I'll never forget the pain of watching Charlton teams, season upon season, not battling, not doing the basics, not playing with any fight or passion. Doch's captaincy seems like a big part of the change that turned the tides for us. He was not really my cup of tea as a player, but I couldn't fault the leader and he's played a huge role in getting us where we are now.
I'm hoping he's one of the few Charlton players who doesn't get booed upon their return.14 -
One of our best captains. Always gave his all and never hid even when things weren’t going right. I do hope he is invited back to the Valley (Brownie will make this happens) as I’m sure fans would like to show their appreciation for his service.

Lovely open letter but being very picky, Jacko captained us to safety in the Championship in 2012/13, surely someone could have corrected his statement before posting that he was first to captain us to safety after a promotion?2

We will miss Doc who has been exemplary since he joined the club. He got us promoted and we should be forever grateful.
I saw one of his interviews with Charlotte I saw how much he wore his heart on the sleeve for our club with his passion, a great CAFC captain!
Doc is a proud man and whoever he signs for will be lucky to get him on board!

Greg Docherty has written the following open letter to Charlton supporters following his departure from the club:
Charlton Athletic,
To be named captain of such an iconic football club was nothing short of a privilege. I felt the weight and expectation that title carries, but I can wholeheartedly say I gave my absolute all to represent the club properly every single day with the upmost respect that I felt it deserved through the good and the bad moments.
I joined the club with one aim: to help make Charlton an established Championship club again. Being the first captain to lead the club to promotion and then safety the following season is an achievement I am, and always will be, immensely proud of.
Thinking back to the play-off campaign fills me with so much pride. From the first-leg pitch invasion at full time, to seeing 40,000+ red flags and shirts at Wembley and lifting the play-off final trophy, it’s a feeling I don’t think will ever be replicated.
It goes without saying that I am devastated to be leaving this club but football moves fast. I’m so proud of what I achieved here and I leave behind an amazing chapter in my football career, an incredible group of teammates, staff and people behind the scenes who make this club what it is, along with genuine friendships that I’ll cherish for a long time.
I’ll always be grateful for my time at Charlton and everything the club has given me, but football moves fast I’m now excited to see what the future holds.
Thank you for all of your support. It’s been a pleasure.

Goes down as a bit of a legend in my eyes, never hid, never shirked his responsibilities, scored a couple of bangers, was captain at Wembley and you could tell how much it meant to him to be our captain.
Will be go down in history as a master puppeteer of the ball? No
Will he go down as the guy that joined us when we finished 16th in League 1, and left us when we were in the top 2 of the championship? Yes, and for that I'll always look on his time with us as a roaring success9 -

Genuinely gutted he is going, my favourite type of players in football are the ones who roll their sleeves up and fight for the shirt, it isn’t about them it’s about the club. This guy was that type of player, thanks for everything and good luck Doc.8

Modern football in particular is brutal. In the old days, when teams got relegated or promoted, the core of the team would stay the same, whereas now the gaps between divisions are so great, that promotion sadly means that a lot of the players who got a team up, have effectively made themselves superfluous.

Quite emotional about this.
Doc never hid, never shirked a challenge, never stopped trying. He embodied exactly what we, as fans of the club, want to see our players doing on the pitch for the 90, all game every game. He got Charlton, and there are very few players in recent memory I could say that about. And he understood the privilege and responsibility of being captain, and he acted accordingly.
Was he a playmaking technician with a wand of a left/right peg? No. But that didn't matter for what we needed. He was outstanding off the ball for us, which is a massively underappreciated quality, and such a crucial one given last season we were defending most of the time.
We've evolved a bit since, and I'm gutted there seemingly isn't a place for Doc, ... but I get it. And that's sad.

Yes, I know it's a cut throat business but why has he fallen so far? Obviously stuff I wont be privvy to but is it simply not fitting into NJ's game plans?

His attitude is exmplary, but his footballing skills are not what we need to progress in the way that NJ wants to progress. its hard, but seemingly fair with a mutual financial agreement, that he can now go and play for anyone else he wants.sillav nitram said:If I'm honest, I feel uncomfortable about this, what did/has he done to be treated this way?

I don't think the club could have been fairer to him and his family. We can't make someone buy him off us / loan him out.2 -

A real shame but hopefully he can get a contract as a free agent. Had there been space for him to remain as a squad player you know he would still have given 100% effort.1
