Usually I am full of loathing for the team that beats us …. But if it’s France v Argies, I still think I would want France to win
That’s a given for any English fan.
Why?
I might be missing something here, but for neither of the G.O.A.T players to not win the world cup would be a travesty.
Though Morocco get my backing!
Are you unaware of the history and bad vibes rivalry we have with them……this goes back to 1966 and was made even worse when Maradona cheated us. Off the pitch they also dislike us for the Falklands war and the sinking of the Belgrano……all of which added to the mutual feelings of antipathy. I am surprised you needed to ask.
So because of what happened before I was alive I should dislike them? The off the pitch stuff has nothing to do with my views on a nation now, I'd argue they were right to be pissed off for the Falklands war.
I think the single good point is the hand of God, but that was forever ago.
Some of you seriously need to learn to move on!
How can you argue as clearly you don't know what you are talking about. They invaded people who didn't want them there and Britain went down to put things right. That obviously pissed the Argies off but they were not ever in the right.
As for learning to move on, if you don't learn from history you never learn how to put things right.
Whether you were alive or not is irrelevant.
As an Irishman, the irony in this statement is at the top of the scale.
I thought last night was a decent game, with two well matched sides, spoiled by a poor referee who wouldn’t be out of place in L1. England have some cracking young players who will make them a force for the next few tournaments and a manager who has built a great spirit in the team.
Supporting the Republic of Ireland feels a bit like supporting Charlton. Watching our young prospects go on to play in the World Cup 😉

So you'd sympathise with the 2000 odd Brits who lived on the Falklands the day the Argies turned up to occupy it, then Tel?
England can hold their heads up high. in a perverse sense it is good that the missed penalty was the deciding factor as it was within England's own gift and takes away a little of the focus on the refereeing (which was dreadful). At least the inquest will not be of the "we wuz robbed" variety for the next few years which wold have been unbearable. That said, there is no disguising the fact that this was a massive chance to win a major tournament which lacks an outstanding team. I think England would have gone on to win it had they managed to progress yesterday. If anyone put a fiver on a Croatia v Morocco final for the tournament they would have got unbelievable odds. It can't happen, can it? This utterly bizarre world cup has got the last four it deserves in my view. The shocks and unexpected twists and turns (and great stadia) have done nothing to allay the fact that this tournament should not be happening. I have struggled to garner (sorry) any interest in it and now that the domestic interest is over I couldn't much care what happens from here on it. Only the romance of Morocco keeps a modicum of curiosity in place for me but I suspect the French will see them off comfortably. I get the impression that the interest in this plastic world cup has, generally, been way less than usual. The reasons for that are plentiful - Qatar and all that, the fact that the world is going to hell in a handcart etc. Onwards to the next Euros which England must, surely, be favourites for. ITV should be banned from coverage of England's games henceforward and please, please pretty please, whoever the broadcaster(s) may be, can we get shot of the excruciating Tyldesley, Matterface, Cowan, Sparkes etc. Now, back to the real stuff. Takeover anyone,,,,?

The best thing about all this is that when we usually go out of the WC, you are in close/pre-season, it’s the summer and you’ve got that new season optimism that sort of naturally kicks in. This time round, it’s 0 degrees, we’ve dropped to 18th in League One, have some of the worst excuses of professional footballers that have ever worn the shirt and a narcissistic twat of an owner that could be on the verge of dragging the club into League 2.

I worked out before the tournament started that we would lose to France in the QF, so I've been expecting this & not as disappointed as in previous tournaments.
You must have made an absolute fortune at the bookies then
Well I managed to eat some of the best food ever created and not hear the result. I watched it when I got home. Wow, we really didn’t deserve to lose that. Feels weird saying that as an England fan. Proud of every single one of them ♥️🏴
I guess Michael Oliver might have mixed feelings. He was the best of the refs in the quarter finals. FIFA might not want to give an English ref a second final in three

I'm not sure that you really know what you're talking about. It's far more complicated than that because you are not going far back enough in history. You're just repeating what the British press have told us and missing what is omitted from our education.
These invaded people that you refer to were simply descendants of original invaders of the early 19th century.
There is no geographical logic to arguing that the islands should be part of British territory. They were only ever won by force.
Besides, in 2016 the UN commission ruled that the islands lie within Argentinian waters.
Personally I think that the islands should belong neither to Argentina or the UK. They should be given to the descendants of the indigenous people who lived there before the arrival of Sir Francis Drake. They should have their independence, take up governance, and who knows, by 2100 we may be playing them in the group stage of The World Cup 😉.
Watched the game with an Arsenal mate who claimed he’d much rather Arsenal win the league than England had won the World Cup.
Is that’s because he’s not old enough to remember ‘66 and the joy that the win brought with it, or is his view (club over country I guess) common these days?
I’m pretty gutted today, because I think we would have had a decent chance to go on to win the tournament had Kane buried the penalty.
After ‘66 I would never thought that we’d get to 2022 without winning another WC, or at least getting to the final.
But at least we’ve got the rest of the L1 season to look forward to. 😬
Thought they did us proud last night, just a shame Sako was taken off, perhaps he had taken a knock, my memory of Mbappe grinning when the pen was missed wound me up. Hope the Morrocans give him a few crunching tackles. As many have said above Ref very poor.

The Argentinians are nearly all descendants of colonialists and white immigrants too, so they have no more right to their land than the Falkland Islanders.
And the Falklands are 300 miles from Argentina, so it's hardly on Argentina's doorstep either.

Grealish and Rice are English players, that Ireland tried to claim via the grandparent rule, so Ireland have nothing to complain about
Indeed the England football team has rarely in recent years had players who either weren't born in England or who didn't grow up in England (e.g. Sterling who came to London as a young child). Unlike say the England cricket team, which has massively benefited from non natives.
A major, if unromantic, reason for Morocco's success is that they have an awful lot of European players. Ones born in Europe and developed by clubs in the major leagues in Europe, and who could have played for France, Netherlands or Spain.
Indeed there are an incredible number of French born players in the tournament. Enough for two squads
well we came close but the squad just lacks that little bit of stardust which makes the difference between coming close and winning .. feel REALLY sorry for Kane and I suspect that it will take him a while to get over that miss .. the referee was incompetent and the game should have gone to a European not Brazilian official. At least the Colombian VAR official gave us one penalty though how he missed the earlier foul on Kane in the area defies belief and that fuck up could well have cost us the game .. Terrific header from Giroud won the game and shows that for all the pretty passing to and fro, there is still room for a big old time type centre forward bravely getting a header on target following a great cross from out wide. France will have problems against Morocco but I fancy them once more to be facing Croatia in a repeat of the last final, and that will be a first for the football World Cup
We were the better side for much of that and I reckon we can genuinely say we were unlucky there. Ironically, I feel less bothered at getting knocked out than in past tournaments, despite feeling that we were unlucky. I think that maybe we have a better team than in the past, but the levels of hype aren't the same.
I've a lot of time for Harry Kane and I feel very sorry for him, but I wish he hadn't taken the second penalty. It must have been hard enough thinking through the first one: What does Lloris know? Where should he put it? etc. etc. To have to do it again with all the added questions of whether to stick or twist all seems too much burden. I hope in future we designate a 2nd penalty taker and no-one is expected to do two, back to back.
Ultimately though, I don't think we should blame it on the penalty miss. The big thing for me was not being able to score from open play, and we have to give France quite some credit for that.

Yes Britain never forced itself on another country ever against the will of the people?
Reflecting on last night and still gutted. Another glorious chance gone and i genuinely feel if we'd won last night we'd have gone on to win the world cup.
I honestly don't think we did anything wrong and we were slightly the better side, but in games like that it comes down to fine margins.
A couple of question marks for me though: 1. Saka was absolutely terrorising their full back, so it was very bizarre to take him off and put Sterling on. 2. James Maddison, one of the most in form players in the league heading into the world cup, didn't get given a single minute all tournament. Does he need a move to one of the big 6 to finally get a proper chance with England?
Lastly, i actually hope Southgate stays on as manager. The players all seem to love him and if he leaves then who is there? I've seen names like Tuchel and Pochettino mentioned, but i honestly don't see either of them being interested in an international job yet.
Chris, we were not the better side in the first half when the French tactics did a job on England with Dembélé and Griezmann as dangerous as Mbappé.
Madison's Injury affected his no show in the early rounds and yes he could have got on last night but Phillips (Leeds) in the Euro's and Pickford( struggling Everton) show that being at a top 6 club isn't paramount to an England involvement.
Agree with Saka comment, I never understand why you take off your most dangerous player on the night ?
I didn't say first half, i was talking about overall. We had more possession, more shots, shots on target and corners. France i thought were pretty ordinary, which is why it's even more frustrating we're out. If they'd cut us apart and won convincingly you'd hold your hands up.

Lloris has played all bar one of their games.
Saliba has got splinters in his arse from sitting on the bench. You would have thought they might console their star England player first, no?
They knew exactly what they were doing.
(I agree wholeheartedly by the way).
I watched it when I got home.

Yes the lads put in a shift, and they played well and deserved more.
But when all is said and done. It’s an all too familiar scenario:
1) Dodgy ref
2) Controversial decisions
3) A missed penalty
4) Saying we will come back stronger
5) Quarter Final exit to the first top team we face
I’m not knocking any of the team or manager - but when you take a step back the end result is all too familiar.
