I would be tempted to ask Broad to fill the role for the next two to three years. If he can’t play every Test, he should be travelling and play captain/coach from the pavilion.
Pick someone to be his vice who will fill in when he can’t play and eventually take the role full time in a couple of years.
Might be unconventional but I don’t trust them throwing it immediately to a Stokes or Bairstow. Could Foakes be future captain material from behind the stumps?
I've been disappointed with Foakes in this series with bat and ball. He deserves a run but if he doesn't improve in both disciplines then he will be under pressure. The other aspect is that it is incredibly hard to keep and captain in Test cricket. You are, potentially, having to concentrate for 500 balls plus and six hours in a day and gee up your team that there us little enough respite let alone make vital decisions that influence the game. The biggest example of that is Tim Paine ridiculously wasting a review that cost them the Ashes.
This series was foakes first cricket since his injury that ruled him out of most of last season. It'll take him a while to get back to his best as it did Stokes after his break from cricket. He deserves a home summer to try and cement his spot. Agree he need to do better. If he doesn't then Billings has to come in.

Or give Bairstow the gloves back, and play an all rounder at 7 like Sam Curran
Indeed if Stokes was to become captain, it's possible that he'd bowl less, so we might need another bowler
Below is an indication of how the CC calendar has changed.
For the purpose of comparison, this season's fixtures start on 7th April and end on 29th September as opposed to those of 1972 of 10th May and 4th September respectively (they were also of 3 day duration).
So that's, effectively, 8 weeks at either end of the season and some 8 CC games that batsmen now have to face bowlers in conditions that suit seamers best. And the equivalent number of matches that aren't played in the middle of summer when spinners should have pitches that would help them to hone their game.

Curran is not good enough to bat 7 , nor is he a test match bowler.

12 home games, played at 6 different grounds, and only 4 at Canterbury
By contrast most of the away fixtures are at the main county ground
Back to my old bugbear.......over rates & time lost in the day.
SA v Bangladesh. 1st day of the 1st Test. Only managed 76.5 overs before bad light stopped play, even though the sun was shining at the time. Problem is not only did they lose 13 overs ( I'm assuming that they will not be made up as they weren't lost due to rain) but now that is the standard for the rest of the Test. As soon as the light meter gets to that same reading then the players will be off.
I just wonder how many overs will be lost in the whole test now.......40 ? 50 ? 60 ? At least it looks like at least a session, probably nearer 2.
Why is Harrison negotiating something that will affect cricket in this country for a decade from 2024 when he is leaving some two years before it comes into effect? Here is the full article in question:
The ECB is in advanced negotiations for a bumper broadcast deal that means the bulk of international and domestic cricket will remain on Sky Sports until at least 2034.
Tom Harrison, the chief executive, is expected to leave the governing body within the next few months and is understood to be keen to seal a ten-year deal with Sky Sports, which will begin when the present deal runs out in 2024.
The deal is designed to protect the broadcasting future of the Hundred, something Harrison believes is part of his legacy, and give some long-term financial security to the ECB at a time when the future value of international bi-lateral cricket is uncertain.
The present deal, which was signed in 2017 and is worth about £220 million a year, is the ECB’s largest source of revenue. It is not expected that the negotiations will lead to any significant increase to that amount but it will be a significant result for the ECB if they can secure a long-term ten year deal.
As with the present deal, Sky will share rights to some matches with the BBC, which has the rights to broadcast live four international T20 matches (two men’s and two women’s) and ten matches across the men’s and women’s Hundred, including the finals. It is expected that will stay broadly the same when the new deal is signed, although there is the possibility that the ECB will ask Sky to allow the BBC to broadcast more of the Hundred.
The one stumbling block for Harrison in these negotiations is that he cannot finalise a new deal until all the counties have agreed to give the ECB and Sky media rights to their grounds and there are on-going discussions with the county chief executives about this.
Each of the first-class counties own the rights to anything broadcast in their own grounds and their own players who are not centrally contracted by the ECB and will not hand over those rights until they are comfortable with what they will receive in return.
They will also want to ensure that they can continue to broadcast live streams of any domestic championship, 50 over cup or T20 Blast matches that are not being shown on Sky and have the ability to sign deals with other outlets such as Facebook or YouTube for those matches.
"The ECB want to create a positive buzz and excitement around the Test team. To do this, we are selling exclusive rights to Russia Today, to ensure that as few people as possible can see them lose every game"
England vice-captain Ben Stokes says he cannot make any plans for the summer until he has undergone a scan to assess the extent of a knee problem. The Durham all-rounder struggled with the issue during England's recent series defeat against West Indies. The County Championship starts on Thursday, while England's first Test of the summer against New Zealand is scheduled for the start of June. "At the moment, no training until I get these scans," said Stokes. Speaking on the Round the Wicket podcast, Stokes added: "Then we find out what is going on, then hopefully can make a plan from there on."
Watched it live. He equalled the IPL record in doing so and ended up 56 not out off 15 balls. When Cummins came in, KKR were in a spot of trouble at 101-5 off 13.1 and still needing 61 off less than 7 overs. They won with 4 overs to spare and the final over bowled by fellow Aussie, Daniel Sams, went for 35!
Shows the shite state that cricket is in that Surrey with 2 of the best young spinners in the country (Virdi and Moriarty) name neither of them in the squad for the championship opener despite both of them being fit and available. Instead opting for 4 seamers plus the allround seam of Ryan Patel and the part time spin of Will Jacks. I know its April but its bad for cricket. how the hell are we expecting to produce top level spinners if the conditions give you a disadvantage if you actually play one let alone 2.

That's what happens when you play on the 7th April!
Rain in the air AND a howling wind, so horrible for the spinners

Agree, there is no way you could play one. Its a joke that its so obvious we dont even put one in the squad. Cricket is dead.

Its totally ridiculous isn't it ...this is no time to play cricket..nobody gets anything from it all ( apart from broken fingers) ...and I beg the question are there any spectators?

yeah, cant wait for the home Ashes to be free to air again.
not read the above, but presume it mentions test match cricket being back on terrestrial TV like it was in 2005
