Main thing for me will be whether Aneke and Smyth can score goals between them. There is plenty of class in midfield and the back 4, consistent goal scoring is the key.

Is it pronounced Smy the....or Smyth (Smith)?
Well, I can't think of another word in the English language with a y that gets pronounced like the i in Smith, but still everyone will do so anyway.

It should be Smyth pronounced like sky, sly, sty, scythe, shy but it's probably the player who says it's pronounced otherwise.

Some people can't even spell their own name correctly.
    Rhythm? Hypocrisy?

That said I used to know someone whose surname was Smyth and she was Irish and pronounced it Smythe
    Haaaa.

You proved me wrong. I hold my hands up.

Rhythm does it. English pronunciation is so messed up.

    I owe you a shrubbery.

    Myth too. Ooooooops

Crystal is another. Just goes to show why I don't agree with this pronunciation of i

Before anyone adds anymore to disprove my claim, there are actually over 30 words that fall into this category.  I should have looked it up before - I have performed like Purrington tonight.

We're definitely going to have to keep a lot of clean sheets to win matches but the midfield and particularly defence look capable of that. When we get Maddison in the team we will look a lot more threatening going forward.

2 1nil victories is the stuff of champions! Especially with a new team.

Obviously lots to improve on but as we've seen in the past, the quality of this league isn't great. Could do with a Yann like free transfer to set us apart from the rest up front

Good win and we looked comfortable without actually doing much. Bogle was lively and Chuks looks a real threat and overall play is so much better.

Special mention to big Ryan, another colossus performance and so unlucky not to open his account, if only Bogle leaves the ball....typical striker move!

Would have been frustrating if we had just come away with a point as Blackpool looked poor.

Well that was eventful. Two sendings off, a disallowed goal and a good winner from Chuks that had 4 players involved in the build up which was started off by Chuks himself.
Lots of positives - Maatsen looks very good, Watson much improved, players starting to gel.
Watching on VP is annoying on the level of not getting replays, so I've no idea if the goal was offside.

Some being too harsh on here for my liking.
This team/squad has 14 new bodies FFS.
    It's going to take time.
What I will say is, the defence, so often the bone of contention looks as solid as I've seen it for years. I know it's early days but:
Gunter experienced and measured. Famewo solid and faultless.
Maatsen looks class with so much quality on the ball and can also defend
And Inniss. Well. What can I say. How he's gone under the radar for so long is anyone's guess?
Absolute man mountain of a man that will drag this side kicking and screaming through many a game.

A superb base to build a side that can propel up the league.
I've not even seen him play yet but from all I read about him I think he could well be in line to become a cult hero & captain.

He was outstanding tonight. Wins everything, nearly killed someone with a cracking tackle too.

The goals will come, signs are there, our new defence is awesome so far. Happy with another 1-0, I don’t care how they come as long as we get three points.
And 2 Goals as you cannot rely on 1-0 leads against better teams, but as you say the signs are without question and the new defence is superb 👍👍

Bowyer really getting it right at the moment. Has a whole squad of new players and knows that you have to earn the right to win.

The free flowing football will come, but he’s dealing with players who’ve arrived late and have had little pre seasons. Two 1-0 victories is excellent, and exactly what is needed. Tonight was better than Saturday and I hope to see another improvement on Saturday.

Great winning feeling and well done Lee Bowyer.

p.s. Inniss and Famewo are a sublime pairing for league 1!
  • Well hopefully that’s the left back position taken for the rest of the season, barring a recall.

Watson has been a massive disappointment for me. Not been impressed at all, started well tonight then dreadful, second touch is a tackle. Prefer Pratley and JFC.

i thought it was made for Williams to run at them when they were down to 10, he may have gotten the chance if Purrington hadn’t gotten himself sent off.

Great build up and finish for the goal.

Three points but far from impressive.

special mention for Inniss, proper centre half and very unlucky to have what looked a perfectly good goal chalked off by the linesman. Suspect if he had gone over to consult with The lino He would have Kept his flag down.

So many positives. Maatsen looks like the kid you had at school that was miles better than everyone else and was almost taking the piss.

We are gonna keep lots of clean sheets this year with the likes of Amos, Gunter, Inniss, Famewo, Pearce etc to choose from. Drop one of Watson / Pratley (on rotation as they pick up suspensions) in front of them...Proper solid old school defenders.

Maddison and Gilbey to come in too..... midfield is strong.

I will say this - if we had a BWP or Taylor in this team I’d say it would be a foregone conclusion for automatic promotion.
    What about a Bonne? :naughty:

    (sorry, shouldn't have said that!)

Our lack of creativity in the first half was very worrying.

We were much better with Maatsen on.  He should make the left back slot, or central midfield where he cropped up occasionally, his own.

We should also be better going forward with Maddison or Gilbey in place of one of Watson or Pratley.

Bowyer's comment about Blackpool being a good team, and few teams winning there is slightly questionable, considering they're second bottom with just 4 points, having already lost to Lincoln and Ipswich!

I think he's flattered them a little bit, on tonights showinf they're more likely to be looking down the table than up. If we're asking where the goals are coming from in our team then who knows what they're saying!

Word for Gunter as well. Looks assured and is proving me wrong with regards to the Matthews vs Gunter debate

Whilst defensively we looked sound today and the forwards worked hard. The midfield, Bowyer's specialism looked meh at far too many times today.

Watson - looked better than he has done, but continues to pick up stupid bookings.

Doughty - did well. But his end product is often still frustrating. If he could cross accurately a little more often or control that ball a bit better... He'd be at Celtic ,😉

    Shinnie - Steady Eddie.

Pratley - Steady but never really got into the game.

I don't think we can get away with Watson, Pratley and Shinnie in the same side. It's too passive and opens us up to pacey players.

So much better after the subs. Chuks and Smyth has to be the way forward. If we play Bogle and Washington we'll never score.
Also better to have only one of Watson/Pratley on the pitch.
Bogle and Aneke for me, but Bowyer won't do that.

Lincoln and Ipswich are two of the better teams in League 1 imho
  • Laying the foundation on the season, pleased with the points and hopefully performances will follow, very early days.

The problem is that neither of them can play much more than a half each so it makes sense to replace one with t'other.

Maybe if they can improve their fitness...
  • Great result...this team once gelled, more fitter & with some quality players to come back from injury, what’s not too like...yeah we will lose a few & draw a few...but I’ve gotta good feeling that we will have more in the win column come end of Thomas’s 1st season...

Trying not to get too carried away but if there is a better centre half pairing in this pub league than Inniss and Famewo then I would be surprised. With Gunter and the little Dutch wizard Maatsen we may well have the best back line as well. If they all stay fit for most of the season we will cruise this league. Inniss is a monster.

What's the lowest number of goals conceded in a full 46 game season for the Champions?
Watson much, much better tonight - once fully fit he will be a mainstay in defensive midfield (apart from his regular inevitable suspensions of course). No issues with midfield in general and with Gilbey, Maddison and Williams to come even better. I still think Smyth is going to be a big player this year.
Great for Chuks to score and hopefully that will be a turning point - he looked noticeably fitter when he came on that when he started on Saturday and every minute on the pitch will help in that. Bogle also showed more promise and perhaps needs a goal to get his confidence back. Assuming we don't get plagued with injuries then January must focus on getting another striker.
