will be enough to get him in the side, and whether resting him would be better in the long term.

    I would leave him out.

Not sure why that top 3 is any worse than any previous one.

Mo at 5 what's wrong with that? He may well end up batting 3 this series.

As for Denly - given the number of players we have tried in the top 3 he has to be worth a go. He is experienced and knows his game well. He is certainly worth a go. His leg spin is an added bonus in Sri Lanka.
I would suggest a top 3 of Cook,Jennings and Root - which was the top 3 used in most of the last series v India would look a tad stronger (on paper) than Burns,Jennings and Denly. OK, that cant happen any more with Cooks retirement, but having the top three mentioned fills me with worry. I have no gripe with Denly per se,none whatsoever, and i hope he does well, but i just believe if he is picked, then it is on the back of one decent 20/20 game - hardly enough qualification to plunge someone into the Test arena. If you look at the averages of last seasons L2 , Denly has a batting average of 34.5, and took 23 wickets in 14 matches - hardly earth shattering numbers when you look at the people at the top of the averages - Ian Bell at 54.05 and Olly Stone with 43 wickets from 7 matches- and this is in League TWO ! .
I think that if you are going to try to pick a leggie, then pick a proper leggie , say Parkinson (i know he's injured) or Crane or whoever - not someone who can bat and bowl a bit of leg spin- tbh , i believe Joe Root is a very adequate 3rd spinner.

Root does not want to bat at 3, that was why moeen, batted at 3 at the end of the India test series, in county cricket at the moment, we are very short of good top order batsmen, so lets see how Denly goes
  • Best line up , when everyone fit, for the Aussies next season has to be...
Burns,Jennings (simply because we have noone else at moment),
Root (whether he likes it or not)
    Bairstow
    Stokes
    Buttler
    Mo
    Woakes
    Sam
    Broady
    Jimmy

5 quicks is just unnecessary. I would drop/ rest /rotate one of sam and Woakes and use that to bring in a genuine 3. Perhaps Denly.

I disagree in English conditions. With the ball moving about we can bowl them out very quickly. I would say 5 seamers is definitely fine, especially when 3 of them can bat.

Personally think Stokes will end up being a specialist batsman anyway because of his injury problems.
  • Not sure Bairstow is good enough for 4, or Stokes at 5. Bairstow is a number 5 or 6, he likes to play freely.

To me we need a proper number 3 and Root at 4, which would mean either Woakes or Sam would miss out.

Really? We became number one in to the world with 3 quicks. 4 is a bit of a luxury. 5 is just unnecessary.

I'm not sure stokes gets in the side for his batting alone.

Our bowling is our strong point. Surely you would wanna pack the batting which is where we have struggled.

We are a different team now though. We don’t have the quality of batsman to be anywhere near Number 1.

Agree about Stokes, his batting will need to improve if that’s the way it goes. At least he could concentrate on it and not waste his time trying to bowl.

I do agree about the batsman but we can’t even find 3 or 4 decent ones, how are we going to pick 6/7. Woakes is probably as good as a Jennings or Malan and can bowl too.

I think its right about Stokes will become a batsman only in tests .
Cant remember who it was, but an old England Test match player, Botham maybe?, gave a suggestion that maybe Woakes could be a possible answer to Englands opener problem.
(you notice there was a lot of 'suggestion','maybe' and 'possible' !)

  • What a farcical set of warm up matches, when the second one ends up as a 50 over a side match. Has a player ever retired on 45 before like Jennings, as that's considered enough to get him ready for a Test match>
  • I think the selectors will have learnt a thing or two. Denly has played himself nicely out of a Test career, for example.

Not a good day for him, though 5 overs of bowling isn't exactly a proper spell to judge someone! Leach had a good day BUT is more of a specialist spinner, the batting lineup would look a bit short with him playing as well.
  • There's too much white ball cricket for proper warm-up games. They really should make time for a couple of three day games at least before starting a Test series, yet even then, with the weather, how much cricket would they have got in.

I hope the weather improves as I am currently typing this at Kuala Lumpur Airport waiting for the Malaysia Airlines flight to Colombo, before getting the train to Galle on Monday for the first Test on Tuesday. Back to Phuket straight after that final day, unfortunately.

    But 4 overs in a 20/20 is?

Different format. Batsmen have to attack you in T20, whereas in Tests it's about settling into a longer spell and building up pressure
  • I'm surprised the Sri Lankans attacked him so much in these warm ups. They've just ensured an Ali/Rashid/Leach spin attack

I'll also be in Galle for the test. Although we have a problem in that we haven't as yet been able to get match tickets. Apparently they have made a complete balls up with the tour companies! I'm sure we'll get in but it has been a bit frustrating. Do you have tickets already?

Watch it from the Fort ramparts! Will cost the same, but at least you can go home with a good pair of binoculars!
  • I'd still give JD the first test. He is pretty essential to the balance of the side. Woukd say it's between Rashid and Leach for the other spinner spot.

    That's just me though.

That’s the problem with these crappy little 2 day games. How can you say they’ve ensured anything in a “game” like that? It is utterly meaningless.

We need a proper warm up match to get a better idea of who is going to perform when a real Test match rolls around. This arrangement does no one any favours.
  • Burns
    Jennings
    Denly
    Root
    Stokes
    Buttler
    Ali
    Woakes
    Rashid
    Broad
    Anderson

That is how I expect us to line up for the 1st test. Would personally pick Curran over Woakes but don't think they will.
  • Bangkhok and Redman.......i'm jealous.

My dreams are to go to Barbados and see England in a Test Match and also to go to oz for the Ashes - and travel across the middle of Oz through the Gunbarrel highway from Perth to Sydney whilst watching it. I worked in Sydney for a year, and went to a Test match but unfortunately it was India at the SCG - however, whilst there i did experience England win the Rugby World Cup.

Bayliss suggesting that Foakes is in the running to play - and that they will decide closer to Tuesday how they want to set up. If so, would maybe suggest that they might 'drop' Denly or Broad- maybe depends on whether Stokes is fit enough to bowl?

No. There's nothing online, looks like it'll be a free for all on the day. I'll be getting there early.

Which is why i put drop in quotes. Simply because it seemed that everybody thought Denly was going to bat no. 3

Not sure if you have been to ground yet. We have now got standing tickets on the grass bank for days 1,3 and 4. Can't get anything for day 2. Days 1 and 2 sold out.
    Suspecting chaos. Good luck!
  • Been pissing down all day in Galle and forecast is appalling.
