  • Now for the soothing balm of watching the women flatten Bangladesh
  • Trescothick saying let’s not judge the team on one day because they’ve done a lot of good in the first two tests. I love the man but the first two tests were not result pitches. This one is and they’ve failed.
You can bet your bottom dollar that privately he won't be quite so supportive.
As I said at the time, it was too early to say the England reset had started, and that this new top 6 was the answer after 2 tests playing against an average attack on a featherbed of a pitch.

More testing conditions plus more mentally testing conditions, and they crumbled again. Against far weaker bowling than the top 6 in Australia faced
  • At least England will survive an hour longer tomorrow, due to the clocks going forward

This is going very much not to plan either
  • We've been destroyed by Bolland in Australia, and Mayers in Greneda. Surely the type of seam and swing bowler we ought to be really familiar with?

No, because they don’t play county cricket
  • As much as i feel for the family and friends of Shane Warne This 'sheepy' wont be going to the Melbourne MCG, 'send off' for this cricket legend and larrikin, in their thousands Nor will i be watching it on TV-- I just thought that had he been a soccer player, like the legendary late Socceroo Johnny Warren, it was a 10 minute news segment, and see yer later.

Today I picked up 4 tickets for NZ at Lord's, day 2 Fri 3rd June.
3 tickets for SA at Lord's, day 3 Fri 19th August.
4 tickets for SA at The Oval, day 2 Fri 9th September.
Just looking at Lord's, I can't believe how expensive the NZ tickets are

Yes it's Lord's, NZ are a good side, and it's the longer holiday for the Queen's 60th, but the prices are still extortionate for a JUNE Test match
They need to pay for the new stands, plus they know they will sell out.
They won't keep selling out if England keep getting hammered
You'd hope not but they probably will because too many people aren't really there for the cricket.
You hit the nail on the head there buddy You'll never beat Australia at cricket, Kids here ,are literally BRAINWASHED with it  And 'factcheck' even proved that C .A. fix the participation figures, for this mind numbing sport .Such is their ego
Dad took me to the Oval to watch the W Indies ,back in the Ramadin and Valentine days of the 50s-60s Thank God there was the little man in the score board, to watch ,as he rolled the number drums
  • Come on England, so many voices of doom on this thread
    We are all doomed.

I think, from the comments below (10 from 66 in total on CL), we've now gleaned that you do not like cricket one bit - or any other sport apart from football. That is your prerogative of course. You've lived in Australia for 43 years but still can't accept that Australians do like those other sports too. They might argue that some people in England have been brainwashed about the "beautiful game". But, for those of us that do enjoy cricket, might it be an idea for us to accept that you hate cricket and that you accept that we love the game which is why we comment on a thread that is devoted to cricket?

    (1)
No my daughter is a Storm member but i don't go to anything other than Football (soccer) ,as i have alluded to many times on different threads
When the Aussies treat our football with a bit of respect ,then i'll try to embrace other sports here The only sport the Aussie media, and there fore average Joe Blo is fanatical over, is Soccer bashing, in very subtle ways-Seriously
.AFL or village green football ,does nothing for me and cricket i get more entertainment when we 'put down' our cat at the vets .Yet  the average Ossie goes bananas over these sports Don't mind a bit of rugby, but geeze, is there anything more enthralling and skillful as the 'beautiful game' Then there is Charlton

    (2) Joffa turned up for a couple of the early Melbourne Heart (City)games then was never seen again. Probably got confused by the skill and science of the 'beautiful game' compared to the village green football ,that is Aussie Rules

    (3) The Melbourne Cup stops the nation because we get a days holiday .Just another con for Melbourne to claim to be the sports' capital of the world--- That comes over great, if you are prepared to accept that there will be extremely brief and limited coverage, of the beautiful game.

    (4)  If you guys love cricket so much you should move here to Australia- A F L in winter. Then it moves swiftly over to horse racing, then swooning on to the cricket, in the summer, along with the A League (soccer) . Here soccer is very conveniently neglected. Even so, in rugby loving N S W and Queensland. We should follow ALL sports, as my Aussie wife says. I say when they show some respect for soccer, I'll consider it. Until then all sports ,and cricket can get fucked.

    (5) As a footnote My dad took me to the Oval when i was about 8 (give or take) It was bloody hot day ( about 80 i would say -Larfs) and the drinking fountains were working over time It was England V West Indies with Ramadin Valantine and Sobers, and all .I was looking into the sun and got sun/ wind burn. I was bored out of my brain and as we were just behind the score board i was more interested in the man in the box, turning the score drums. He never took me again. I told this story to a guy on the train, that was packed with 20 -20 cricket nuff nuffs. I was about the only one there ,that had been to a coinciding soccer match. I am very quiet spoken, but loved to raise my voice, when i said i thank God i was born in Europe and didnt get brainwashed with sports crap, like here I got a few sideways looks Just before i got off i said énjoy the Ashes . He was still nice about it .But it doesn't take long for most, particularly Poms to get into the brainwashed situation, From my experience of over 35 years, the Scots and Croations Are more likely to stick to the beautiful game .Sorry for racism.  He, (late dad) also introduced me to Charlton in the late 50s and so began the sad story. My hero was Johnny Summers

    (6)
Blimy-If watching cricket is the answer Then things must really be bad

    (7)
AFL Season kicks off--Really. What an overrated 'village green' football code that is. compared to the 'beautiful game'. I'd go as far as saying watching Charlton is far better than watching that shit, Seriously, WTF am i missing something? Charlton 1---Gills ---1 Melbourne City 2---Melbourne Victory---1

    (8)
Keep your AFL 'village green' footy to another shit channel and or post ,not one for the BEAUTIFUL GAME. Yes even watching Charlton its a beautiful game. As for cricket, OMG what a mind numbing spectacle to watch. My late dad took me to the Oval to watch the W Indies in the mid 50s Ramadin  Valentine and Sobers etc, and  I was bored out of my brain, and he never took me again.
If any Charlton (or any soccer) fans want to compare A F L with soccer just Google AFL. then you will see what i mean Sheeple in Melbourne are literally BRAINWASHED with this shit Just watch commercial TV or pic up a daily newspaper

    (9) As much as i feel for the family and friends of Shane Warne This 'sheepy' wont be going to the Melbourne MCG, 'send off' for this cricket legend and larrikin, in their thousands Nor will i be watching it on TV-- I just thought that had he been a soccer player, like the legendary late Socceroo Johnny Warren, it was a 10 minute news segment, and see yer later.

  • Must admit I got very angry watching yesterday's performance..whilst I am angry with the players they are products of an extremely flawed system ( from coaching kids through to the lack of competitive 4 day cricket) ...see above...

I am biased I suppose but cricket is the beautiful game we need to cherish and nurture proper test cricket and ensure our cricketers know how to play it
  • "It's a great bunch of lads...inside the dressing room they're hurting...we have to take the positives from this tour etc"
  • Looking forward to an exiting full days play
  • Ridiculously good catch by Holder after England had started the day quite well
  • Recent dreadful England test performances actually make me rethink the extent of misery inflicted by being a charlton fan.
  • Our main batsman is in now
  • Lost by 10 wickets.

What sums up that batting performance for me is that our numbers 10 and 11 scored 97-2 between them whereas our top 7 managed 127-14 between them and if one takes out Lees' 62 in the match that drops to 65-12.
  • WI WIN BY 10 WKTS

disgraceful by England time for Root to give up the captain arm band
  • The terms pathetic, disgraceful, gutless, inexcusable and unprofessional….comes to mind.

I hope this sparks a major reshuffle to the ECB hierarchy, the county system & right down to the test playing squad.

I won't hold my breath though

I'm afraid to say that Andrew Strauss has to take some responsibility for this debacle. I'm not talking about the omissions of Anderson and Broad either.

    Back in 2015 this happened:

"Strauss wants to convince the English game that white-ball cricket is no longer the longer format’s poor relation. This means greater separation of England’s Test and limited-overs teams, with more players encouraged to become short-form specialists, more exposure for English players to the Indian Premier League and Big Bash, and persuading counties to make the domestic structure more friendly to one-day cricket.

This is the message that Strauss has been preaching, to give England the best chance of winning a home World Cup. “We need to get better,” he said. “And we won’t get better by treating one-day cricket as the poor relation.”

This change of emphasis didn't just affect the pros. I sat in a pre-season meeting for county age group parents when that message was passed down. This has meant that coaches are now looking for the batsmen that do have all the shots rather than the ones that can bat time The ones that might only have three or four shots but know when to play them - which is basically all Leach does when he bats. Most counties cannot afford to accommodate both types. There just isn't the money to do so.

So, if Strauss is going to take the plaudits for us becoming World Champions then he has to take some responsibility for what was to follow in the Test game. This didn't happen overnight but, as the Cooks, Bells, Trotts etc etc retired we found that the replacements just weren't there. We now have to endure the likes of Eoin Morgan claiming that The Hundred is the saviour of cricket. That is how far we have gone the other way.
  • Sorry I was wrong.
  • As much as Root's captaincy has been woeful at time there are two restrictions on him being replacing - one is that replacing him isn't going to improve our batting and two that there is, really and truly, only one other player who is guaranteed his place in the side and that is Stokes.

Miles away! You would have done better to predict that the match would be over before lunch on the 4th day.
  • Root has lost the plot reading his words on BBC. Keeps referring to how well we have played throughout the series. Even after that shambles. Bizarre.

He can't really say anything else. He wants the players to be with him and not against him so will try to see some positives. The public aren't that stupid though.
  • Averages for the top 10 batsmen making their debut since 2015 (coincidentally the year that Strauss made his pronouncement about the switch to white ball cricket):

    Burns        30.32
    Denly        29.53
    Lawrence   29.00
    Sibley        28.94
    Pope         28.66
    Crawley     28.60
    Foakes      28.11
    Stoneman  27.68
    Malan        27.53
    Hales         27.23

  • Root was also pushing it when he talked about a bad DAY yesterday, when the top and middle order batting was awful on Day 1
  • The problem if root goes, who would replace him?
