  • Nice signing. As long as he keeps fit (🙈) will tear up league one

This is absolutely fantastic news. Jonny is going to be a huge player for us next season, so glad to have him for another year at least.

Not claiming to be in the know about this at all. However, I knew that something was going on today as I was again at The Valley, and today there were a lot more flashy cars around. As I was leaving, Bow got out of his car. I had no idea it would be for this, in fact I was a bit worried. But this is brilliant news and a great way to end the day.
    Were they white Range Rovers?
Nope. Bow drives a black one, but there were a range of different flashy new Mercedes and a couple of Range Rovers.

Either way, this is fantastic news.

When have I heard this before?
  • We could do with signing 2 midfielders that can score goals.

What’s not to like. Didn’t think we’d be holding onto or getting players of his quality given our situation. Please stay fit Jonny.
  • I must be watching a different JW to a lot of our fans.

You don't think Jonny Williams is a very very good League 1 player?

    Glad he's staying.

Would like to see him wearing boots giving decent ankle protection and better shin pads.
I’d like to see him wearing full body armour or some sort of Wokverine living metal unjection that turns his glass boat into Vader than titanium, I’d also like to win the lottery this week despite not entering.

Remains to be seen for me. Hopefully he is.

  • Williams won the Wembley final for us.
I thought the whole team conributed?
  • I agree with @ShootersHillGuru Williams changed the game, the ball was in Sunderland’s half for the last 30 minutes
  • He makes Zaha seem like a stand up solid footballer - diving cheating palace c***oh he plays for us now , top player draws a lot of fouls.

He didn't win the game on his own. Some of the OTT praise for him on here reminds me of that lavished on Tony Watt.

He has fitness/injury issues, doesn't score enough goals and his end product needs improving. He does draw a lot of fouls but sometimes he'd do better to stay on his feet.

I was excited when we signed him but the more I've watched him I've not been over impressed.

I hope he does well in L1 and keeps fit.

I think a high percentage of his 'possessions' end in a positive outcome. That's why we win far more games when he is involved (stats don't lie). The rest is flim flam.

Some stats are pretty meaningless especially given we could barely put out a team due to injuries for part of last season. The only real game changer we had was Lyle Taylor.

Williams is exciting to watch because he runs with the ball which is why everyone is so desperate to big him up. He doesn't score(0 in 42), is injury prone and his end product needs to improve. His stats are not great for an attacking midfielder at this level.

But we win more matches when he plays. That’s all that matters really.
But also, you’ve got to use the evidence of your eyes. When he has the ball he looks better than our other players. Why would you throw that away because he doesn’t score goals? He wasn’t bought to score goals.

Pratley did a good job at containing them for an hour, Williams came on and we attacked. He helped keep possession and drew a lot of fails which stopped them getting on the ball and getting mcgeady involved who was their star man.

i agree that Williams didn’t win us the play off final on his own but he certainly shifted momentum in our favour.

williams is a very good championship player and a class league 1 player. Williams being a charlton player improves our squad and makes us better.

It's a pretty spurious argument to say we win more matches when he plays based on last season and the injuries we had. He played in a number of early season games when surrounded by a strong lineup and missed a lot of the games when we could barely muster a team. His stats obviously benefit from this.

I've watched him play numerous times and I don't find him terribly effective even though on the surface he's exciting because of his pace. I do expect an attacking midfielder at this level to score the odd goal and have a better end product.

People keep going on about his cameo at Wembley as if that is all that matters.

I've found him a bit of a disappointment up to now and hope he is more effective next season.

Really happy with this. Oztumer will be more effective in L1 which means Jonny can be rotated more
Oztumer would have been more effective in championship if he fucking played him.
  • Put JFC and Williams together and you’ve got one player, if they play more than half a season each they’ll have done well.

Williams doesn't score many but JFC gets a few and Pratley pops up with some important ones now and then so there's still goals from midfield. If Johnny could add goals to his game, great. If not, so be it.
Pratley's are all from corners or from inside the 6 yard box.I absolutely welcome JW signing up for another season but it would be nice to also have a midfielder who could score from outside the box for once. Like a Holmes or Kinsella.  Have a dip from 25/30 yards.

So were a lot of Jackson's. They still count. And JFC has launched a couple of rockets before too, so it's not like JW NEEDS more goals.

He was our top assist maker last season. Is that not end product?

We do have plenty of shots from that range, they usually hit the defenders shin who is standing 3 yards away
  • Bet he's over the moon he took the option of extending🤔
  • So much focus on stats and goals.

The question really is does Williams make us a better team and therefore more likely to win games? Clearly that’s a yes.

Can we sign better, or similar but with a better fitness record/more goals? Not at moment.

In a stronger side he’d be a threat higher up the pitch and with goalscorers up front and elsewhere in midfield he’d have players he can create for and who would take their chances.
