  • Aneke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • How good does it feel to just be totally focussed on the football?

Just comments about formations, substitutions etc etc.

It’s just like the good old days on here - I love it!

Gunter-Inniss-Famewo-Maatsen is a better back four than Djiksteel-Bauer-Sarr-Purrington

We have limitations up the pitch but with a defensive unit like that we can grind out results.

No real expectations for this season but it’s just so so good to talk about football, football and football.
I'd wager there's not a better back four in the league!
Sunderland’s back 4 look very decent. Think we both look very similar this season and wouldn’t be shocked if we met at Wembley in May.
Good call on Sunderland back 4, hadn't realised they've only conceded once in 6 league games so far.
Yeah but don't forget 1 of those was against our attack.
  • this will bread confidence... Aneke needed that goal .... LB will be pushing him to shoot more and once the confidence starts to flow we may well have a striker on our hands.... there is a lot more depth now and competition for places...

My feeling is Maddison will be the lynch pin... once he is in and we've gelled properly and LB's plans are embedded... I think we are going to be a force in this league...

Bowyer reckons Blackpool will be a top 6 side this year? I thought they were awful. Never really threatened us and kept lumping long balls despite Inniss heading everything away.

It was striking how happy they were to play for a 0-0 as well. At home, to us. Are we that highly rated in this division?

  • Should have been ruled out for dangerous play ..... strange looking shape for a header but think he’s twisting his body to get some power on it

Defender is moving away from the flying boot .... ball is going past the keeper who I thought should have done better

great work by der der der der Chucks Aneke
  • I'll be picking who's shirt I buy this year a lot more carefully after last years (Taylor ... spit) ... a few more from Chuks and it could be number 10 I get

I have finally put my finger on who Bowyer reminds me of as a manager.

    Eddie Jones.

Protect the new back four, get used to each other.  Build confidence, not only between the defenders but confidence in them with the more expansive players.  So they know if they give the ball away its not an automatic goal against us.

Watson & Pratley have done a great job letting the back 4 settle.  Once it's properly bedded in the hand break will come off sooner rather than later.  2 1-0s with a scratch team is a good start, isn't it?
I hope so. The big positive in recent games for me has been seeing how defensively we look strong. Bowyer has promised we will get better and I expect that to happen. We did deserve to win last night, much more so than Saturday IMO.

It was a strange game in that we were gifted the advantage so early and then handed it back which was verging on criminal. The key to our season is getting Aneke on the pitch for as many minutes as possible. Up front is where we are a bit light and he is probably as good a forward, if not a better one, as anybody in the League.

They reminded me of us a bit. They did well with 10 men but it is different trying not to lose a game and trying to win one. Their threat was a bit limited and when we got on top of that it was a question of taking one of our chances of which I felt we could have made more.

As for the Purrington sending off, he couldn't cope with Hamilton's pace. He is a steady League One defender but after the first booking, this was an issue we could have addressed sooner. It isn't great taking off a player early, but it isn't just the team that goes down to 10 men who should react tactically to it and Bowyer could have said to Purrington that he wanted to go more offensive and remove the red card risk that I'm sure Purrington would have been fine with.

And as for the disallowed goal, it was clearly given because the officials decided Bogle touched it. That being the case, can anybody be certain that was wrong. Yes, they got to the decision in a bit of a convoluted way, but I'm not sure we were done an injustice. If I was Bowyer, I'd be a bit cross with Bogle for touching it or trying to as it was clearly going in.

Maatsen changed the game, so sharp, quality passing, had CJ in his pocket. Should have started.

    Chucks again was brilliant.
    Innis is an absolute monster.

Much better the last 30 mins.
Having a left back that can use the ball makes an enormous difference- in a team full of right footed midfielders, they get so
much of the ball.  I’ve been hugely critical of Purrington in the past and I will continue to be so - he should be third choice at best; personally I still preferred Oshilaja there too
  • Bowyer's full post-game interview is available on Valley Pass and for those who purchased the Blackpool game .

  • Didn't watch the match so had to rely on the reports from here plus Neil Mellor on Sky.

So everything else I have to say is hearsay, assumptions and completely pointless.

  • Quite surprised and pleased with those stats. Considering how late we were in rebuilding the squad compared to others, and how many of the new players are starting already, I think we should be optimistic.
Obviously midfield aint great yet but I think it will only improve.
  • Chucks has the crowd baying now and is ready to unleash hell on the next opponent - fully expect him and  Smyth to become our first choice up top - centre half’s both very dominant, maetsen looks great - hopefully we can introduce some more ability into the midfield soon -Watson looked a lot better and has s bit of class but  pratley is a good spoiler but nothing more - is like to know what Willian’s has to do to get in that midfield coz he’s miles ahead of jfc or pratley in ability

So ..... I was just watching the highlights and our disallowed goal.
If you freeze the action to the instant that Inniss heads the ball goalbound:

A player cannot be offside direct from a corner, in any case. The corner is taken and the keeper physically pushes Bogel away from him and turns his head in a different direction to watch Inniss make the header

While Bogle appears to be just behind the defender who is moving off the line, he's clearly not interfering with play at that moment the ball is played by Inniss.

That is the key phrase in the Offside Law, "the moment the ball is played".

Assuming he didn't actually touch the ball ......... after the ball is played, Bogle is free to make whatever movement. he wishes surely.
    The goal should have stood.

if he’s in an offside position when Inniss heads it and he goes towards the ball and is as close as he is then he’ll be deemed offside
hardly anyone (as in the person The ball is going to or near ) is interfering with play the moment the ball is played they are deemed active once it’s near them and they go for it
  • Another 3 points on the board and another clean sheet we can't ask for more then that at this stage with a new group of players!

Inniss said after the Wigan game they're taking each game as it comes & learning about each other every day. The next two games are definitely winnable. In Bowyer we trust!
  • Lost to 2 of the top 6 and beaten 14th placed Crewe and since the start of the rebuild drawn with 5th place Sunderland and beaten 2 of the current bottom 4
Early days but there’s something there and we will be in the play off mix (we have used up all our play off luck so will lose in them as the footballing gods even things up and don’t forget we have a 78 year winning streak against the scum to come to even stuff up )

Maatsen is on another level and defence looks great,  my only worry is the Beastinniss’ his passing scares me as much as his defending scares attackers .

Tougher tests to come will show where we’re at ...15 games in and I’ll as good as be able to confirm our position so you won’t have to worry so much .

When I’m confident about us it’s worth ten times what the rose tinted see .

seriously Blackpool could be laid at 11/10 last night I got a couple of pals on it .

top half for the season is a gimme so anything better than 1/3 should be banked , buying money .

    2%   Automatic promotion
    63%  Play offs
    35%  7th-12th
    0%   13th-20th
    0%       Relegation

Great 3 points, but when a team have 59% of the possession and 14 shots it begs the question ?

Why were only two headers on target and how when we have 59% of the play did Washington see so little of the ball ?
He put in a shift and I saw him running a lot but he appeared on the periphery all evening.

The positives are Connor Washington has 29 goals in 88 apps in League 1 (1 in 3) so he should be fine as the team get to know each other.

Bogle has pace, but his understanding of the off side laws were alarming !
Has potential at this level to contribute.

Marcus Maddison when he's fit should do better than Watson with the 2 efforts that were Baileyesque. I thought Watson played well other than his shooting and his penchant for a yellow card.

Hopefully Lee Bowyer gets back to be the manager who plays on the front foot and doesn't revert to the timidity of the first half when we made it so easy for the 10 men of Blackpool(until Purrington's two cards)

A deserved win on 2nd half, and when was the last time a team didn't create one clear chance against us ?

Two back to back 1-0 wins is a great platform to work on and with MM and Gilbey fit soon to increase the midfield options, our field of dreams is taking shape.
  • Is it pronounced Smy the....or Smyth (Smith)?
Well, I can't think of another word in the English language with a y that gets pronounced like the i in Smith, but still everyone will do so anyway.

It should be Smyth pronounced like sky, sly, sty, scythe, shy but it's probably the player who says it's pronounced otherwise.

Some people can't even spell their own name correctly.
I don't often agree with you bro' but on this one I'm with you 100%. If the name has a "y" in it then it should be pronounced to rhyme with scythe. And Neil Mellor agrees with me 👍.
I've heard stories of a word containing a y that rhymes with Smith, but I think it's a myth.
    Brilliant @lordromford
Brilliant really? It sounds like a bit of a pyrrhic victory to me.

For those on the match thread who said Purrington needed to bring him down because he was going to get a shot away.

Wasnt it the first booking that Purrington needed to bring him down else he was free on goal?

Which is why I didn't comment on the match itself but my thoughts going forwards.

I really don't know why you keep trying to dig me out. Verging on being stalkerish.
  • I cannot believe how negative you've been about virtually everything happening at the Club recently.

You've read some views and opinions on here plus some TV pundit who just watches a game without being aware of all the background nuances - and off you go again, slagging all and sundry off.
  • Just a few observations:

    - The back 4 (including Amos and not Purrington) were solid and seem intent to perform the dirty aspects of their role. Individually, each player has his own motivation and I could see that in the defending.

    - Watson had a good game and on this showing, should probably be first choice as he can move the ball quicker which transitions play that tad bit quicker than Pratley. Pratley for specific games at CM or fill in CB for me, as Bows would say for "when we get our injuries".

    - Shinnie played well for me. We've needed somebody to be confident with their close control in tight spaces and also provide some whipped free kicks. A player who offers this is as valuable as Doughty's charges up field are as one lets the ball do the talking, the other, his legs.

-Front two didn't work. Washington was anonymous for 55 mins. Bogle showed good close control, and his hold up play is certainly an improvement from Bonne's. His finishing resembled Bonne's on a off day, but he would have sneaked one in, yet offered no/awful build up play. That old conundrum.

    - I wonder if Bows regrets not changing things after the first minute. Most fans on the stream could see Purrington was a walking wicket after being skinned and yellow carded early on. It was just obvious that he can't play on the front foot and still ably defend. Going to a back 3 or simply bringing a player on who is better on the ball, than somebody on the pitch would have offered more.

  • Looking better with a game in hand.
Sunderland and Doncaster do, too, and Doncaster just gave Notlob a real spanking.  I think we can be there or thereabouts at the end of the season but there could be another eight or nine teams in the mix.
