So this controversial character as dubbed by the DM (critics obviously) has a huge list of misdemeanours!  Including, wait for it, “wearing his own brand of clothing” and “presenting in his pants”.

Jesus we have some Karen’s amongst us, would somebody please think of the children!!

    I was literally thinking this.

Go on about gammons and people foaming at the mouth constantly, almost always about hypothetical scenarios.

Only one group of people I've seen going mental on social media over the past week, and they ain't people on the right  :D
Great post mate guess you trumped em. Maybe they had an overflow of froth and wanted to share it out.

I think people including me who don't watch MOTD do so as their sick of the wall to wall coverage of the premiership and the time given to the top 6 clubs.

I don't mind him but think he's out of touch with current affairs with a good proportion of the public. Therefore should keep his gob shut.
I like Gary Lineker and his views are very much in line with many of the public. It depends on the media you follow.
Indeed but I have enough nous and experience in life without constantly been told how I should think by social media.

In my view he cares about the people on the same wavelength as the likes of James o brien who fools so many gullible people ... And that is after painstaking on the odd occasions listening to THEM not the media I follow....

In my view of course. If that's OK.
Remind me what any of that has to do the abilities of someone to link present a show (which he is a consummate natural at)?
Cos they both talk shit. In my view of course. And I was replying to a reply to an earlier reply.

There was a pretty strong rumour that he was shagging Colin Montgomeries wife. I can’t remember what open it was (possibly RSG) but Lineker used to present the Open. Their paths crossed before Monty was about to tee off and Monty went for him. A brawl erupted and Monty damaged his hand or finger. Think he had to WD during the round off the back of it.

  • If anyone is interested in what they said about the Lineker suspension and the subsequent MOTD episode at the time you can check it out on this thread.

    https://forum.charltonlife.com/discussion/95739/lineker-and-attenborough/p18

    Page 18 onwards really.

It largely follows the same pattern on here with many, not all, who are clearly on the political right, finding that the MOTD in question was better than before. And probably vice versa being honest.

Not seeing a firm correlation between one's political views and whether MOTD was improved, or not, without him (or any other pundit) is denying the reality tbh.

Here's what I said - "I did watch MOTD, I always do, and it was a very weird, and different, experience without the theme tune, commentary, between game chit chat, etc. I didn't miss Danny Murphy but I suspect few Addicks would tbh."
  • Everyone is entitled to their views. Gary Lineker doesn't discuss his political views on MOD, so why shouldn't he express them elsewhere. He is a football presenter for the BBC, not a BBC political reporter. It would be different if he presented a news or political programme.
Of course he's entitled to have opinion, but there are things that need addressing.

He works for the BBC, an establishment who claim to be unbiased. Lineker is an ambassador for that organisation, also some folk aren't able to separate the two.

We live in democratic country, a country where you can legitimately vote for say the far right. If you allow members of staff to talk about centre left politics, then you should in theory allow them to talk about any political viewpoint.

Loads of companies request that employees keep political views out of the public domain.

  • Surprised people like Mark Chapman. The way he presented the Olympic highlights was just amateur.
He's an excellent football presenter. He's really good on MOTD2
I prefer MOTD2 to MOTD because of him.

I've gone back to the original thread via the link in Bournemouth Addick's post above, and in it we are reminded that Gary Lineker is not an employee of the BBC, he is freelance.

A large swathe of BBC employees are self employed, they changed this a few years back. Probably around the time it all went to Manchester and NBH. It was supposed to be a cost cutting thing.

Anyway, the BBC pay his wages and the BBC are part funded by a licence fee. It's TV tax essentially.

I am sure he'll go and nosebag somewhere else.  He cannot help himself spouting off at something or another.  More time to take in a few illegals into his own mansion.

"Illegals".  What a ridiculous thing to say.
Well, lovey dovey. Ask the 'Legal' immigration applicants.
  • There could soon be an interesting vacancy for Saint Gary, I believe the Archbishop of Canterbury is clearing his diary as we speak.

  • I hope the new presenter is a female.
    Alex Scott?
    Gabby! One of the best!

I assume you posted this after the post above it to be ironic?

Funny innit. You know full well that if Lineker was advocating right wing policies, those with steam coming from under their collars who don't know the difference between illegal and asylum seeker would be hanging on his every word, not moaning on about people in sport/media/the public eye keeping out of politics...
and if he was he’d be getting exactly the same sh*t from those on the opposite side of the fence.

Never understand how so many people get triggered by Lineker having an opinion.
As you say, if Lineker spouted views similar to Nigel Farage or Laurence Fox then Algarve would be very vocal to say that he should keep his gob shut.

I think that Lineker was a superb talent and we were lucky to have had him in the England team. I also think that he presents MOTD well, not that I watch it when Charlton aren't on it.

Having met him at a press conference for the FA, I found him rude and obnoxious as a person, so the less i hear of him, the more i like it..

I don't think I have ever suggested that a right winger keep their gob shut, their rantings are usually the best weapon to use against themselves. Huskaris suggesting that no-body is foaming about Lineker has been nicely undermined on here since he wrote that, but I was actually talking about the real world, not just the CL bubble and not just what's been said yesterday - loads of ears steaming on other social media outlets, and plenty of fist shaking over the past few years.

As we are talking politics, though most of us (on both sides) have tried to avoid it for a while now. Certain people seem to think that just because someone happens to be born on the same patch of land as them, they deserve to be shown more compassion and understanding. A rapist from Woking should be treated better than a doctor from Damascus? Is that what you think? It's not is it.

Despite what the right would have you believe, the vast majority of asylum seekers want to work, they should be allowed to - then the burden reduces. The cost of keeping them actually comes out of the overseas aid budget, so what gets spent in the UK doesn't go elsewhere. If the last government had not deliberately let the speed of the asylum process get worse and worse (let's see if this one is any different - the jury is out) in order to create outrage from people too simple to see through it, then there would not be this backlog. The quicker they are processed the quicker they can work and become an asset rather than a burden. Surely even the slowest among us can understand that?

If there was a way for asylum seekers to register a legitimate claim before setting foot on UK soil (say at the embassies in various countries), it would cut the number of people on boats, the people smuggling and the deaths. Plus those who cannot understand the differnece between an illegal immigrant and asylum seeker, wouldn't need to tax themselves with the problem.

If they all stopped at the first safe country they came to, it would be overwhelmed - it's only fair that the burden is shared, and if you stop believing the headlines, and look at the stats, the UK takes less people in than many others worldwide.

Final word (and I won't be taking questions). Often I hear "Why are they mostly young men". Well imagine ISIS or whoever is marching into your town, who do they want to recruit? You are a thirty year old bank clark or a computer programmer and suddenly they are telling you they want to train you up and get you shooting at your non-muslim mates. What would you do? Crack on with it and claim you were only following orders? Or I have heard it suggested they should fight back. Again, think about it, your son, the roofer - you expect him to fight back against highly trained militia with a fork tied to the end of broom handle? No, of course not, you would want him to get out, and if he had relatives and friends in a country where he also already knew some of the language (that's often English) where are you going to suggest he tries to get to?

Of course we need to identify the criminals and the rotten eggs, but we still maintain innocent until proved guilty in the UK, and that has to apply to everyone.

As I said, last word from me on the subject, back to avoiding politics now.

Far too many facts, they like to communicate in grunts and The sun headlines.

As for 'fighting age men' you've only got to look at Ukraine to see that, that can be anything from 19-60. Not sure many 95 year olds would be in a fit state to travel across the world to safety... again that suits no agenda though.
  • I never really care who presents these things, I tend to watch the highlights and fast forward the analysis.  I did however like the camaraderie between him, Shearer and Wrighty.  But things move on, I hope they don’t change the format, it’s still my go-to for premier highlights.
Exactly what I do, and I record MOTD 2 on Sunday so have not seen Lineker on my screen for years
  • Odd thing with Lineker is I can't stand him on TV but I do enjoy The Rest Is Football podcast. Perhaps it's because I can't see his smug little smirk when he does one of his shite jokes.

Would like to see Chapman get the gig.
  • Gary Lineker has stepped down as co-presenter of the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year, following the news that he will leave Match of the Day, the corporation has confirmed.
