Is 433. Mount and Sancho in, Saka (injured) and Walker (formation change) out.
If that is the team then no complaints from me, but very surprised he isn't resting Rice given he was cramping up in the Germany game and is also on a yellow.
I assumed he would stick with the same formation as the previous 4 games. It's boring but works so thought he will go with the same against who ever we come up against.
The leaked teams have been correct every time though so interesting if it is a 433.
Ukraine means borderland. The use of the article (the) relates to the time before independence in 1991, when Ukraine was a republic of the Soviet Union known as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Since then, it should be merely Ukraine.

He switched formations for the Germany game to 3 at the back with wingbacks... hadn't played that in the tournament before.

Didn't we play 433 in the firsrt 3 games?
This is back to that with Sancho replacing Foden. I think the fact England can play a 3 or a 4 effectively and seem to have no issue switching between the 2 is brilliant. Obviously something they have worked on for a while.
If, and obviously it's a big if, we play Italy we would probably go back to a 3 to negate their wing backs, as we did brilliantly against the Germans.
Good to see Sancho get given a go. We are in a very fortunate position with our attacking players that we can rotate and still keep a very high quality. He should be chomping at the bit to show what he can do.

We should have enough and Southgate has been very solid so far in his tactics but his ignorance of Sancho for 4 games and now his refusal to start Grealish confuses me.
Pundits, players and the public feel he's done enough.
But we should still turn them over! However if Rice and Philips both get booked we'll be starting a very rusty, very inexperienced (in terms of playing together) midfield pairing of Bellingham and Henderson in the semi final.....
He must be seen better as an impact sub. Having said that we have enough players that can be seen as an impact sub so still dont see why he cant start.

I think that's it. Like it or not he brings the kind of impact that lifts a whole team off the floor when he comes on. There's not a coach in this tournament that wouldn't want to have that option on the bench when you are up against it.
As an aside, at the top of their game I don't think there is a better front 3 pace attack than Sancho,Sterling and Kane. Let's hope they crack on if they are picked together.
He is going to play Sterling and Kane come what May. Who ever is England manager probably will, all the way through to the USA World Cup.
That realistically leaves 2 spots for Saka, Sancho, Mount, Foden and Grealish. All have played and will play again. Which ever 3 he leaves out people will moan that at least one of them should play. There is a very good argument that any 2 of those 5 should play.
Grealish has proved he can come on and influence a game, something that isn't as easy as people think. It's a 13-15 man game now if you can have 12 world class performers why not use them?
You know what, after 4 games of "why is he playing Trippier at left back", "Do we really need Rice and Phillips on top of 3 centre backs" etc, I'm just think he picks who he picks, hopefully he's right, come on England!
Great opening line from Southgate - Straight away ensures there is no possibility of Ukraine using a quote for motivation like the Brazilians did in 2002, then again that was the press rather than anyone from England on that occasion.

The Rice and Phillips point is what I meant to say previously about not changing it at this point as its worked in the previous 4 games.
Some see it as boring playing them 2 in front of the back 4 or 5. Playing 7 defensive players with only kane, sterling and saka up top. It isnt exciting but it is working. We still havent conceded and if it wins us the tournament playing that way then nobody will care.
Lots of confidence on this thread and throughout the country. From what i have seen of Ukraine they are quick on the attack. a hell of alot quicker than us.
Think this will be harder than what some people imagine but i have trust in Pickford and our defensive line to keep it tight. The other thing in our favour is that late in the game the Ukrainians will tire which is where i think we might be able to pounce with the likes of Grealish coming on from the bench.
I think the toughest thing tonight will be keeping the players in the right frame of mind. Germany at Wembley, in front of the biggest crowd they've played in front of for 18 months, Now away to Rome, against Ukraine, with very few fans. That's got to have some effect.

Strongly suspect if we're ahead at HT, he might bring Henderson on for Rice for those reasons.

Putin still see Ukraine as "the Ukraine"

If Walker is "rested" then either the experienced Trippier will play Right back or the very competent James in a 4 at the back.
Tough night sleep with baby brain 🤣

hard fault 2-1 victory in extra time.
