  • I hate to be one of the moaners I really do.  But a loan signing, unless there’s a guarantee we get first option on him next season, seems fairly pointless to me when we’re destined for mid table.  I’d rather give one of our own a pop.
    Who though?
I don’t know to be fair, but you see where I’m coming from no?  I guess we’ve loaned a few out already.

Interesting phrasing by RC there. "Not expecting to happen" instead of expressly "no interest at all."

Possibly reading too deep but sounds like we enquired but aren't the favourites.

I thought that Kirk going was not dependent in a signing coming in but it now seems so.
Meanwhile a bloke deemed useless here is seen as good enough  for the Championship.  Strange , or not ?
Or one out and one in at the same time is just coincidence?
    Or good news management.

But more likely just a coincidence.
The article highlights we can still use John in the Pizza cup, so I imagine this was already done before and we’ve held it back.
If we find out he can take a penalty people are going to lose their minds

Generally, I do. If we signed a young CB on loan, I'd understand it, should we not be giving Deji a few games. Same in CM with someone like Henry. Maybe even at LWB, could we not try Oguntayo above Castillo (appreciate he's been injured). But not in this position, I see no contender at all in the youth teams and trying one would be purely for the sake of it. It's been blatantly obvious we need an AM so to be honest we're moaning purely because we're giving game time to another loan player.

I take your point about first option though. It will be frustrating if he does well and we can't get him again in the summer.

  • One thing I will say is that I'm surprised we've gone in for both Browne and John. Alongside Lee, I can't imagine we'll start with more than one of them so not sure we need all three.
  • 3 signings in the January window already & still 4 days to go.

    This doesn't feel very Charlton!!

The underwhelming feeling is just the same.
We're a mid table league 1 club so expectations should be managed accordingly.

My point stands. I'm pleased to see our business done relatively early, signing players we actually want rather than scratching around for whatever's available on deadline day
In Jan 2011 prior to the big summer rebuild we signed Bradley Wright-Philips who was knocking them in at Plymouth. I'm sorry but two 18 years olds and possibly a player just returning from a very bad injury, still strikes me as scratching around.
  • Finding it really hard to get excited about any of our signings ATM. We will be looking to rebuild again in the summer with more loans and players with histories of long term injuries. On top of that (apart from staying up) our season is over.

I’m assuming the Browne deal has fallen through and that’s why we’ve pushed through for Nile John.

Two are on loan, Browne is (hopefully) permanent. We can see how they fit in and which (if any) are worth hanging onto/getting back again next season NOW and planning accordingly.

If John's still young, Brown's recuperating and Lee burnt out we have actual rotation not just on the pitch but on the bench as well.

Seems a good thing to me.

That goes against what Cawley has said but of course is possible.

We have limited options off of the bench. Signing boy would give us more options

Different times. If that happened in 2022 Plymouth would be demanding £1m+ for a goal scoring striker.

We built that whole squad for around £1m.

Cawley posted straight after the loan confirmation, saying that we're still working on signing Browne.
It’s gone from he’s agreed a move and is having a medical on Tuesday to “Charlton are still working on it”.

I’m probably being ultra pessimistic but that doesn’t sound like a deal is moving forward, or anywhere near complete.

The line about the Pizza cup also suggests we’ve held back the John signing for whatever reason. John could have been a contingency in case we didn’t land other targets.

Sorry but dont remember Cawley confirming that Browne was having a medical with us?

That’s from Footy Insider, who broke the story before Cawley. (IIRC)

Footy Insider probably put 2+2 to get 5 then. They got an (accurate) rumour of interest but for whatever reason decided to frame it as imminent whereas Cawley (who works more closely with the club) reported it much more accurately that we are trying to get the move done but it's further away than that.

Yes, different times - especially for Plymouth at that time.
They were in grave danger of folding and were desperate for cash, any cash, just to keep going.

Always bargains to be had when financially desperate clubs hold a fire sale to survive.

Who is the second 18 year old? John and?

we've also signed a proven league 1 goal scorers and a loan from Chelsea who fits in with the formation the manager likes to play. When did we last have a better Jan window?

Proof that we expect him back here next season

I saw the picture of Nile John earlier and now this one - he has really aged in the hour he has been at the club.

Gallagher going to palace has ruined all loan signings for me forever.
