We look like we have a plan and a clear playing philosophy which will allow us to play as a proper unit, more than the sum of our parts.

With that said, we still do need half a dozen arrivals before the end of the window to fill a bench.
This has been missing for years!! I haven’t been able to say what our “style” has been although “headless” has often sprung to mind.
Tbf Karl Robinson had a philosophy by playing 4-2-3-1 every game.
  • 1-2
    Ffs !!

    The score is 2-1

Home side score goes first.  Jeez.
What a pathetic thing to get wound up by :D
Not at all.  It's annoying when you think we've taken the lead only to then find we're losing.

I see a "different" Palace fan has done the "4 take aways" for Palace, in the SLP, tonight, I hope they can find a Charlton fan to do ours, although Louis's could stand in and give his view
    Ours is here:

Thanks even if it was a very deadpan response to my brilliant joke ha ha

I assume Watson is "alright" now it's in the public demain?

He's very much on the business exemption list
I looked it up on the government website and being a company owner isn't on the list. If I'm missing something then fair enough but I'd like to know what it is.

He qualifies as a 'business director bringing significant number of jobs and investment to the uk'
    It is.

    Here you go.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-travellers-exempt-from-uk-border-rules/coronavirus-covid-19-travellers-exempt-from-uk-border-rules#business-directors-bringing-significant-numbers-of-jobs-and-investment-to-the-uk

    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/red-amber-and-green-list-rules-for-entering-england#amber-list

You must quarantine in the place you are staying for 10 days. You can leave your accommodation when conducting the specific exempt activity/activities or travelling directly to and from your accommodation and a location for the purposes of this activity. You must quarantine at all other times during your stay.

You need to take a COVID-19 test on day 2 and day 8 after arrival in the UK, if you are still in the country.

Fully UK vaccinated – amber list – if you are fully vaccinated under the UK vaccination programme you do not need to quarantine or take a COVID-19 test on day 8.

So if Thomas is not vaccinated, he must quarantine for 10 days (allowed out for activies related to his business) but must take a COVID test on day 2 and day 8.

If he is vaccinated, he doesn't have to quarantine or take the day 8 test but he must take a test on day 2 of his stay.

    Every time.

    I am with Golfie here.
  • A brief word for the keeper who has made a couple of outstanding saves now through pre season. I’m very impressed. Dare I say a clear upgrade on Amos?
  • PS I do enjoy a Desmond against Crystal Palace
  • A brief word for the keeper who has made a couple of outstanding saves now through pre season. I’m very impressed. Dare I say a clear upgrade on Amos?
Some of his saves at Reading and again last night were fantastic. But he was at fault for both goals and appears to be prone to the odd clanger. Hoping he's got that out of his system now.
  • Didn’t really see what Madger Gomes brought to the party. I’d much rather us use a good Premier League loan or utilise a youngster.
I thought he bought a lot of energy and was tidy. If you are looking for a squad player, I doubt you will find much better with budget constraints.
  • With that performance and result last night the pre-season objective of getting players match fit and working as a team is starting to quietly look like a swan, on the surface smoothly gliding along but you know beneath the surface there must be a lot of hard work going on to achieve it.
  • Ronnie is back and “running around a bit”

     :)
Have you quoted from his match appearances to date?
  • Any links to the highlights? Have only seen our goals.

I agree he was at fault. I understand we're in a honeymoon period with a new signing but his kicking is clearly a big issue, and was something the Cowleys alluded to.

Agreed. I wouldn't go as far as saying he's a "clear upgrade" but nor do I think he's a step backwards either. Hopefully game time and a settled defence will cut out the errors.

Having Pearce in defence doesn't help. It was a terrible back pass.

    So so many positives.

Matthews and Gunter both looked so much sharper than they did early last season.

The starting midfield 3 looked well balanced and a good combination.  Supported the high press well.  Dobson looks a player, a poor man's Kalvin Phillips.

DJ looked good, I would say he has a much higher ceiling than Doughty.

Stockley and Washington did what Stockley and Washington do.  Washington isn't a winger, but didnt play as one.

That's the best I have ever seen Barker play, against the best team I have seen Barker play against.

Deji is going to be a super star, if he keeps his head down but not yet.

Gomes is worth a year, even if it just allows Vennings a year on loan, he looks like he needs more mens football.

Gandor and Claydon look like they could be options from the bench this season.

Dempsey isn't the same player I have seen before!

Davison is good enough as striker 3 or 4.

The negatives are all so painfully obvious.

We need a left back and a center half yesterday.

We probably need a "better" midfielder but I am not sure of what type because I still have no idea what he is. Is Albie a 10, an 8, a 6?

We need another winger and striker.  Again, like Morgan, Davison needs to work out what type of striker he is.  He, again, is neither one type or another.

Loads of positives.  If you factor in that Inniss, Gilbey and Purrington would probably be in our first 11 we just need that little bit of quality and a little bit more depth.
Agree with all the above except I hope Albie isn't a 6! That's a CB!
Using 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 as examples:

    1
    2 5 6 3
     4 8
    7 10 11
    9

    Or

    1
    2 5 6 3
    10 4 8
    7 9 11

Though looking at squad numbers used so far Matthews is definitely a 16, Inniss appears to want 26 and Wash 14.
  • I'd like to see Oguntayo given a few more minutes as well. I thought he looked decent in the games against Welling/Dartford (can't remember which it was!)
  • Was at the game last night and wasn't as bad as I thought, definitely a few charlton fans in the boxes going by the cheers on the equaliser.

We played high press intensity football yesterday and it worked. Everyone looked Fitter, shaper and faster than last year and everyone played with confidence.

We tried to play football and at times we were guilty off over playing it but that's what these pre season games are for. Working and trying things out.

Overall I'm happy with the direction the squad is going in, maybe some more depth in the form of loans perhaps but otherwise we have a very decent core of players and the youngsters involved are progressing nicely.
Playing with confidence - the benefit of having a manager with a positive outlook
  • Based on less than nothing

    7%    Automatics
    65%  play offs
    27.75%  7th-12th
    0.25%  bottom half

You need to move into the 21st century mate :p

    6
    6 1/2
    8
    10

Are all what used to be central midfielders.  Not sure why it's 6 not 4 though.   Probably to bring us in line with the rest of Europe.
  • Didn’t really see what Madger Gomes brought to the party. I’d much rather us use a good Premier League loan or utilise a youngster.

That’s what a saw, like a bee in a bottle. He was very energetic but didn’t really do much, as well as losing the ball in dangerous areas quite a bit.

I think we’re at the stage where we don’t need cheap squad players, particularly in midfield, we need better than what we’ve already got.
  • Again a very good performance all round(goals excepted),we are now playing at a much faster  pace than last season.Morgan and Washington seem a yard quicker, midfield moving ball forward much quicker.Davison grows in confidence, thats 2 very good goals he has scored now,and he looks a much faster player. All coming together nicely, sure there will be additions but squad to me looks to be taking shape nicely.
