  • Roy has to go. Great one day player, but this isn’t one day cricket.
It is the way we bat.

I think the Aussies should have batted.
Obviously they were eyeing up our weak top order.
Denly just got a whack on his helmet.

    39-2.
Apparently when ever the first day is washed out, the Captain decides to Bowl first in 90% of cases when winning the toss.

The last 5 tests when 1st day washed out, a Victory was achieved !
Unlikely this time as this will be a 3.5 day test if forecast correct.
  • Need these two to bat for at least an hour or so after lunch, then we might be in a bit of a healthier position.
  • Since Joe Root made his Test debut in December 2012, England have used EIGHTEEN opening batsmen, which is pretty astonishing.

Even more so: seven of those eighteen have played in the current series.
  • Someone's counting Jack Leach

    Can you name the seven?
  • Leach, Ali, Burns, Root himself, Roy, Bairstow has clearly had a go at some point, Denly and I'm guessing Buttler in that run-chase in the UAE
  • These two have both got starts, need them to really push on. Can cement both their places for the rest of the series today. Burns was probably already safe, but would almost make his name first on the team sheet
  • Denly gone

  • 92-3

Deny 30 edged a very good ball from Hazlewood.
Neither Root or Denly were at fault. Roy was as he slightly chased a wider ball.

  • We also have 7 playing for England today whose first name begins with"J".

    3 are out already.
  • Burns 47 no. Dropped for the 2nd time. This time by the keeper Payne off Siddle.

    And now reaches his 50.

    51* from 119 deliveries.

    England 109-3, Buttler 5* (7)

You got all seven.  By using the clever tactic of naming eight!  Bairstow hasn't opened the batting in a Test match that Joe Root has played in.

The eleven other players to have opened for England, while Joe Root has been playing are Carberry, Compton, Cook, Duckett, Hales, Hameed, Jennings, Lyth, Robson, Stoneman and Trott.
  • Realistically, if you insert a team on a day when the weather looks fairly ok, but the forecast is for cloudy, overcast conditions tomorrow, what's the maximum you'd be happy with conceding on day one?  300?  280?
  • Burns out 53

    What a catch.

Hazlewood and not Starc for Pattinson
I thought Starc would get the nod over Hazelwood. Just shows the choices Aussies have compared to England with Wood, Anderson and Stone all out injured.

    Hazelwood proving the selection correct.
High class bowling helped by poor shot by Roy.
Peter Siddle good with bat and ball at Edgbaston got rewarded and he got the gig over Starc.
    Superb catch by Bancroft.
  • Tbf Burns hasn’t done himself any harm so far. With what we have that place is his.
  • Buttler c Paine b Siddle 12
    136-5
  • In big trouble now - 5 down
  • Smith can get 136 on his own.
  • Burns out 53

    Bastard.
I hope the umpires took a careful look at the ball after it had been handled by Bancroft.
  • In big trouble now - 5 down
With bairstow at the crease, count to 100 and it will be 6
  • Another bat hung outside off stump waiting for a ball to catch its edge.

Buttler c Paine b Siddle  not enough (12)

    England 136-5

Aussies will batting soon after tea, lose a couple of early wickets to give England some hope, Smith then gets in and sets the foundation for another ton tomorrow (or Saturday if the weather intervenes tomorrow).
  • 138-6

    Stokes out
  • Stokes gone
