There are lots of comments about Gordon on here. They were raving about him on TV which left me scratching my head about this obsession I feel England fans and pundits have with pace.
Gordon is just another is this long line of wingers we get in the team when they’re young and then two to four years later they’re gone again.
He has pace and can put a cross into a dangerous area. That’s not good enough - you need to be playing the cross in with real intent. Also you need to have more about you than just crossing ability. Players need more than he (and Eze?) at this level of football. Every other part of his game is just too hit and miss.
I just feel this year that 12 changes in personnel from 18 months ago at The World Cup is too much. A few new players like Mainoo, definitely, but many of the other newbies are no better than those left out who have more experience.
I thought Gordon was excellent and one of our only bright sparks 🤷♂️
I beg to differ. He's a 'knock it past 'em and run' which, admittedly, he's good at, but I don't remember a single occasion when his final ball amounted to anything more than being overhit or easily cleared by the Icelanders. I only remember him having one effort on goal and the less said about that the better.
It makes me want to spit when I think that Grealish has been unceremoniously dumped because he had 'not had a good season'. In the Bosnia game he played an exquisite pass through the eye of a needle to Maddison which lead to Kane's goal as well as a pinpoint pass for TAA's goal. But while Gordon will be potentially labouring up and down the left, Grealish and his cocktail sodden calves will be sunning themselves on some exotic beach. An injustice...
VG is my go-to regarding football matters on here, and sums up yesterday's poor showing with this; We play like that Sunday we are fucked but I know we wont. Can't wait for it to start.
Think one headache Southgate has is up front. How do Kane, Foden, Palmer all play together when they tend to occupy the same space in attack build-ups?
All 3 of them love sitting just outside the D waiting to receive the ball with their back to goal or on the half-turn. However, they can't all be there at the same time, which happened multiple times during the game today.
I noticed that also but I saw it as a useful exercise in playing through the middle, rather than with crosses from the wing. It was enjoyable at times.
I am now 76 and have seen some shyte performances by various England sides over the years but I can say without fear of contradiction, that that was the worst I have ever seen. Our crossing was absolute garbage from start to finish, in fact, there was nothing of any quality on show in any shape or form.
Really?
World Cup 94 qualifying with Carlton Palmer?
Perhaps you have worded it badly, but we did not play out in America.
I watched the highlights of an old England match yesterday and the commentator was mentioning our "problems on the left" but how the man filling in there was "doing a job".
The man was Steve Hodge and the game was the 1986 "hand of God" game against Argentina!
So it seems for my whole life weve struggled to fill that role. And dont forget we had John Barnes in 1986!

Completely agree, might not be indicative of his game as a whole, but last night his final ball was awful.
No good 'knowing you've got the beating' of the right back as they kept saying if you run past them but then overhit a cross, or put it straight into the one defender.
But I see him being used as an impact sub against tired legs, he won't start - and it might stretch teams and create spaces.
i m o the biggest problem, and there were problems all over the team, was distribution from the back .. too slow and too inaccurate .. Stones and Trippier are past their best and I have never seen what Guehi has to offer, both Branthwaite and Quansah are far better defenders .. anyway the die is cast and we are where we are .. Iceland looked the better, more polished team, accurate passing, speed of foot and thought .. embarrassing for the (as World Cup Willie sang) favourites for the cup .. last thought is Harry Kane properly fit ????

He had them on toast all night. Yes the final ball was disappointing but next time it won’t be and he’ll win the game for you.
I barely paid attention to him during the Premier League season but you can see why he got double digit goals and assists. He has attributes that can’t be taught and he’s not afraid to use them to good effect.
Everyone moans when players don’t get picked on form. But when it results in a fan favourite like Grealish being dropped, suddenly form goes out the window.
Grealish had an assist and was very good in his last game.
Last night we were turgid. Sadly too many of Eze, Gordon, Bowen play for mid table premiere clubs (8th downwards)
If Grealish was at Palace he'd be the best player on the pitch by a mile. If we need somebody to win us free kicks, keep the ball etc he's the best English player by far.

That’s mad, I was at the game and thought Gordon was absolutely pants. Mis-controlling the ball, rarely beating defenders, lack of a ball into the box.
On the other thread I did say would have taken him over Grealish though.

He should have gone.
Turn that logic around: how much better would Eze, Gordon and Bowen look if they played with better players at Man City?

Nothing is guaranteed but he’s equal third highest assister in the Premier League last season behind only Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer.
He was also player of the tournament last summer when the U21s won the Euros.
He’s going to frustrate because you watch him and think he should be doing even better than he is. But if he gets hot at the right time as happened last summer, he could win tight matches against France, Spain, Germany for us by himself.

I mean, you think they’d get in that team?
Probably equal or better than the 1023 odd minutes that Grealish managed. 😬

If Gordon beats France by himself I'll come on and apologise!
The thing about players at Man City (like Grealish for example) is that they have big match mentality that means they won’t be overawed by a Euros knock out game. Grealish has come on and made the difference in big games v Madrid for instance.
Eze and Gordon may look like stars in a prem game v Brighton.
It was a pretty terrible performance but i never read too much into friendlies. A lot of players probably had half an eye on not getting injured where as Iceland were right up for their 'big' night out at Wembley.
Also need to remember that next weekend we'll probably be bringing two of the worlds best players into the lineup in Bellingham and Saka. The side will look better balanced for sure with those two there.
Midfield is a bit of a conundrum though. Do we persist with Mainoo for the opening game and hope it works with him and Rice or do we play someone else there (Trent? Gallagher?)

It's a real shame he had that fallout.
