As an England fan, I obviously wanted us to win. Any trophy winning team has tough games and dips in performance en route, so I’m clinging desperately to the hope that this is where we scrape through then come into our own in the next round(s).
The trouble is, (if you include the Iceland friendly) this is the fifth game in a row where we’ve been awful. Not just bad. Absolutely fucking awful.
It seems Southgate has decided he’s willing to die on the hill he’s sitting on. The ponderous play, the lack of pace, the unfathomable team selections, the lack of any apparent in-match tactical changes, the lack of substitutes until nearly the end of the game. It’s frankly bizarre. He’s got away with it again today. I can’t see him getting away with it much more.
As an aside, I worked in Slovakia for a year and made good friends there. The other day I chatted with one of them and he joked about knocking us out, but he didn’t really believe it. I feel sorry for them after that game. They deserved to go through. But that’s football I suppose.
We've been lucky... and we've not been great, but cmon you miserable pundits - So many times we've been in this type of scenario where we've gone out with a whimper.
Instead we kept plugging away, got a lucky break and that is sometimes all you need... SO GET BEHIND THEM!!
Southgate's dream job would be managing one of those iconic defensive Italian teams, the way we always sit back when we take the lead. He just can't change.
There have been SO many times; Argentina - Germany - Portugal, where we've deserved to get a win against them, because we've played well, and its not happened
Yes Slovakia arent of that level, and we shouldnt have needed to be in that position blah blah blah - But its about time a bit of lucky goes our way.

Southgate needs to get his coaching team together and make some serious changes in how we approach these games going forward.
Switzerland won't give us a chance for a 90+ minute equaliser if we play like we did today.
