From The Times todayAttendances for the Hundred are down almost 20 per cent after the first six men’s matches despite good weather and the teams having new owners, fresh branding and better players.The opening men’s fixtures at the Oval, Utilita Bowl, Lord’s, Edgbaston, Headingley and Cardiff drew total crowds of 89,413 compared to 109,519 for the first games at the same venues in 2025, a decline of 18.4 per cent. Five of the venues have seen a drop on the corresponding curtain-raisers a year ago, although Saturday night’s figure of 11,796 was a tournament record for Cardiff.Saturday afternoon’s game between SunRisers Leeds and Southern Brave at Headingley — which featured England stars Harry Brook, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid and Jamie Smith — drew a gate of 11,628, compared with 12,575 for the first match there last year.Despite good weather, and with the football World Cup over, numbers are down on the 2025 opening fixturesAttendances for the women’s matches, which precede the men’s at the same grounds, were also down in five of the six games.Anecdotal evidence suggests standard ticket prices have risen to about £35 to £55, higher than they were in the early years of the competition, which began in 2021, when admission fees were set to rival those for the Vitality Blast.5

I hate to say it on this forum but cricket was more important to me than football until mid-September. The Hundred and One Day Cup 2nd XI competition kills my interest by mid-July. In the Hundred, I have no idea which players play for which teams and which teams are doing well/badly. Sad.

At least there's a Test series starting in mid August, but very much a "second tier" series. When Australia and India tour, all 5 Tests are now over by the beginning of August to allow the Hundred a clear run. Just turned on, and I see Jonny Bairstow, someone who is Yorkshire through and through, is now with the London Spirit, after previously being lumbered with the Welsh Fire. While Sam Billings is now captaining the Trent Rockets.

My husband likes to watch The Hundred, so I've watched it for the last couple of years as well. We both decided the Oval Invincibles would be the team we cheered on.
This year there are different names for some teams and players have moved around, so it doesn't seem the same. It seems wrong to change so much, when people have built an affinity to a particular team.

Watching a bit of the Trent game on TV, MOTM Ben Duckett (at his home ground as a Notts player) seemed a bit disappointed with the attendance.0

I took my 12 year old to London v Manchester, he loved it, both games, sparked something in him for cricket. Was hugely helped he knew who Sonny Baker, Jos Buttler, Gus Atkinson are, so he had a connection into the game via them, and he wouldn’t have got that from a county game. Add in Lords, and all that goes with a Hundred game, it was a win for him and cricket got a fan.3

Hopefully it will fade away over the next couple of years and we can get back to having a proper 50 overs competition and Test matches being played when they should be played11

Supporters, especially youngsters, like continuity and to generally follow those players from one year to the next. I can see how an affiliation with well known players would work for some, but moving players constantly around does seem rather self-defeating. It seems odd that the Kent trio at the Hundred are playing in Manchester, Leeds and Nottingham.One of the aspects of supporting county cricket I enjoy is seeing players emerge and develop.5

Their marquee signing is from Surrey , the overseas are guys you could see in the Blast and there's minimal Hampshire/Sussex representation (Manny Lumsden, Jof) , No Vince, Coles,Mills,Scott Currie etc.
Just feels like a right hodgepodge.2 -

Just heard Nasser Hussain saying the increase in money is attracting the better players. Talk about stating the bleeding obvious. I read somewhere that Harry Brook will earn £450000 for 4 weeks.
Attendances are down by 20% on average. What do they think attendances will be like when we have a rainy summer.5 -
I often listen to cricket on radio and its remarkable the difference in the type of tone from the commentary for lets say the one day cup, easy to listen to with a relaxed pace and then the hundred with over excitable child like commentators.3
