You would probably expect them to come 2nd or 3rd in most groups at this world cup?
They aren't "making up the numbers".
No you wouldn't?
Of the games we have seen so far I would expect them to beat Qatar and give Ecuador a game. Recent draw v Senegal who are drawing with Holland after 70 minutes....
Let's see how they get on against USA and Wales who are 4 and 1 place higher than them in the rankings.

Other than Qatar there isn't a single team in the tournament I'd be confident that Iran beat. Especially after that performance.
we look to have what is obviously needed to go far in the tournament, great goal scorers in top form .. great start against an admittedly very poor and dirty team

They are definitely making up the numbers.
Wales?
Based on tonight Wales are the worst team in our group - Bale a passenger
as an honorary Iranian for the day, I have high hopes for us. (winky mcsmileface)
hopefully be a good game, Iran are the highest ranked Asian team sitting 20th in the FIFA rankings and should be better equipped to deal with the weather conditions.
I think it'll come done to how Iran set themselves up.

I reckon England to win by a single goal
Single goal/four goals… same difference
I thought the ‘Are you Scotland in disguise’ chant was a bit harsh Dave, I mean you’dve kept it down to 5 😉
fascinated by some of the reactions on here tbh... we just scored 6 goals in the world cup... AGAIN??? Like... i've seen a few now... it doesn't happen all that often. Brazil, France, Germany, Argentina.... if it was so common they would all be doing it. We apparently can do it for fun. Same people saying Iran were crap would be creaming their pants telling us how much we would get destroyed if it was any of those teams that just did that.

NOBODY wants to play us I guarantee it.
Agreed. If we'd watched Brazil/France/Argentina score 6 then everyone would be saying they look great and it's going to take a very good side to stop them.
Whilst i'd certainly question how the hell Iran are ranked 20th in the world, they're still not a bad side and have players at some decent clubs in Europe. They beat a Uruguay side with Valverde, Nunez, Suarez etc in a friendly 2 months ago.
I'd expect them to give USA and Wales a tough game as they'll know realistically that we should win all 3 games and that those are the 2 games that will decide their qualification. A win v Wales and they'll (quite likely) be second in the group going into the last game.
As someone who is usually very pessimistic wheb it comes to England I thought we looked really good yesterday. Yes defending can be improved but the art of defending is something most sides are lacking in
I'm not taking anything away from the performance yesterday as to score 6 goals against anyone in a WC shows that you have great attacking ability. I just wish we would approach every game like that in terms of intent. This squad will score goals against any team if we play to our strengths, unfortunately I think when we come up against the better teams we might revert back to trying to keep things tight which just exposes our weaknesses rather than playing to our strengths. I hope not but that's my fear
I think it was the best performance of the competition so far by any team by some distance so we certainly can't complain even if it is early days. One game is very hard to draw too many conclusins from. Iran are not World beaters but they are supposed to be better than they looked yesterday and it may well be that they couldn't cope with England's attacking quality, pace and movement which made them look worse than they actually are.
They could still give USA and Wales tough games and even still progress from the group for all we know. We will have a much better idea of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the teams after the next game. But I don't think you can criticise England at all. And I would if there was grounds to do so.
Now for the ref. I don't want to focus on in game decisions around the football, but he has a duty of care for the players and you could see them using smelling salts on the keeper. It was obvious for his wellbeing he shouldn't have continued and FIFA has to urgently look at this and make sure it is an isolated incident.
One thing I like generally is the refs playing more added time. It will be interesting if it has a positive effect on time wasting but it could well do.
Didnt realise this one, but Queiroz didnt actually lead Iran to the World Cup.
Some bloke called: Dragan Skocic did, yet was sacked in September
Not trying to take anything away from our win here, but kinda explains why Iran really disappointed, compared with what a lot of people (not CharltonLife) were saying when the draw was made.
That was enjoyable yesterday. I don’t give a shit how pony Iran were, our passing was crisp and confident. Little triangles even on the edge of our own box, we oozed confidence from the first minute. The pub was absolutely buzzing as well, awesome day.
Turned it off as the Wales bias pissed me off. John Hartson talking like a fan for example, if that was Neville or Wright people would be up in arms.
They havent been unlucky etc..there just shit!!
Went to a golf dinner recently where John Hartson was the guest speaker. Let’s just say he wasn’t a gifted public orator.
Plucky little Wayels .. even if they were in a different group or, as is more usual, they had not qualified, the vast majority of Welshies would be cheering for any team we (England) were playing .. there is a move to change their name to TeamCymru .. a chant of: Cymru, Cymru, Cymru ...mmm, has not quite the same impact as Wayels, Wayels, Wayels methinks ..
I think its important for when we play tougher games that we dont change the system. We might need to change some of the mentality and plays within that. The full backs might not be able to get forward as they did and when they do Rice may need to drop in more. Bellingham and Mount will need to get up and down even more and will have to work harder. The forwards will have to press more etc.

But please please please dont go to a back3/5
this .. the 4 2 3 1works well for us and even the '1', Kane is not a conventional striker in this formation .. early days yet but against Iran, our pack of attackers was very formidable especially with Rice and Bellingham running midfield. There is no reason to suppose that if they play with freedom and confidence, they can't do the same against any team .. one gripe, we did concede two, that could cost us against a good team
