I'm sticking with the same team I put forward a week ago - I wouldn't play Stokes if not fit to bowl but he will get in anyway. Only doubt over who is 3rd quick only 2 of Woakes/ Curran/ Stone/ Broad can play.

Cant see why they would not play Stokes, even if he couldnt bowl. Hope Foakes plays, as if he is successful then it will give the selectors some thoughts about playing Bairstow and Buttler purely as batters permanently.
Burns Jennings Moeen (not that i want him there) Root Stokes Buttler Foakes Woakes/Leach Curran/Leach Rashid Anderson
A truly awful display of batting in conditions that were not that difficult
Burns - unlucky to get a tickle down the leg side Ali - simply not a Test no. 3. You have to be tight and circumspect and the way he was bowled with no feet or head movement is an example of neither Root - gave it the charge and yorked himself Jennnings - you don't cut a full ball off middle and leg when you're three down under a hundred Stokes - played a one day shot in exposing all three stumps trying to sweep. Play the shot by all means but once out of the line of off stump you can't be LBW so why show all three?

A lot rests on Buttler and Foakes now
You are never unlucky to get out to a tickle down leg side. Should either be dispatched with ease for a four or left alone.
Thinking about the future (and not this series), we should dump Jennings (dropped twice today) and ask Bairstow to open. Foakes should now keep the gloves because he is a better keeper than Bairstow and a lot better than Buttler.
The team would look something like this:
Burns Bairstow Root Stokes Buttler Foakes Ali Curran/Woakes Rashid Broad/Stones Anderson

I like that - except not happy with Stokes at 4 - we seem a batsman light there. Re Stokes, his batting average is 33. If you were to take off the magnificent innings in Cape Town of 258 his average would be 30. Not the sort of average that i would like for an England no 4.

Trouble is most of our batsmen struggle to average 33 in first class cricket let alone Test cricket which is why we've struggled with a top 4. You could try Pope again at 4 but who do you leave out from that line up - unless we go with just one spinner or three seamers and two spinners depending on the conditions?
The other issue with playing Pope is that we would have four Surrey players in the side and that's not allowed under ICC rules.
The way Foakes has batted here, perhaps he's the one who should be playing as a top order specialist batsman!
The selection seems all over the place. Denly was clearly penciled in for No 3, has a bad game in the final "warm up one day " and is dumped
Foakes could move up the order but, if he is keeping too, wouldn't want to see him higher than 5 at this stage of his career. And if he is playing he has to keep.
Hold on, where will they fit Pope,Roy, and the other Curran into the team ?
You forgot Stoneman, Dernbach, Jacks, Virdee, Rickeeeeeeeee Clarke etc etc who will all, at some point, be put forward as candidates by our CL Surrey fans.

Gareth Batty, Scott Borthwick, Ryan Patel, Liam Plunkett, Jordan Clark, Matt Dunn, Conor Mckerr, Stuart Meaker..... the list goes on.

Burns out for 9.
Ali out for a golden duck.
And Ali gone next ball for a golden duck. Smashes in to off peg... a bit out.
10-2
Stokes sweeping so far from the ball, awful execution.
Now we have 2 keepers batting at 6 and 7, one of the 3 seamers at 5 and your main off spinner at 3.
Says a lot about the standard of batting in the county championship.

Excellent 87* from Foakes - good job he's not Australian because superstition might get the better of him!
Unbeaten partnership of 15 with Leach of which Leach has made all bar one!
What more can I say.
