Evans beats Tiafoe - through to Semis. First decent bit of form for a long time.
Now into the final - beats Dimitrov in straight sets in the final.
Will face world no. 37 Griekspoor in the final on Sunday evening. Griekspoor beat Taylor Fritz in the other semi final. Evans would rise to a career high ranking of 21 if he wins.
(If Griekspoor wins he’ll jump above Evans all the way to 21 himself - Evans would have to settle for 23)
Am glad I've rad this thread as hadn't appreciated how far up the rankings Evans has risen. Catching up Norrie.
What's the latest with Jack Draper who looked like he might be a good prospect? Assume he was injured for Wimbledon. Things looking up for GB tennis; even more so for the men with Searle as well now
This peformance has come in the nick of time for Evans because next week he has 360 points to defend from last year’s run to the Canadian Open semi final.
So even if he does win later to jump to 21, it’s very likely he’ll fall back down the rankings to the mid 20s unless he’s able to reach the semi final in Toronto again.
Worst case scenario is if he loses today, and fails to defend those points next week, he’ll likely fall out of the world’s top 30.

As expected, Evans immediately drops to 27 in the live rankings. He will climb back up dependent on how many of the 360 points from last year's Canadian Open he can retain.
Up to 21 in the latest men’s rankings - a new career high.
He's had a few highs in his life
Did well to come back after his drugs ban - showed a lot of character. A real battler.
He put his hand up and owned his drug use rather than hiding behind the must have been spiked defence that almost every other athlete uses. I respect him for that
Katie Boulter performed well in a first round victory against local opposition in Montreal, after getting through 2 rounds of qualifying Her reward is a tie with world number 7, Coco Gauff in the next round. Their only previous meeting was 2 and a bit years ago in Melbourne which KB won in 3

Murray withdrew from the match with an abdominal strain. He said it feels very similar to the injury which forced him to miss Queens last year.
I suspect that means we might not see Murray in action now until the US Open at the end of the month. Very disappointing with the Cincinnati Masters scheduled next week being another opportunity to pick up ranking points that he won’t be afforded.
Currently #36 in the live ATP ranking, he’s going just miss the cut for grabbing a seed without a handful of withdrawals.
Lucky loser Alexei Popyrin (who took Murray’s spot in the draw) is into the last 16. He defeated another lucky loser in round 1, his opponent withdrew from round 2 and he plays the unseeded Finnish player Ruusuvuori for a quarter-final spot.
Britain's Andy Murray will play France's Corentin Moutet in the US Open first round as he starts his latest bid to go deep at a Grand Slam. Murray, 36, has not reached the last 16 of a major since 2017.
The former world number one has been drawn in the same quarter as fellow Britons Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans, who play Alexander Shevchenko and Daniel Elahi Galan respectively.
Katie Boulter faces Diane Parry, while Jodie Burrage plays Anna Blinkova.
Jack Draper, who retired from his second-round match at the Winston-Salem Open two days ago, has been drawn against Moldova's Radu Albot.

If the draws play out to seeding…
Evans: Galan(R1) -> van de Zandschlup(R2) -> Alcaraz(R3)
Just watched the post match interview with him. He's brought his wife and four children with him who are seven, five, three and two. The way he was talking it sounded like playing a Grand Slam game of tennis was easier than handling all the kids at once.
Andy Murray beats Corentin Moutet in straight sets.
I watched the last set and all sorts of strange things including underarm serves, an injury that seemed was so bad that Moutet wouldn't even let the physio touch his wrist then got up and carried on fine. Lots of winding up re time violation. Was quite odd, to me anyway
It’s a good day for the British men so far, with Murray, Norrie and Draper all advancing to round 2. Meanwhile Dan Evans is 2-0 up in sets against Galan.

- Draper #122
- Broady #123

It’s those kind of victories which will help Murray get back into the conversation for potential seeding.
Norrie also lost in the first round. There was a potential Norrie v Evans second round match brewing but unfortunately neither stepped up.

Any chance of a bit of luck going Andy’s way?
