Posting without reading the posts on here, but if the Garner deal was agreed in principal last week as reported, I wouldn't be surprised if Garner tells Sandgaard to shove it now
When the press conference to unveil our shiny new manager happens, TS is going to face some awkward questions
Whilst I appreciate him not wanting to confirm anything not finalised, the social media messaging has undoubtedly soured relations with the press and left anxious fans confused.
Perhaps a formal statement made earlier as the story has developed might have helped ease tensions.
In harbouring ambitions for us to become a Premiership Club, this sort of episode needs to be handled better in future rather than being allowed to spiral out of control.
If I'm taking what they say at face value, that no decision has been made, it's shocking that they've had a month+ and they haven't even decided who they want. Farce.
I think by the end of this week we’ll see the new coaching team, 2/3 new signings and the new kit. Everyone can then moan/praise the relevant announcements, which will be a nice change of pace to people making noise, despite very little actually being known. Roll on the start of the season!
maybe just maybe TS has alternatives lined up and hasn’t decided ?
More likely it’s just that he needs / wants to meet in person before confirming the appointment in case it changes any opinions from the zoom style interviews to date.
But actually this PR game may just be creating a small bit of drama/interest in what otherwise would be a relative non event in the close season and has actually made the choice of manager seem better than it was first perceived.
Faux outrage of amateur communication matters not a jot whilst we are third teir.
On balance I’m more inclined they are just trying to create a bit of noise and PR to big up the confirmation when it comes as otherwise we are barely newsworthy.
I wonder what this will mean for Jason Euell. Am hoping he will be kept on. Need some continuity and someone who understands the club (if anyone does anymore!).
Not sure what that statement was meant to achieve and say what you will about MS, he is apart of the club and can register opinions as for the good Doctor, she has no right to do this so publicly and contradicting RC was bang out of order all because she is TS missus.
An appointment does need to be made soon even if it just puts an end to things and we can get behind the new gaffer.
I have no inside knowledge whatsoever, however I'm pretty sure this all comes down to one of two things.
1) TS has another iron in the fire and is waiting on them accepting/declining before confirming Garner. I am pretty neutral on Garner's appointment, didn't know much about him before he was rumoured to be in with a shout but he will get my full support if he ends up being appointed.
However, I think it's fair to say he wasn't rumoured for many other League One jobs and certainly none the size of Charlton so this is probably the best opportunity he's going to get. I think its also fair to say he's probably not welcome back at Swindon given everything that has gone on so if he does decide he has had enough of this circus and withdraws then he is essentially making himself unemployed. Which makes me think that TS is probably pretty confident that no matter how long he makes Garner wait he will end up taking the job if TS can't secure his preferred candidate.
2) This is a bluff by TS to lower any compensation fees he has to pay Swindon. If we are led to believe the move for Garner involves both him and his backroom team then you are probably looking at a six figure sum in terms of compensation fees for all of them. Probably not huge figures but still a sizeable amount of money.
TS dislike of agents and their fees has been well documented and maybe he feels the same about having to pay compensation and is hoping this tactic will get Swindon to reduce their demands. As mentioned above I've not seen Garner's name touted for many other jobs, and you'd imagine a return to Swindon is off the cards, so perhaps TS is trying a high risk game of poker to make Swindon think he's actually prepared to walk away and leave them with a manager and coaching staff on their payroll who are probably not going be welcomed back with open arms by Swindon and its fans.
I am hugely supportive of TS and will continue to be. However this appointment has turned into a circus and makes us look a completely amateur outfit.
Football will always be full of people wanting management posts, and we are still an attractive club all things considered and there will never be a shortage of people applying for the manager's job.
However, you want to be appointing the best in class and the best in class usually already have a job, and/or will have lots of other offers as well. When you have the ability to pick your job things like the soap opera that this appointment process has become probably factor into your decision making. I'm sure there are a lot of managers out there taking note at this process and thinking it might be worth giving Charlton a miss.
Secondly, deciding to pick a battle with Cawley seems a strange move. I have always found his coverage of Charlton very fair and balanced and I'm not sure trying to publicly do battle with someone responsible for a large majority of your press coverage is the right way to go. I have no doubt he will continue to cover us in a professional manner however there is no good to come from trying to take on the local press. It never, ever works in the long run. If the club had an issue with Cawley reporting this I'm sure an off the record conversation could have been held and the matter put to bed.
There are lots of show-men in all walks of business. Larger than life characters who probably don't have much of a filter and say how it is. I've no real issue with all the baggage that comes with TS in terms of his flamboyant personality, the social media presence, guitar solos etc. It makes for an enjoyable ride and streets ahead of where we were under RD and ESL.
However every appointment of a manager is a big moment in a club's journey, but I think this appointment is really significant in terms of how TS's tenure will be judged. He has a lot Riding on it, as do the club and by extension we as fans. TS has probably made a lot of mistakes however let's not kid ourselves, nobody will be moaning at the end of next season about his music career, or appointment of his son, or lack of a CEO if we end up getting promoted.
The very best operators know when to just crack on and take a decision, and leave the fan-fare for later. This feels like it should have been one of those moments when TS kept his cards to himself, stayed off social media and went about deciding who was going to be the best person to manage this club for next season and then went about getting it over the line. Instead we have what can only be described as a pantomime with TS drip feeding fans information on LinkedIn, his wife having a public spat with the local press and the official site making an official announcement that there is no official announcement.
I actually feel sorry for Garner if it does end up being him as all the attention is going to be on why TS and the club seemed so desperate to avoid confirming it was going to be him, as opposed to the usual publicity and discussion about playing style, track record etc that new managers normally get to bed themselves in.
As a side point, all this does is further strengthen the point about not having a CEO here running things properly on a day to day basis. With a proper CEO, how much of this would have either been sorted by now or got as out of hand as it has? Controlling the narrative is difficult as it is, controlling it from Colorado is even harder.
There was no need for the tweet from Raelynn. There was no need for the official club statement. Choose the manager. Focus on getting THAT and their back room staff sorted. Oh and some players. Focus your energies on not making the same mistakes as last pre season. Please.
Yes WIOTOS but that is an unnecessarily aggressive statement.
So many people who read "incorrect" as "completely untrue".
Should have said nothing or at least no mentioned the press reports which are probably substantially correct (Garner is coming) but not 100% or at least not yet.(Garner and assistants are not yet a done deal).
Seems they can't win.
Airman was on here earlier saying Sandgaard's mrs shouldn't be saying stuff on twitter, and the club should do it through official channels. Now they've done that people are saying they should've said nothing at all.
That said i do agree it's all a bit of a mess, and i'm still convinced it'll be announced officially once TS arrives in London.
Not quite. I said: “If they have an issue with anything Rich puts out they can very easily contact him privately or they can publish a statement via the club setting the record straight if necessary.”
In this case I don’t think either the tweet or the statement was necessary or appropriate, but both arise from a failure to manage the message properly in the first place. I wouldn’t blame comms for that.
I think TS is struggling to handle completing all this from America with the privacy he wanted. He thought he could just quietly get on with it without outside interest like in any other business, he didn’t (quite naively) factor in that football is not like any other business and opinions, hype and speculations play a huge role in football, even at this level.
The ongoing negotiations are normal of business, but unusual in their length in a footballing sense.
I definitely think the biggest mistakes they’ve made in the last 30 days is responding on social media to people.
I am supportive of TS and totally believe he has the best interests of the club at heart but I think he needs to give the fans something positive soon just so we can all get behind the new manager and team ready for next season.

Said for a while, I think he got a complete shock to his system about the pressures of owning a football club, especially an underachieving one at this level.

Send and sign agreements securely from any device. Over 85% of agreements are completed in less than a day, and 48% in less than 15 minutes.
