The fixture scheduling this year, partially due to the World Cup, but also due to the way the Blast is concentrated in high summer is a right mess. For example Kent have just played a game which finished on Thursday, but now don't play again for a week and a half.

Indeed with the Royal London finishing in May and the Blast not starting until July, this month all we have is 9 days of 4 day cricket
  • I missed this story

Kent want to sign Tom Westley for next season.

    I understand now.

Tragic that a supposedly good thing, getting called up by England, appears to have effectively ended his first class career.

I did wonder where Rayner's arrival left him.
  • With Riley being released I am wondering what’s happened with Kent’s home grown players ? All of our bowlers appear to be imports or overseas . It looks like apart from Crawley all that we have produced recently through the system is wicket keepers ?

Of the first team squad, the following players are home grown:

    Denly (bat/part time spinner)
    Billings (bat/keeper)
    DBD (bat/part time medium pacer)
    Blake (bat/very part time spinner)
    Robinson (bat/keeper)
    Cox (bat/keeper)
    Thomas (fast bowler)
    Crawley (bat)

Coles (fast bowler/bat) and Northeast (bat) obviously came through our age group system too.

That's 10 players currently playing over a period covering a 15 years (from Denly to Cox). That's not a particularly good return especially when one considers that both Blake and Thomas have had somewhat limited success and Cox has yet to establish himself.

There has been a move within the Kent age group system to have specialist spin and fast bowling "hubs" to help identify and coach potential players in these disciplines. There is one fast bowler (who made an age group squad for the first time this year) who has been partaking in these sessions which has partly been the reason for him already making, at the age of 16, a handful of 2nd XI appearances. He is raw and lacks consistency but at 6' 5'' he has the potential to be a real handful once he fills out and hones his skills.
  • You can add Ryan Davies to that list of Kent produced keepers - he seems to be playing league cricket in Newcastle-under-Lyme now

An indictment of Kent over the last 20 years has been the lack of home grown England "regulars". Indeed, in the Central Contract era how many home grown players have been under central contracts?

  • I am afraid BB you are right though fortunately both Robinson and Cox are offering real promise as very fine batsmen.

That Riley fell away is extremely sad. He was never the same player after the England Performance Program. Someone somewhere got it horribly wrong. It seemed to destroy his confidence. Injuries did not help. What is he 27? I hope he does not leave the professional game but is there a worthwhile career for finger spinners anymore?

After signing Nabi for the T20 and then Rayner for the Championship where was he even going to get a game - the writing was on the wall.

I note we brought back Marcus O'Riordan a 21yr old off spinner who was in the Academy for several years for the 2nds - he was preferred in the 2nd Xl Trophy semi final and took 4 wickets in the Trophy final today. Cox with two stumpings and a catch.

Watching on the stream he looked very tidy. We won the final by the way by 17 runs.

I assume Kent are trying to secure Ollie Rayner for the next 1 or 2 seasons and them maybe offer something more permanent to O'Riordan.

There does seem to a very different approach under Downton and a more demanding environment with MacDonald. Overall the message seems to be if you not delivering the performances we are going to explore options to replace you no matter where they come from.

If you look at the 2nds squad for the Trophy final I think there are 2 Australians and 2 South Africans plus MacVicar who has done the rounds with Leics and Surrey. Of the 13 named I think just Cox, Scott and O' Riordan have Kent roots.

Last season we seemed to trawl most other counties 2nds offering a contract to Harry Came who in the end stayed with Hampshire whose Academy he had come through. Had he stayed with the absences of Billings, Denly, Kuhn and Bell Drummond this season he may well have earned a step up.

With the arrivals of Podmore, Milnes and Klassen, the development of Stewart and the emergence of Robinson and Cox I imagine the futures of Stevens, Clayden, Haggett, Rouse, and Thomas will be under some focus come contract time.

Overall the message appears to be the Academy apart from the young man Hadfield AA has mentioned before is not delivering.

What happened to the lads in U15 National Title winning side of 2017?

  • Interesting that Cox kept wicket today, with Rouse playing as Captain and as an outfielder, that's a sign of confidence in his keeping abilities. Just what we need, another top young keeper!

One thing that Kent seem to becoming better at is signing younger bowlers and improving them, as the likes of Podmore and possibly Milnes seems a step up from some of the other journeyman bowlers we've picked up from other counties. Having Donald as a coach is a big draw too.

I coached Came a bit when he was u15- never thought he’d make a pro
  • Anyone know if there’s a dress code in the pavilion at Canterbury?

When you say 'the pavilion' are you talking literal pavilion or member and corporate areas in general?

County Championship matches require jacket and tie no jeans or shorts, one day matches smart casual no jeans or shorts in the areas I've frequented in the last couple of seasons or so.

Thank you. I just literally meant to wander in as a member and have a drink in the bar/ watch from there
  • Planning to pop down to Canterbury tomorrow. Worried that Warks will put us in and we'll be 50-5 at lunchtime!
  • Big big game today against Warks

win this and and big step towards staying up.

Lets hope Essex can do us a favour away at Notts.
  • Kent chose to bat first, looks like a good track. Indeed we're scoring at a rate teams at the world cup wouldn't be unhappy with!
  • Good time to play Warickshire:

Warwickshire have an injury crisis on the fast bowling front. Already without long term absentee Ollie Stone, they then lost Henry Brookes, Ryan Sidebottom and Liam Norwell to injury. And just since last week they have also lost Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Craig Miles to injury, after that pair between them took 12 wickets at the Oval last week. Quite extraordinary. They include two recent loan signings, Toby Lester from Lancs and Ben Mike from Leicestershire who have come in to make up the numbers.

Thanks,  I was wondering who those 2 bowlers were!
  • Solid start. Lets bat them out of the game.
  • 116-0 off 32 at lunch

    Crawley 62* (102)
    Dickson 46*(94)
  • I have a Suspicion that Ambrose dropped Crowley of the final ball before lunch!
