Very good performance all around, really enjoyed that. Glad Kirk stayed on because I would have taken him off but I’ve no doubt that goal will give him a lot of confidence. Thought everyone played well special mention to Clare and Dobson for me.

What a performance. Morgan and Clare were sensational and Rak-Sakyi is clearly a talent. It was so refreshing to see us dragging a team around the pitch when they were down to 10, how often have we seen us just fall to pieces in those situations?

If Stockley can hold up the ball like he did in the second half more consistently and stop heading the ball directly at the keeper every time then he might still have a place in this team.

Also a final point from me. I thought Clayden was very good. Do we even need a new left back if he can play that well?

Garner is obviously seeing what we as fans can't in training since he has taken over - must be so frustrating for him getting told what players he needs by us - what this says to me is that maybe we should just trust the guy he obviously knows what he is doing.

  • Wow - Garnerball delivers and then some! Finally the wide players get in the box and take the pressure off Stockley who played his best game so far this season too. Morgan thriving in this environment and Kirk finally showing what he's capable of with an attacking left back behind/ahead of him and that young lad from Palace looks a handful! Great cameo from Leaburn too - as Curbs said we really need to manage his game time carefully and not overuse him but what a threat from the bench!

I thought it was the best we’ve played in years. Probably since the first half of the Nottingham Forest game, the difference being we had the end product this time. We made a good Plymouth side look very poor.

TS must allow Garner to strengthen the side further and if he does I think we could be in for a very good season.

It's all been said already but for me 1) I've never really got Albie Morgan but so far this season he is like a different player, I'm sure some of that is down to BG but keep it up Albie, well done 2) so pleased for Kirk, good game overall but excellent second half, got the goal he deserved and looks like he's finally happy here 3) JRS looks a real talent 4) pleased for Sam Lavelle, would much prefer to see him alongside O'Connell regularly than Inniss 5) Sean Clare was outstanding, not going to shift him from the right back spot 6) nice to see a Leaburn score in front of The Covered End again.

One negative, Stockley needs to be burying these headers, could be costly in another game.

Oops, 7) not being a left back I thought Clayden played well especially linking up with Kirk. Well done lad.

As I often do I sat behind the home dugout. It’s always interesting to watch the manager and how he influences the game from the sideline.

What stood out was how calm it was (even Innis). There was no haranguing of the ref or fourth official. Players were encouraged and there was very little micro management going on. It was particularly interesting in the second half to see how much Garner cajoled and encouraged Kirk. It was a smart move to keep him on for the whole game - the second half allowed him a lot of the ball and it must have been tempting to throw CBT on with the oppositions down to ten men. He can only have gained confidence from how he played and the goal he scored.

Clare was excellent. He struck up a good understanding with Rak Sakyi who was also very exciting to watch and played the simple pass when needed.

The other standout for me was Morgan. I liked how he took responsibility today, he wanted the ball and wanted to dictate the game.

The only slight disappointment was Fraser. I don’t think he was at the level of Morgan or a slightly subdued Dobson in midfield. There’s a player there for sure but he needs to do a little more on the ball.

Anyway, there are the makings of a very decent team, squad and management team developing. Hopefully exciting times ahead.
Very interesting view, thanks for sharing. I do, like you, enjoy being close to the dug out to hear what’s going on on the bench - though find it so hard to follow the game from there!

I mentioned this about Fraser during the match, I think a lot of people are going to look at him and think he does nothing or is under performing because he’s not an all action player like some of our others.

However for me he’s been the exact sort of player we have been missing in the middle of the park for years. He really keeps things ticking over, and allows other players to flourish. Garner and the coaching staff will have access to his stats etc, but if he continues to keep Payne and McGrandles out the team it will be because he is doing his job well.

Very pleased for Kirk, must have given his confidence a real boost, would I keep him....he'll yes...Raki was excellent as was Clare and Morgan.
Stockley worked very hard, great cameo from Payne and then of course there was Leabuuuurn!!
No one disappointed, everyone played their part, really looking forward to Saturday and being at The Valley....There is a buzz about this side....this COULD be a very good season!

I don't know if there is a way of finding out. But I reckon we played more passes tonight than in any other game ever in Charlton's history.
  • Fantastic performance- so enjoyable to watch. Could have easily had more goals...

    Didn't look like a L1 team.

Lots of really good stuff tonight. That is what a well coached side looks like. There’s a plan and the player understand it and their individual roles in it, but it’s not so rigid that all flair and individual expression has been stifled. The test will be when teams start to plan to try and stop us but it’s looking much more like 18/19 in that respect, rather than the scatter gun tactics that followed from Bowyer or the rigid systems of Adkins and Jackson that no one seemed to know what they were doing in.

True about Fraser. Just a couple of times today he got the ball during a passing phase and it broke down. Clearly he has a particular role to play and I’m confident he can do it. Garner seems to have an ability to bring the best out of players who perhaps are playing within themselves. Let’s hope he can do it with Fraser.

What a cracking game of football and Plymouth played their part first 20 mins end to end stuff , good football but then we took control , JRS nice header , Stockley pen but both missed sitters as well .. then the cracker from Clare what a strike ..

Never easy second half against 10 men who were just on damage limitation .. and we dropped of them pace but Plymouth goal woke us up and we dominated the rest of the game with goals from Kirk and Leaburn

If this is the new Charlton well it’s excellent , the football this season compared to last is like supporting welling one year Barcelona the next massively different massively pleasing

Well done to TS , BG and the players do we need anyone signings ..not left back no we don’t

MOM so many but Charlie Clayden for me

Faultless. Refreshing to see such fluid football and patterns of play.

Could list the whole team but Morgan, Rak-Sakyi, Clayden and Stockley stand outs for me, with Morgan as MOTM. I wouldn’t have been upset if he was let go this summer but that’s why I’m not a football manager - bossed it this evening. His first half was one of the best midfield performances I’ve seen at The Valley in a while.

Won’t get carried away yet as this is Charlton, but looking very promising.

Yeah totally. As Airman mentioned in another thread the real proof in the pudding will be when teams start to adapt to our style of play and come up with game plans against our players.

Good to know we have some quality we can bring on in that midfield though to change things up.

A quick positive mention for McGrandles, I heard the Comms team say that he made a positive influence once he came on and I agreed, well done.

    575 passes tonight.

Compared to 523 vs Wednesday, 441 vs QPR, 319 vs Derby and 352 vs Accrington.
  • But where are the goals coming from? Stockley can't play this formation!!
