Will England still be batting by the time Taylor and Leko are doing the tunnel jump this afternoon?

England could gave done without taking the final wicker at 12:30. 20 minutes before lunch to survive doesn't fill me with any confidence
I wondered if there was such a thing as a lunch watchman.

Goes hand in hand with not making subs at a corner in football. 😳
If, by "lunch watchman" you mean someone who isn't very good, but goes in at the top of the order, several places higher than he should, with the instruction to TRY not to get out by lunchtime, that's what they've done, with Jason Roy.

He's there to protect our top scorer Denly. 2 figures is the new 3 figures

In that regard, he's done better than Warner, Harris, Khawaja, Head, Wade, Paine, Pattinson, Cummins, Lyon and Hazlewood.

Denly doesn't look Test class but the one thing he does do is to battle and to apply himself which is the main reason he has yet to get out in single figures this season. Here's hoping he goes on to get a big one here.

In 12 Test innings and the 6 in the Ashes, Denly has only failed to reach double figures once - and that was on his debut.

Yet some people are still saying drop Denly (who has shown that he does have the patience and technique) and replace him by moving Roy down the order instead - even though Roy has neither the temperament or technique to bat anywhere in Test cricket.

Joe needs to stop chasing wide ones after he's played himself in!

Ricky Ponting seems strangely reticent to comment on the fact that twelfth man and specialist close fielder Cameron Bancroft is currently on the field, at short leg.

At tea. In the western terrace there is a match taking place. An Aussie is batting. A lobster is bowling. In the field: A nun. A chef. A krankie. A Mexican. A red hot chilli pepper. Where’s wally and a tin of Spam.

Shocking lbw decision by the umpire and rightly overturned by DRS

50 up for Super Joe Denly...

122 the partnership between Root and Denly but England still need another 222 runs to win

Well batted Joe Denly. 154 balls of the sort of proper batting, that has been missing from most of England's innings this Summer.
  • I’m guessing some will still say denly should be dropped for hildreth?

i don’t think he looked 100% convincing but he has just batted the equivalent of 5 Jason roy innings
  • Well played Joe Denly.

Denly faced 155 balls this afternoon.  Roy's faced 185 in his whole career.

Runs scored, not balls faced. Roy averages 8 or 9 against Australia. Denly just scored 50

Brilliant by Stokes.  Paine asked him if he had gloved one.  Stokes deliberately turned and stared at the screen, while the DRS counter ticked down to zero, then turned back and said "no".

Well done Denly, Stokes and, especially, Joe Root.  Job half done.
