Scott Parker Back At The Valley

  • Oh good, the Scott Parker debate all over again. Just what we need.
  • I have been a member on here since the Iain Dowie days and since then Scott Parker would have played about 300 games for Newcastle, Wet Spam, Spurs and Fulham - and also played in Euro 2012 for England too.

I think it's probably time we let this one drop lads to be honest!
  • I hate the bloke for reasons I've outlined many times, he's no good, he couldn't give a shit about us and he had the entire club in his hands, he had the chance to truly secure the club in a way that no other play has had previously, and he naffed it.

So I hope he has a dreadful time returning, but he's cold you can see it, he's removed his emotions many years ago, so it won't affect him at all.

  • The team can’t hear your support if you are watching at home on Sky.

Not unless you live real close to the Valley and if you do, get your arse down the ground.
Yep,  if only the fans had been louder,  this run of one win in 16 would have been much better and we’d be half way up the table
  • edited January 2020
If he’d have stayed and played against Gills in the cup (we lost) I  think it was next round or two we’d have had the scum and stopped them getting to the FA Cup Final and it would have been us losing to Man Utd in the final .

ok we’d have lost to the scum
We lost against Gillingham at the start of January

Parker left at the very end of that month
He refused to play , downed tools
Never realised that as he played against Man City and Wolves after that Gillingham game

Of course then didnt ever play for us again so thought it was after Wolves he downed tools
  • S Parker best ever Cafc player produced.
  • Spoke to Curbs about it a few years ago and he said Scott was a petulant wally (a bit more industrial) about it all but Curbs wanted him to hang till the end of the season and nothing he could do or say would work and he wanted Murray to turn it down but he also understood chance of a lifetime and all that .
I’ve never booooo’d him and totally understand him going just his behaviour about how he went about it grates with me .
I do remember encouraging him to shoot when he played for Newcastle and he banged it in from 25-30 yards .
  • Probably only 2nd to Bowyer as the best homegrown player I've seen in my 45 years supporting this club.

Still dislike him though. Just remind me ....how did his illustrious Chelsea career go....??
    Best home grown player.

People forgot how many games he played for us as well. He wasn’t like a Gomez or a Lookman, who racked up 20 games, 40 games and get all the #MadeInCharlton adulation stuff.

Parker played 130 times for us and busted his guts out in every single one of them. The bloke left everything on the pitch, every game.
Had this debate so many times over the years! Totally agree with you mate-people really need to move on. He was brilliant for us in over 130 (mostly top flight) games and, although he didn’t leave in great circumstances, it was over 15 years ago!

And all this we could have made the Champions League stuff or “it was the start of our current decline” (really?) is rubbish. We fell away the seasons previous with Parker In the team so there’s no guarantee we have finished any higher than 7th. And we stayed in the Premier League for another few seasons after he left.

I hate the stick that he gets when he plays/manages against us and, after the shit that Grant and Fox got this season, it’s inevitable that he’ll get plenty on Wednesday from lots of people who probably didn’t even see him play. I can’t be doing with all that negativity and will be at home watching it on the red button.
So will you be turning it off when any anti parker chants start just in case it upsets you ?
I’ll watch on mute with one of my pan pipe albums on in the background.
  • One of the best ever at Charlton,If he had stayed half a season longer,he would have been a legend and in my opinion was the natural succesor to Roy Kean at united.
  • It's move on as far as I am concerned. I won't boo him, nor will I clap him.

    Thanks for joining in. :)
  • I think the ‘downing tools’ it’s been proper exaggerated over time and Parker painted overtly as the villian. You forgot this was an evolving time in football where player and agent Power was emerging and old school managers like Curbs struggled to deal with that. He adapted the next summer by ripping up Di Canio’s contract so he could leave on a free as he knew that an unhappy Di Canio recused a move would be impossible to manage.

From what I heard once Chelsea come in for him he asked to be allowed to go, then sulked in training for a couple of days when it was originally rejected. If we had a list of players who sulked in training, never turned up for training, stormed out the training ground, it would be as big as the takeover thread.

if I remember correctly the first couple times he returned he didn’t actually get that bad a reception and appreciated the crowd well. Bit like the ‘Charlton fans forced Curbishley out’ nonsense, the hate seems to have grown over the years.

We got £10m for him, that must be equivalent to £60-70m in today’s football money. Defoe, England striker, went from West Ham to Spurs the next day was only £7m. We got a very good deal for him so it was hardly like we were mugged off as a club.

That £10m was used to fund the next season’s signings, which Curbs arguably could have spent better (Murphy, Jeffers, Rommedahl, El Kharkouri, Hughes).

I was as gutted as anyone when he left and I think we all agree it derailed his career and he never reached the heights he could have as a result of it.

But there is so much serious shit in the world I can’t for life of me understand why people want to carry around so much poisonous hate for an individual who was absolutely brilliant for us, worked his arse off and then had his head turned at the age of 23 by the 2nd biggest club in the country wanting to x5 his wage.
His every touch was booed on his first game back against us (for Newcastle) and when he scored he ran the full length of the pitch back towards the Jimmy Seed as a stick your booing.
  • my views on Parker have changed, used to be anti, not quite proud of what we produced. I think we got his best years, I don't think he was ever as dynamic after the ankle injury at Chelsea, and I get why he wanted to move.

Which is the reason I wouldn’t give him the steam off my piss.

The way he left, when we were so close to being the best we’ve ever been.

He knew exactly what he was doing and it was the beginning of a decline we’re still trying to dig ourselves out of.

I will never welcome him back. But if I was there I’d turn my back rather than boo him. He doesn’t deserve any effort booing would take.

    Prick.
So do you also hate Paulo di Canio, who downed tools and demanded we release, him after just 30 games and having just signed a contract extension?

No one seems to find Di Canio a prick, the opposite it seems.
Is Paolo Di Canio the most misspelled Charlton player ever? Would love to know why.
    No, that’s Paul Konchelskis
I've got news for you boss it's Josh Davison being constantly misspelt Davidson 😏
Dennis Rommedahl used to catch a few out too.
I remember being at a game, can't remember which one, but every time Dennis got near the ball some bloke near me would scream 'RUN RAMMA DAL!'. Hilarious for a bit but then extremely annoying

    Nope, because PDC wasn’t CAFC.
He played for himself, throughout his career.
You knew what you were getting the minute he signed.
My surprise was that he actually bothered to play for us at all. Many of his type don’t.
    No comparison, Smudge, disappointed 😘

Scott Parker played 128 games for us and we got £10m for him. Joe Gomez played just 21 games and was sold for £3m. We spent the same time nurturing that talent but the rewards we received on and off the pitch were totally different. And yet one is a Judas and the other is a hero.

We could go into the fact he downed tools etc etc but then we could talk about release clauses etc etc which is the other side of this well worn debate.

  • I do remember encouraging him to shoot when he played for Newcastle and he banged it in from 25-30 yards .
I remember that goal too, OoohAaaargh.

But I didn't know it was all your fault that Parker scored.

  • I find the whole situation quite sad really.  Parker could have been a Charlton legend.  If he'd behaved in a similar way to Scott Minto when he went to Chelsea, he'd be held in similar high regard.  Instead, he acted rather unprofessionally and now he's about as popular as Darren Pitcher was.  (For the record, I liked Darren Pitcher as a player and thought the treatment he got after he left was out of order)

There are certainly a small but significant minority of nob-ends in the Charlton crowd who would boo any ex-player, but Parker has made his bed, he'll have to lay in it forever now.

The difference between Parker and Do Fabio was the timing of when they 'downed tools. Di Canio (and Jensen) did it at the end of the season. They did not do it in Januray when we were 4th and nearer 3rd in the table than we were 5th.

You also have to remember that Di Canio was going back to Lazio, to help out the club he supported all his life and apparently took a big pay cut to do so.
