And there again is my point that our test batsmen are more interested in getting bat on ball. That ball wasn’t anywhere near threatening the stumps. In a way I feel bad for Root as he isn’t helped by being the captain of the most brainless batting unit we’ve had, even if in the field his captaincy is poor.
Genuinely can’t see where a wicket is coming from. Our bowling attack has to be up there with the worst over the last 20 years.
Agree, though it was a good toss to win and a bad toss to lose if you are going to give your wicket up which a few of our top order definitely did.
Sometimes batsman need to be selfish and I don't mean the Boycott type of selfish. I mean for the good of the team. Yesterday Crawley was doing really well in conditions which were not easy. It was totally foreign to him to be on 7 off 35 balls but that is exactly what the situation demanded until conditions became easier which they, undoubtedly, did over the course of the day. In throwing his hands at a ball that wasn't a half volley he opened the floodgates for what was to follow. I'm certainly not blaming him for some of the other dismissals but it did mean Root coming in relatively early.
Less really is more on occasions.
Two things were different in this innings
Crawley hit two drives on the up and in air before getting caught doing the same thing - one at the bowler and another through the covers. And Root decided to do the same.
Root averages over 50 batting at number 4. That's exactly where we should leave him. It's not his fault our top three are absolute shite and he is forced to play at three
Our batsmen either do not have the right technique to play Test cricket or, if they do, they just do not have the ability to bat "time". It really is as simple as that.

Trouble is, more often than not, the 2nd wicket falls when the ball is still new. Today's shot couldn't be blamed on coming in at 3. It was just an awful shot.
It is but they will persist because it's in his head rather than a fundamental flaw. The cupboard really is bare so far as alternatives are concerned. In fact, Lees, whilst he has occupied the crease at times, I have more question marks about his technique than that of Crawley - he has a top score of 31 from his previous 5 innings.

England seem to produce players who are really talented but keep throwing it away, e.g. Zak or Vince, or players with the right mentality, but technical issues, e.g. Lees, Burns,Sibley, Hameed

You can add Stokes to Crawley and Vince albeit that he has demonstrated the right temperament at times in his career. And Lees should have been caught the ball before.

I ll have a polite cyber bet with you that Lees will end up with a better test average than Crawley as an opener..unfortunately I don't see anything that the latter has learned from being out of the side ..you cant claim to be an international standard opening batsman and get out to those types of shots

We might get lucky & get past their score & make them bat again. But it will be short lived & over by tomorrow sometime - probably lunchtime.
2-13 and 3-5
Bloody grandkids using it again
