lovely memories of 1982 in Spain at the time of the Falklands war .. we played France in the first round against a cauldron of Spanish hate, boos, whistles, pro Argentina chanting .. we won 3-1 and pissed the Spanish (and the French)  right off .. titanic performance especially from  skipper Bryan Robson who scored a memorable goal .. a repeat today would be just perfect ..

    1982 World Cup Finals Bilbao Spain 16th June 1982 England 3 v France 1
The first world cup I remember with England playing in it. Couldn't believe it when we scored after fifteen seconds.
Recognise all except the player between Mariner and Shilton. Probably the left back?
    Kenny Sansom?
    Thanks

Reflecting on last night and still gutted. Another glorious chance gone and i genuinely feel if we'd won last night we'd have gone on to win the world cup.

I honestly don't think we did anything wrong and we were slightly the better side, but in games like that it comes down to fine margins.

A couple of question marks for me though:
    1. Saka was absolutely terrorising their full back, so it was very bizarre to take him off and put Sterling on.
    2. James Maddison, one of the most in form players in the league heading into the world cup, didn't get given a single minute all tournament. Does he need a move to one of the big 6 to finally get a proper chance with England?

Lastly, i actually hope Southgate stays on as manager. The players all seem to love him and if he leaves then who is there? I've seen names like Tuchel and Pochettino mentioned, but i honestly don't see either of them being interested in an international job yet.

Good England performance that. Deserved more from the game.

Saka is my new favourite player.

He chases back often and is always a problem for LBs going forward.

I like his consistency.  You know what you're going to get from him

There was one point before Saka went off when I was urging him to track back a bit quicker. Maybe Southgate thought he was tiring and with Mbappe on that side, needed extra protection?

Afro Chelsea sterling isn't as good

He was our best player during euro 2020. Always a threat, full of energy and one of the 1st names on the teamsheet

Moral of the story. Don't leave man City for non title contenders and a club that constantly sacks managers.

The trouble with 50/50 matches are they can go either way and rely on the Referees to get decisions right. Seems churlish to complain as we were rightly awarded two penalities but the foul on Kane carried on into the box and Harry would have scored two out of three pens on the night.

1st half France played stress free and their passes were smoother and their marking tighter than England. The 20 seconds or so from the foul on Saka (not given) to the first French goal was as sleek as it comes and Rice found that trying to tackle great players (Mbappé) is difficult when in full flight. Great strike for their 1st goal by Tchouaméni when the ball goes through the legs of Bellingham, where the split second unsights Pickford and we are 1 down. My fears that the French would exploit the space behind Shaw did come to fruition 1st half when both Dembélé and Griezmann were excellent with the talented Tchouaméni.

2nd half we managed to get on top for large parts BUT the French scored two goals from open play in the game and blame myself as I said Giroud would score important goals in this WC unlike his barren effort in 2018!

We have an improved squad and talented younger players than 4 years ago but the two goals conceded against Iran were a warning that more talented teams would exploit and France did this twice in open play.

Gutted for Kane as that will haunt him for ever; all England fans until our final whistle is blown ☹️

Chris, we were not the better side in the first half when the French tactics did a job on England with Dembélé and Griezmann as dangerous as Mbappé.

Madison's Injury affected his no show in the early rounds and yes he could have got on last night but Phillips (Leeds) in the Euro's and Pickford( struggling Everton) show that being at a top 6 club isn't paramount to an England involvement.

Agree with Saka comment, I never understand why you take off your most dangerous player on the night ?

Must say I’m proper gutted for Kane. He’s a model pro, lives a clean life, never arrogant and a fantastic role model for kids.

Sometimes it would be nice if the nice guy got the breaks.
I’ve just caught his post match interview.  I hope the nation rallies round him as everything you say is correct.  Model pro sums it up for me, and a bloody good player as well.

We need Harry to feel the love as I think he has an important role taking us into Euro 24 and WC 26

I suppose it’s difficult for Prem clubs given the likelihood they’ve got players from all different nationalities potentially up against one another.  Timing is poor though - especially as Arsenal have Saka who is probably one of our best players for years to come

Any truth in the rumour Nicky Bailey was a specialist penalty coach for the England squad?

    Jammy French gits.

Just wonder if we'll ever do it. Is it going to be another wasted golden generation? I hope they're learning lessons here about the steeliness required to win tournaments and not getting disheartened.

Gareth's choice to bring on his favourites was very frustrating. Mount is not someone you bring on when you're chasing a quarter-final (if at all). Sterling... maybe if you're winning and want to play on the counter but not if the oppo are sitting back.

That being said, we still deserved to go through. But that's football.

(Also, the refereeing for the quarter finals has been atrocious.)

I would like to see Southgate stay on for the Euro's and help the development of Bellingham, Saka, Foden and Rice who are so comfortable in the England ambience created by Gareth and his staff. The best of Foden is still to come but we saw flashes of it in this WC. Add James to the above list and we have 5 players that are on an upward curve. James is our best right back and Trent-AA will have to reinvent himself as a midfield player despite his sublime talent on the ball.

The England team put out last night would've beaten Italy in the Euro finals but no Dr Who Tardis so we can't go back in time as Bellingham, Saka, Foden have improved in that short time since and Gareth didn't know whether to stick or twist in the Euros final.

Which other players can force their way into this squad or even starting 11 before the Euro's; Elliott of Liverpool ?

I suspected it was a 50/50 game and it was. Sadly the coin fell on tails but I can't criticise Southgate or the team for that performance. If the ref was perfect, which never happens, we would have shaded it in all probabiity. In football terms we edged it but there wasn't anything between the teams and I expect France to win it now as I would have expectd us to had it gone our way seeing as Brazil are out.

I suspect what happened with the foul leading to their first and the penalty that wasn't given was that the ref saw contact but decided there wasn't enough of it, which was ridiculous, but a reason why VAR wouldn't go against it.

I worked out before the tournament started that we would lose to France in the QF, so I've been expecting this & not as disappointed as in previous tournaments.

But France weren't that good, and England was better than expected, and it really could have been a different story. Yes, France did have an extra gear, but they weren't finding it easily

Chalobah? Hudson Odoi? Madueke?  Tomori? Leaburn? There must be others.  Could certainly do with a couple of CBs and another forward.

As good as we were in the match and tournament it is sobering to think France will likely win this without Benzama, Pogba, Kante, Kimpembe, Nkunku and Hernandez.
