Denly may not be a test batsman in absolute terms it is true but the cupboard of decent red ball batsmen is so bare that someone like Denly with some guts and grit is better than most of what we have.
There are others that deserve to be dropped before him.
Lots pof changes needed but need to start with the coaches, and look at our County game and why there not enough players coming through. Will put a longer comment later on my thoughts later. Although English born and bred half of my family are from Australia and they deserves this series win. As and Englishman I wanted us to draw today and make the last test Very interesting. However, would it have been? Would we really have stood any chance at the Oval? We got liucky at Headingly in the end. However, that was papering over the huge cracks we have got. I am glad we lost today and not next test or drawn these 2, as the selectors and they way they run the cricket really need to look at themselves and see what we do about moving forward with Test crieckte like they did in the World Cup. Too many good players underperforming or not good enough or badly coached
However painful today's been, I must admit, at the start of the summer that I would have taken a WC win over the Ashes as I desperately wanted us to win the World Cup
My forecast for the series was 2-2. Get a win at The Oval, and 2-2 will be a good result for England the way we've been largely outplayed
You would hope that Root would stand down , and acknowledge his shortcomings as captain (there have been too many strange decisions by him this series) - let him concentrate on his batting. It would be great to try to change Morgans mind and get him to captain Englnad , even if only for a couple years. It looks like we have an opening pair in Burns and Denly now, with Root at 3, and Morgs at 4 then Stokes at 5, Buttler 6 and Foakes 7, Overton at 8 (though not sure about his bowling tbh), Archer;Broad and maybe Curran. Really dont think it makes sense to 1) retain Root as skipper or 2) Promote Stokes to skipper.
People say that we lost becaue of Smith - yes, that is partly true, but you must admit, Cummins and Hazlewood are something else - never known such accuracy with pace bowlers since Mcgrath.

I would be well happy with a 2-2 and win at The Oval.
Special mention should go to one player who - for me - has lit up the series so far. Despite the reputation he had at the start of the series, he's produced spectacular figures throughout the Ashes.
His first innings century at Edgbaston set the pattern for the Summer and he only missed a second innings half-century there by one run. He followed that up with a half-century and century at Lord's and a memorable second innings at Headingley - who could possibly forget his performance there? It's seared on the memory. And then two fifties at Old Trafford - 89 in the first innings and 51 in the second.
Take a bow, Nathan Lyon. 587 runs conceded so far. Can he make it to 700 at the Oval?
Morgan is a great leader, but really a white ball specialist - has he ever captained a red ball side for example? 32 as well, so as short term solution.

Red ball cricket is the embarrassing elderly relative that drinks too much, says the wrong thing and farts in the corner.
The tw*** at the top of cricket are cut from the same cloth as Debbie Jevons and her cronies at the EFL.
They want to ignore and diminish the red ball game (in fact by using that phrase I'm as bad as them so here on in I shall refer to county or first class cricket) yet want to get their piggy trotters on the revenue from test cricket, the pinnacle of first class cricket as exemplified by this series.
These muppets have their pet projects like the Hundred which they place above first class cricket. Well, muppets you sold cricket's souls to Sky so have killed the game as originally purchased. You are turning it into an advert friendly circus tailored for Sky and equivalent pay as you view channels and removing it from the majority of working people.
Only REMAIN voters can afford test cricket these days either live or by TV subscription unless you take a punt on fifth day tickets.
OK that last comment was a bit facetious maybe but there is a serious underlying point. When I were a lad Kent played on 9 or 10 grounds in the county so young working class lads could get there and watch live first class cricket. Other counties did the same. The national broadcaster that we are all compelled to pay a licence for used to show this country's national summer game. Test matches, occasional county championship coverage and the John Player league on a Sunday. A lot of people are excluded from cricket nowadays. The clubs do what they can but being volunteer driven largely there are wide dichotomies in meaningful accessibility of the game.
County cricket has to be rejuvenated as it is our gateway to test cricket and vanity projects like the Hundred should be quietly shelved. Do we want to compete in Test Cricket or not? If we do then our efforts need to be directed towards first class cricket.
Sorry for the ranting tone but the incompetence and greed of our administrators in so many sports contrives to shoot us in the foot.

Why are you so keen on Morgan as captain? you told everyone on here you don't like the Irish
Only one round of county championship matches in the whole of August, so really difficult to bring in someone new for Thursday, as they will all have been playing Blast
Bayliss was bought in for one job & one job only, and that was to win the world cup.
This series for us had the feel of a side that was being coached by a man whose heart wasn't really in it.
New man in and new priorities. Think there's talent in this squad. Just need to eek it out of them. Don't think the cupboards too full with alternative world renowned test batsmen and bowlers.

I love Morgs. I remember being at the Grange and personally telling him he was a genius.

The latest in a long line of batsmen - not just openers - who've done just well enough to not be dropped, but not well enough to ever be secure
I like Denly, but he's no better than Malan for example or Ballance

New coach is going to be a massive call.
I agree with all of this. I think a change of captain is needed too though

Not a test player blah, blah, blah.
Not really It'll still be a good couple of days out.

Attention turns to who will replace Trevor Bayliss as coach. Personally I'd go for Jason Gillespie, but I've no idea how likely that is
Could be player/coach !
