Ignoring the disallowed Reading goal, Chuks has scored twice for us and both times were after 80 minutes with him having come off the bench for the last half an hour or so. Wouldn't be too disappointed to see a bit more of that, depending on who can stay the fitter between him and Bogle
  • I’m happy to win 1-0, or any other grubby score for the next few weeks. I think stopping the other team from scoring is the key thing while the midfield and forwards figure each other out.

If we’re still playing like this in mid November, I’ll be worried, but for now, clean sheets and the odd goal is enough, even if it ain’t pretty.

It feels like 20 clean sheets might happen rather that any one getting near 20 goals.
I struggled to get use to league 1 again but I was impressed with our new defence.
Gunter, Innes, Famewo, maatsen are a step up on any other back 4 this season.
Having Alfie Doughty who can play in about 5 different positions is an added bonus.

I have finally put my finger on who Bowyer reminds me of as a manager.

    Eddie Jones.

Protect the new back four, get used to each other.  Build confidence, not only between the defenders but confidence in them with the more expansive players.  So they know if they give the ball away its not an automatic goal against us.

Watson & Pratley have done a great job letting the back 4 settle.  Once it's properly bedded in the hand break will come off sooner rather than later.  2 1-0s with a scratch team is a good start, isn't it?

As soon as Blackpool had a man sent off my eyes rolled and I braced for an incoming coach parking on Broomfield roads pitch

That was a good away from home performance against a game Blackpool. Doughty again proves his footballing maturity and intelligence, he had the Blackpool left back on toast before purringtons idiotic second booking and having to shuffle over to cover

Shinnie feels like he has played for us for ages, simple footballer but uses the ball so well and always ready to receive the ball. Going to become a lot of peoples favourite player

Bogle will get goals, really impressed with him and Washington for different reasons

Special mention for the defence. Giants all of them. I've already forgot Ryan Innis ever played for Palace and I'm tightly crossing my fingers that Norwich don't realise what a genuinely class centre half Famewo is and decide they need him back.

Great result, we have goals in us just need to hit a stride

We've gone from having a shaky defence to a potential back four which is absolutely solid.

This. I actually thought Bowyer was using Pratley to babysit Watson until he finds his feet.
But I think you may be right. He's using the pair of them to babysit the back four.
On tonight's performance, I'd say they're old and ugly enough to fend for themselves

Chuks header was better than first appeared. He really bent those neck muscles and kicked his leg high as possible to generate maximum height and pace.

Shout out go Shinnie for some excellent  corners! We normally rant about this wasteful opportunity but be really has an accurate whip on him!
Agree on the corners.  At last we are making use of them now.  And Smyths long throw is pretty useful too.

Is it pronounced Smy the....or Smyth (Smith)?
Well, I can't think of another word in the English language with a y that gets pronounced like the i in Smith, but still everyone will do so anyway.

It should be Smyth pronounced like sky, sly, sty, scythe, shy but it's probably the player who says it's pronounced otherwise.

Some people can't even spell their own name correctly.
You sound like the people who tell me my name is Caylum not Callum.
    Not at all.

It's just that I've taught English pronunciation. There are words with a y that are pronounced otherwise. Examples:

    Syringe
    Busy
    You

I don't think that it ever has the sound of 'ni' as in 'The Knights that say ni'
From anyone who claims that Smyth is pronounced like Smith I demand a shrubbery.
And it's 'only' a few centuries ago that Smith was pronounced Smeeth.

I remembered reading something about the 'Great Vowel Shift' in the English language - and how it evolved from a French like pronunciation of vowels to what we have today in modern spoken English. Something like that.

I know, it's exactly what people want to read on a football match thread.

    A back 5 of
    Amos
    Gunter Inniss Famewo Maatsen

Looks incredibly strong and mobile, especially in League 1

I'm hoping once they are all fit the likes of Shinnie, Maddison and Gilbey will have the vision and technique to unlock defences, we just need the attackers to perform

Trying not to get too carried away but if there is a better centre half pairing in this pub league than Inniss and Famewo then I would be surprised. With Gunter and the little Dutch wizard Maatsen we may well have the best back line as well. If they all stay fit for most of the season we will cruise this league. Inniss is a monster.

What's the lowest number of goals conceded in a full 46 game season for the Champions?
Watson much, much better tonight - once fully fit he will be a mainstay in defensive midfield (apart from his regular inevitable suspensions of course). No issues with midfield in general and with Gilbey, Maddison and Williams to come even better. I still think Smyth is going to be a big player this year.
Great for Chuks to score and hopefully that will be a turning point - he looked noticeably fitter when he came on that when he started on Saturday and every minute on the pitch will help in that. Bogle also showed more promise and perhaps needs a goal to get his confidence back. Assuming we don't get plagued with injuries then January must focus on getting another striker.

Don't know if these are the records but:

Wigan only conceded 25 in 2002-03 (they only lost 4 games and they never let in more than 2 in a game) so to beat that we would have to let no more than 19 in 40 games which we will be hard pressed to do

Doncaster only scored 62 in 2012-13 and we could score less than that and still be champions given that they let in 44 that season in winning the division

Just watching the Purrington second yellow and it is so soft, the ref took opportunity to even the game up, that said Maatson looked good and I can’t see Purrington getting back in unless we rotate.

Bowyer has nothing to complain about re: the Purrington second yellow. It was absolutely stonewall imo, and most of our fans on here saw it that way too

I must admit that I wasn't expecting Chuks to be our most threatening striker, which is what he is turning into. Keeping him fit will be crucial, if he can play 35-40 games this season, he'll get a decent number of goals

Certainly a much better second half performance than the first. I might have been tempted to take Purrington (or Pratley) off much earlier after Blackpool were reduced to ten men. Maatsen made a huge difference when he came on to make his league debut. For me, it was almost a bit of an ‘I was (virtually) there’ moment. What a player he is.
Also great performances by Innis and Famewo who make a monstrous CB combo.
Watson is clearly getting up to speed, and was much better today. Bogle showed that he can be a handful. Would be interested to see him play alongside Aneke, because they’re not as similar as I thought. They’d certainly be a real handful.
Doughty was terrorising their left back in the first half, and could have a great season with us, (where he belongs).
With Maddison and Gilbey fit I think top six is a distinct possibility.

Watching the highlights of our goal celebration ......... Chuks runs over to Doughty for high fives.
Chuks picks up Doughty - no way was Doughty going to risk picking up Chuks!

I don't often agree with you bro' but on this one I'm with you 100%. If the name has a "y" in it then it should be pronounced to rhyme with scythe. And Neil Mellor agrees with me 👍.

So ..... I was just watching the highlights and our disallowed goal.
If you freeze the action to the instant that Inniss heads the ball goalbound:

A player cannot be offside direct from a corner, in any case. The corner is taken and the keeper physically pushes Bogel away from him and turns his head in a different direction to watch Inniss make the header

While Bogle appears to be just behind the defender who is moving off the line, he's clearly not interfering with play at that moment the ball is played by Inniss.

That is the key phrase in the Offside Law, "the moment the ball is played".

Assuming he didn't actually touch the ball ......... after the ball is played, Bogle is free to make whatever movement. he wishes surely.
    The goal should have stood.

Didn't watch the match so had to rely on the reports from here plus Neil Mellor on Sky.

Good to grind out another 1-0 win but its not the way I like to see my team play. Once again we set up too defensively & can't believe we kept Watson & Pratley on together for all of the 1st half. Williams might as well look for another club as he wont be needed here much anymore. Also hoping that once Gilbey & Maddison are fit then we might at least have some attacking threat from midfield.

Still don't think we are good enough for top 6, especially if we can only score 4 goals in 6 games. Doncaster scored that amount tonight in 1 game.......against the league leaders no less !!!   But enough of the whingeing for now & hoping that once the players have had a few more weeks to settle in, bed down & find their feet then we might see a bit more positive play. I might even be tempted to spend £10 on Saturday to see what Chelsea's left back looks like.....

I've heard stories of a word containing a y that rhymes with Smith, but I think it's a myth.

A cracking three points on a Tuesday night in Blackpool. It’s a breezy old place and the North West hasn’t been a particularly happy hunting ground for us over the years.

A lively start to the game, especially with the sending off and Alfie Doughty’s early forays down the wing, but it fizzled out after a while, with too much square passing along the back and stodgy play in midfield. The tempo was far too slow against ten men, we lacked creativity and there was no real prospect of disrupting Blackpool’s shape. Purrington’s idiotic sending off changed the dynamic of the game but, ultimately, it may have done us a favour.

I thought in the first half that the game cried out for a ball carrier like Jonny Williams, especially after their sending off, but the introduction of Ian Maatsen proved critical in the second half, as his beautiful cross and Alfie’s header back laid on a deserved winner for Chuks Aneke. Prior to that, Ryan Inniss was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with a towering header, although watching the replay on Valley Pass, Bogle did look offside to me. As they used to say in the old days (and in a much, much simpler world), “If he wasn’t interfering with play, what the bloody hell was he doing there?” On the plus side, Inniss should be a real problem for the opposition at set plays.

Apart from Ben Purrington’s struggles against CJ Hamilton, we were solid at the back and untroubled throughout - illustrated by Blackpool’s failure to register a single shot on target. I thought they looked a poor side. Be that as it may, our new look defence was solid and I imagine that Maatsen will slot in on Saturday in place of the suspended Purrington. 4 clean sheets in 6 league games (and 3 on the bounce) is impressive and will build confidence, albeit that much sterner tests are coming our way.

Watson and Pratley are different types of players to some extent but we lack creativity when they play together in the same midfield. Shinnie looks a very useful player, with a bit of flair, and we’ll be better when we can integrate Maddison and Gilbey into the side.

Doughty had a good game and I thought that Bogle did ok for a player who’s played 30 minutes in 7 months. There is understandable ring rust but he could easily have had a goal or two tonight - timing, rhythm and confidence are so important, especially for strikers. Washington was a bit nebulous and I thought that both Smyth and Aneke made a difference in terms of energy, pace and overall impact when they came on. How that must have felt a luxury for Lee Bowyer, given the paucity of resources he’s had to live with in recent times.

Not a finely tuned machine by any means - how could anyone expect anything approaching that - but some promising signs from a team and a squad that will improve. We have some good players to come back and a depth in numbers that will be the envy of most clubs in this division.

My issue is that with Wigan + Blackpool those should be very easy wins and yet we're scraping past them.

Hopefully we just need time for our squad to gel but based on performances so far we're looking nowhere near promotion.
    Absolutely clueless.

This is the poster who was criticising Dan James’ selection at RB for England because he can’t get into the Man Utd defence, clueless seems accurate

Only seen sky highlights & just wondered about their sending off, did he trip bogle or pull him back ? Looked minimal if any contact to me but Blackpool didn't seem to complain so guess there was some contact ?

Due to work commitments I didn’t get to watch as much of the game as I’d have liked, but a couple of things that stood out to me:

    1) We never win away midweek ooop north so hard thought single goal victory or flowing 4-0 win - a win is a win and something to be very happy about.

    2) After the goal, Doughty jumped on Aneke and Aneke carried him under one arm like me carrying my 1 year old daughter. Aneke is an absolute beast.

Not perfect yet but so many promising signs to build on. This Albertan Addick is very satisfied with how things have gone since the squad has been fully assembled.
  • Tell you what, we’ve got a bloody good side here. So much great experience mixed with outstanding youth talent, I can’t name a better back four or midfield in the whole division.

We may not have a striker that scores 20 goals a season, but I can guarantee we won’t be conceding many.

We’ve got a great spine to build on
I hope you're right but let's not get too carried away just yet. If we'd drawn last night we'd probably be slaughtering Watson and some would be saying Bowyer is too negative.

We've beaten a Wigan side in disarray (and could've easily drawn) and a Blackpool side who are 2nd bottom and got beat 4-1 at home by Ipswich.

After Northampton we have games v Oxford, Pompey and Fleetwood so they will give us a better idea of how good we actually are.

But the early signs are definitely promising.
