Obviously they were eyeing up our weak top order.
Denly just got a whack on his helmet.
39-2.
The last 5 tests when 1st day washed out, a Victory was achieved !
Unlikely this time as this will be a 3.5 day test if forecast correct.0 -
Need these two to bat for at least an hour or so after lunch, then we might be in a bit of a healthier position.0
-
Since Joe Root made his Test debut in December 2012, England have used EIGHTEEN opening batsmen, which is pretty astonishing.
Even more so: seven of those eighteen have played in the current series.0 -
Someone's counting Jack Leach1

I must say the video of the Ruth Strauss foundation along with everything being done at Lords today (even Warne, Atherton, Hussain etc all wearing red jackets on Sky) has bought a lump to my throat.
Having an all too fresh memory of my Dad telling me out the blue my Mum had stage 4 lung cancer and was dying - I can’t even begin to imagine having to tell my two boys the same news about their mum.
Glenn McGrath and Strauss are teaming up having been through the same thing. Wish them both all the success in the world in helping families cope in the future6 -
Leach, Ali, Burns, Root himself, Roy, Bairstow has clearly had a go at some point, Denly and I'm guessing Buttler in that run-chase in the UAE0
-
These two have both got starts, need them to really push on. Can cement both their places for the rest of the series today. Burns was probably already safe, but would almost make his name first on the team sheet0

Deny 30 edged a very good ball from Hazlewood.
Neither Root or Denly were at fault. Roy was as he slightly chased a wider ball.0 -

We also have 7 playing for England today whose first name begins with"J".0

The eleven other players to have opened for England, while Joe Root has been playing are Carberry, Compton, Cook, Duckett, Hales, Hameed, Jennings, Lyth, Robson, Stoneman and Trott.0 -
Realistically, if you insert a team on a day when the weather looks fairly ok, but the forecast is for cloudy, overcast conditions tomorrow, what's the maximum you'd be happy with conceding on day one? 300? 280?0

Hazelwood proving the selection correct.
High class bowling helped by poor shot by Roy.
Peter Siddle good with bat and ball at Edgbaston got rewarded and he got the gig over Starc.
Superb catch by Bancroft.

Another bat hung outside off stump waiting for a ball to catch its edge.
Buttler c Paine b Siddle not enough (12)
England 136-5
Aussies will batting soon after tea, lose a couple of early wickets to give England some hope, Smith then gets in and sets the foundation for another ton tomorrow (or Saturday if the weather intervenes tomorrow).0 -
138-6
