I hadn't realised that Bowyer was less than 4 years older than Parker. Looking back, both had rather disappointing medal hauls in their career
Parker - 2nd division winner with us, Intertoto cup (which barely counts) with Newcastle. 18 England caps Bowyer - League Cup winner with Birmingham. Just 1 England cap (that's fewer than Paul Konchesky!)
So 1 major honour between them. Might be a good quiz question, the Charlton youth/academy player with the most major honours.
But Parker was recognised by supporters, players and journalists alike with the following:
Jessie: Parker was never captain of England. He made 18 appearances and was during that time made reserve captain to John Terry.
Not saying that I would boo but he deserves it more than Murphy imo, and he got massive stick at Fulham some years ago.
He captained England against Holland in Feb12, remember feeling quite proud. Never been angrier at a football match than when his face appeared on the big screen at Chelsea and I do believe him leaving started our decline but I don't believe Scott Parker was responsible for our decline as he wasn't properly replaced. Anger long since subsided find it sad some people still are. I prefer to remember him being the best payer I've seen playing for Charlton in the last six months he was with us but then I embrace the positive rather than the negative.
Ok, one match. I got that wrong.
Can't understand why that would make a Charlton fan proud. One match was just a fluke because Terry was in legal trouble. He was just a stand in, not the real captain.
I was told this last night by someone who was a director at the time. We offered him £19,000 a week Chelsea offered him £45,000 a week.....end of I guess.
I told anyone that would listen we should have signed Bowyer after both parker and Murphy left
Iwas told at the time that on that particular deadline day we had Michael Carrick ready to sign at the Valley but we baulked at the 3m asking price. Wonder what happened to him. Spent 100k on Jerome Thomas instead.

That’s a difference of over 4m on a 3 year deal, which was my point earlier in the thread. Who wouldn’t take it to do the same job.

We have spent the best part of the last 12 years moving between the second and third division. Clubs of our level rarely produce players that go on to England and have full Premier League careers, let alone ones that have the England captains armband (even if it was just one game).
Whether you like Parker or not, it absolutely is something that we and our academy should be proud of.
He's a piece of shit .... No class, no honour, no integrity .... he represents the pinnacle and the beginning of Charlton's fall from grace, heights of which we probably won't ever see again, unless the ESI boys and 100 things all come together over many, many years.
I hope the next time he gets on a train he trips, and really hurts his shin.
