Ben Duckett is opening for Notts today, which makes you wonder why Zak isn't playing yet.
The reason is that Zak decided that he didn't want to play in the first two matches and he's presumably waiting until the wickets and weather get a bit better. It's down to the players in conjunction with the ECB (and to a very small degree the county) when they play as confirmed on the website whereas Duckett is not to make this opening game one of those he is likely to miss:
Zak Crawley is following ECB advice to not feature any two matches of the first section of Vitality County Championship fixtures this year. The right-hander has therefore decided to miss Kent’s first two matches of the 2024 season, making himself available to play for Kent across all formats until England’s Test Series with West Indies in July, barring any further international call-ups.
England Under-19 wicket-keeper and former Lancs academy player, Jack Carney, will be given a number of games in our 2nd XI.
Interesting. Is that a trial for a permanent move? Seems strange that they'd let him go.
He's a triallist. I get the impression that they are keeping all options open but I'm sure if he does well then he will be given a contract. The one thing I don't believe they want is to sign another established keeper on a long term contract - one because it could complicate things not just now but also in the future and two because it's far cheaper to award a rookie contract to someone of a requisite age.

I was more confused why Lancs would let a 19 year old go if he's played for England U19s.
Weird for the Kent wicket keeper production line to dry up, but he looks a sensible signing when we've already got Billings for the Blast and Finch, who's "good enough" for everything else.

England U19s is a stepping stone to potential success but there are any number that don't make it in county cricket. The so called "pathway" to the U19s is one that is dictated by circumstance and promise and a bit like a 2 year old racehorse some just don't "train on".
The recent Kent keeper production line was very much as a result of the work of Ray Willis (age group and specialist keeping coach) and his son Simon (former 1s keeper and Head Academy Coach), neither of which are heavily involved at Kent any longer but who were big influences on Billings, Robinson and Cox. Equally, Lancashire have Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, George Bell (England U19), George Lavelle and Matthew Hurst (England U19) who all keep so Carney is going to struggle to get a game in their 2nd XI let alone the first team.
It's far too early to start thinking about relegation but I'm not sure that I am comfortable with the fact that Worcestershire, one of the other sides tipped up to go down, are 177-1 against Warwickshire. At least one poster on here will be happy with that!

Warwickshire coming at Kashif Ali with water guns. Fools

It can't be very often that at this time of year Messrs Hannon-Dalby and Rushworth have returned combined figures of 0-98

I have not read a single season’s preview that hasn’t had us in bottom two this season !
We really do need the batsmen to perform because there isn't much hope for our tail wagging when the highest in the order of "9, 10, Jack" has a FC batting average of 6.25 and once achieved the record of six ducks in a row including three goldens!
