  • Northern Superchargers will be renamed Sunrisers Leeds. The original name was bad enough but to have Leeds in the new name has just lost the rest of Yorkshire. Bonkers!
I think that potential issue has been overplayed, as in reality Sunrisers is now the name of the franchise, and they play exclusively in Leeds.

After all for several year Warwickshire called their T20 side the Birmingham Bears, without massively putting off fans of Villa, West Brom, Coventry etc

The original Hundred names likes the Oval Invincibles and Northern Superchargers were awful anyway, like something the teams on the Apprentice would invent!

At least the Delhi Capitals owners surely won't rebrand the Southern Brave ;)

(Awful name I want nothing to do with Hampshire)

I think you underestimate the hatred the rest of Yorkshire has for any Leeds teams. I was speaking to a fully paid up member of Yorkshire CCC on Tuesday. He lives in Bradford. No way he is going to support ‘Leeds’ he said.

The oval lot were meant to represent Surrey and Kent. Now I would never support any team in this Micky mouse tournament but to think any self respecting Kent fan would support a side whos home stadium is the oval is very unlikely.

Either way, one of the first things that needs fixing is the nonsense of this not being an actual twenty over competition.

With all the investment it’s unfortunately looking like it’s here to stay so we need to figure out how to make the best of it without sidelining the Test summer, the County Championship and the ODI Cup.

First place to look at is how the Aussies manage the Shield, their Test summer and the Big Bash and go from there.

Lot easier to manage 6 team state compos than our county fixtures

Franchise players surprised when they are treated like, well, franchise players. Can anyone recall an instance when one, let alone two, county captains weren't told that their services were no longer required?

May be an image of text that says I didnt even get a text message from the Oval O Sam Billings Invincible es mens captain from 2021-25 via X IB KD Its quite savage really Theres been no communication whatsoever 8 Ao Lauren Winfield-Hill Oval Invincible womens captain from 2024-25 via Wisden Women Weekly podcast irSE esrncricinfo

This is what the players wanted, so now they have to live with it.  They voted in their PCA ballet to sell out county cricket and one day cricket for it.

Very poor not to tell Billings, considering he's captained them in all 5 years, winning the last 3.

But then, I'm not sure who would actually tell him, seeing that they aren't a club in the normal sense, with long standing management and committees etc. The coaches are as transient as the players.

And there was a smiley after his tweet, so it wasn't as if he was hitting out.

I've never paid any attention to this. Under no circumstances would I support a team based at the Oval. The competition is a pathetic money grabbing scheme. So I will stick with Kent, awful though they are these days.

Even I as a Surrey supporter have to agree with you.
I would rather go and watch Kent than watch a soulless franchise match.

Tickets up for sale.  71 days to go, according to the exciting countdown clock :| .

Just when I felt a bit alienated by the Oval Invincibles name they're re-branded as the Mumbai Indians.

    You couldn't make it up.
Just imagine if Charlton decided to rename themselves as the Houston Yankees.

But then I suppose it's not entirely the same, as it's not Surrey or Kent being renamed, but a brand new team which just happens to play at Surrey's ground. It's as if someone created a Charlton based franchise football team called the Greenwich Meridians, and it was later taken over and renamed the Thames Yankees.

What will be interesting is the attitude of 100 counties which have entirely sold their 100 team stake. Yorkshire for example have every incentive to really push their one day cup games at Scarborough and York now.

    Here we go again.
I’m not a fan of the Invincibles rebranding tbh but I will still watch and maybe go if something is on when I’m over. I feel it’s been brilliant for women’s cricket and bringing cricket to those who have never given it a go.
I can see both sides and as it’s not going anywhere just yet I’m going to enjoy it while it’s here.
