When you have to submit your article in order to meet the print deadline before the end of the game........

  • Vaughan on TMS suggested it might be the greatest innings ever, never mind just white ball. Astonishing. So good I even briefly forgot he's an Aussie.

All three teams on 8 points - New Zealand hold the NRR advantage currently, followed by Pakistan and finally Afghanistan on negative NRR.

-New Zealand v Sri Lanka on Thursday
-Afghanistan v South Africa on Friday
    -Pakistan v England on Saturday

Semi final scheduling is an interesting one. India will play their semi final in Mumbai UNLESS it's against Pakistan, in which case that semi final will take place in Kolkata and Mumbai would host South Africa v Australia.

    - Mumbai SF on Weds 15/11 (India v New Zealand/Afghanistan OR South Africa v Australia)
    - Kolkata SF on Thurs 16/11 (South Africa v Australia OR India v Pakistan)
    - Ahmedabad F on Sun 19/11

Probably the greatest innings of all time.
    I can't remember a greater innings.
    Absolutely magnificently outstanding.

I would have thought NZ will get the last spot. On their day much better than Sri Lanka. Shame our game against Pakistan isn't taking place at the same time.

Another issue with this tournament in that the side playing last (Pakistan) will know exactly what they need to win by in order to progress.

well unless you have 5 games played at once it would be impossible to make it fair
  • Brook and Atkinson for Livingstone and Wood. England won the toss and chose to bat!

Yeah i'm not saying it's practical with the current format, just that the schedule lends itself to potentially give an advantage to someone.

If it was a 12 team tournament with 2 groups of 6, they could easily have the final 3 group matches in each group played at the same time.

  • Bairstow's awful WC continues - plays a nothing shot to Dutt and is caught at short third man for 15 (17)

    48-1 off 7
  • Malan goes to his 50 off 34 balls including 10 boundaries

    69-1

Root continues to get out in attempting a stupid shot.
Just play conventional shots you idiot
  • Root tries to premeditate a ramp but gets himself in no position to do so and is bowled between his legs for 28 (35)

    133-2 off 20.2

    Malan 85* (70)
  • England - the gift that keeps on giving. Malan is run out (for the first time in his ODI career) for 87 (74)

    139-3 off 22
  • Brook bounced out for 11 (16). Every single wicket to date we have contributed to be it shot selection, execution or negligent running. It's not as if Bumrah, Shami and Jadeja have been bowling. Story of our World Cup really.

    164-4 off 26.5

We're all hoping for a NZ win right?
  • Buttler is gone at the game. For now at least. Twice in a row he's out chipping it to mid off. Out for 5 (11)

    178-5 off 30.1

No, I'm hoping NZ lose and it stays interesting for longer

  • Has a captain ever dropped themselves from a game?

If not then i think Buttler should be the first for our last game. Absolutely woeful tournament.

A heavy win. We need Sri Lanka's NRR to worsen

    RACIST !!!!
  • Interesting that Malan not only top scored today, he had by far the highest strike rate too.
  • And then Moeen does what Moeen does. One handed down the ground to mid off for 4 (15)

    192-6 off 35.2

  • We really are pathetic.

Last six innings in this WC:

    Bairstow - 71 runs
    Root - 57 runs
    Buttler - 48 runs
    Livingstone - 60 runs

That's four of our most played top seven. 236 runs in 24 innings. Maxwell was only 35 runs short of that in one innings - and he was not out too!
  • Will Mott keep his job after this tournament?

I know he still has a long time left on his contract but this has been a shambles.

That has to be debated. I still come back, though, to the fact that we left it far too late to establish firstly what our best ODI side is and then to give those enough games in preparation. If the argument is that half this side shouldn't be in the team moving forward, how do we really know that this was the best squad to go to the World Cup?

Remember that India played 29 ODIs in the last year and we played just 43 in total in the previous four years. Of those, any number of the players were elsewhere feathering their nest despite the fact that they had massive Central Contracts e.g. Root playing in the UAE T20 instead of an England ODI series - he then has the cheek to complain that there weren't enough ODIs.

For reference, Netherlands have three centrally contracted players and the amount that they are paid for that is less than one of our players is paid as a match fee for playing in a Test.

That isn't Mott's fault. That is the ECB treating this WC as far less important than their own Mickey Mouse competition AND allowing players to not have to play for England when they are on a retainer of anything up to £700,000 with the associated guaranteed insurance, physio etc etc.
  • Mmmm. Were those murmurs the gloves against the pads?
