So, Willey was one of our few success stories of the WC and wasn't offered a Central Contract because he wasn't deemed to be the future. Another of our better performers was Malan. Now Willey is more than three years younger than Malan but the latter was given a Central Contract. some six weeks ago. But we now discover that Malan is unlikely to play for England again. Someone please tell me why this doesn't smack of muddled thinking?
Dawid Malan is the biggest casualty as England seek to revive their white-ball teams in the wake of a woeful World Cup campaign. Malan has been left out of both the T20 and ODI squads for next month’s tour of the Caribbean and although Rob Key, the managing director of cricket, said it was possible for him to regain his place for the T20 World Cup next summer, it is unlikely Malan, 36, will be seen in England colours again.
Have Roland Duchatelet and Thomas Sandgaard taken over England contract decision making? Malan is given a one year contract, then immediately dropped and told his T20 form isn't good enough, when in the next year (covered by his central contract) the major white ball cricket is the T20 world cup.
Willey in the meantime, who would definitely be a serious option for next summer's T20 WC, didn't get a contract and retired from England.
Liam Livingstone who's been pretty underwhelming for England this year gets a 2 year contract.

That is the problem with central contracts. They take no account whatsoever of form. Wood might never find that form again but has a three year contract or Archer who might never play for England again. That money can't be re-directed to another player so someone coming in will, potentially, have no such comfort but might be the very one to be persuaded to go and play for a franchise in Timbuktu
Key has admitted that they considered reducing or even doing away with central contracts and making big payments for being selected for international squads and also much larger payments for playing. Central contracts aren't preventing the likes of Root from playing in the UAE T20 rather than for England so what purpose do they now serve?
Oh wow! I played for Mudgeeraba CC in the 91/92 season. Matthew Mott was in opposition that season. That's their home ground, just down the road from Carrara Oval - the scene of the infamous Gower/Morris fly-by incident in 91.
A blind man could see what was likely to happen without proper preparation. In fact, the question was asked on here as to whether there really is a difference between 50 and 20 over cricket - they are both white ball after all. Well Key seems to have stumbled on the truth:
“I made the mistake of thinking that it will be all right when we get there [India] and that’s not been the case. You made the assumption that without playing lots of 50-over cricket this is such a good team that it will just slip into old habits and away we go. We’ll be able to go out there and win.
“What we needed to do was get out here and understand 50-overs cricket out here better, which we haven’t done. We’ve underestimated what it would be like."
Use to really like Key but that has to be one of the most amateur quotes I have seen. What the fuck are you being paid for?! Just thought we would turn up and see what happens. Absolute berk.
Livingstone in the ODI squad is a shocking rewarding of failure
The Lancs Action Group on Twitter went off alarming at one stage during the summer, when Livingstone went off to play in a ProAm Golf tournament, rather than play for Lancs.
Wasn't really sure where to put this but looks like Freddie is going to be coaching in The Hundred as well as being around the white ball setup for the Windies tour.
Absolutely gutted by this. Sussex just can't seem to keep hold of players.
Interesting that Hants have paid compensation because Orr was still in contract. Doesn't that, effectively, make it a transfer payment?
It sounds like a really weird deal on the face of it , Orr wouldn't extend (had a year to run) but Sussex terminated his contract to allow him to go to Hants but got Compensation from Hants for him.
So yes I think we are ultimately looking at a transfer fee for a cricketer.

John Simpson moved to Sussex from Middlesex with a year left on his contract, I don't recall any compensation being paid though?
I find it odd that cricketers can move when under contract anyway, unless they're clearly unwanted at their original clubs. Why would a club let someone leave, like Middlesex let Simpson leave, when he's a key player?

Middx are under severe pressure to balance their books. They were fined £50K, via a reduction in payments from the ECB from £150k to £100k this coming year and that has meant drawing up a financial plan that will include budgets up to the end of October 2025 showing a sustainable year-on-year profit, with limits on spending on players. Simpson would have been one of the highest paid players on their books so releasing him from his contract was a means of helping them financially and for Simpson, to be offered a three-year contract by Sussex at his age, that gave him more stability.
Orr is a more difficult one to comprehend but if Sussex are under the impression that he will leave at the end of next season whatever happens and the compensation allows them to invest in a player who will have more longevity at the Club then it might make some sense. Might.
I think one of the issues for England in 50 overs games is they have some players like Bairstow and Malan that when they are on it they are terrific players but they can be a weak link when not. You need a platform and when you don't get it consistently, it affects the rest of the side.
A good idea, as white ball cricket can be interminably slow. I'm sure half an hour can easily be chopped off the time it takes to play an ODI, without impacting the fielding captain or affecting advertising too much.
A "stop-clock" will be trialled in men's limited-overs internationals in order to regulate the time taken between overs.
The trial, running from December to April, will require a fielding team to be ready to commence a new over within 60 seconds of the previous one ending.
Failing to meet the time limit on three occasions in the same innings will result in a five-run penalty.
Maxwell has just hit 104* off just 48 balls to win the 3rd T20 against India off the final ball of the match. The bad news for Australia is that Maxwell flies home now and misses the final two matches!

Has he been retained for the IPL or is he in the auction ?

Maxwell is one of 18 players retained by RCB.
England players retained:
Moeen Ali (Chennai Super Kings)
Reece Topley (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
Will Jacks (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
Jos Buttler (Rajastan Royals)
Mark Wood (Lucknow Super Giants)
Jason Roy (Kolkata Knight Riders)
Johnny Bairstow (Punjab Kings)
Sam Curran (Punjab Kings)
Liam Livingstone (Punjab Kings)
England players released (although a few of them have said that they weren't returning anyway):
Nathan Lyon has signed for Lancashire for the whole of the 2024 season. I bet the likes of England prospect, Tom Hartley, will now be thrilled at the prospect of now carrying the drinks for the duration of the County Championship season!

It'll be interesting who takes more wickets next season, Lyon or Parkinson.
The PCB has appointed former international cricketers Kamran Akmal, Rao Iftikhar Anjum and Salman Butt as consultant members to chief selector Wahab Riaz. One of them was investigated for spot fixing and left out of the team because of that and another was found guilty of that, served a five year ban and spent some time in Canterbury Prison.

Nothing in the Sussex announcement about any compensation being paid for Simpson so I find it very unusual with the Orr deal.
