Thanks Doc. A great servant to the club.
  • If I'm honest, I feel uncomfortable about this, what did/has he done to be treated this way?

Yes, I know it's a cut throat business but why has he fallen so far? Obviously stuff I wont be privvy to but is it simply not fitting into NJ's game plans?

And Yes, good luck for the future Doc.
He fell out with him last year then they patched up as NJ needed him, similar to TK.

    Forgiven not forgotten

Not unexpected and from a footballing perspective absolutely the right thing for the club to do.  Still, it's always sad to see such a professional and committed player leave.

Always put in a shift ..a great example to the younger players..hopefully he'll be remembered as someone who took the club forward. A good pro and I wish him nothing but the very best .Thank-you

The number of players that have come and gone over more than twenty years that literally didn't give a toss - Greg Docherty was an absolute breath of fresh air and I would imagine a great fella to have around.

Yes I would criticise that he was not up to champ standard (especially playing alongside Coventry), but it was the manager who picked him - and the guy never shirked, very rare in this day and age to have a player like that - around a lot of other likeable players (also rare, and sorely missing at CAFC during that same time period). The end of last season alongside Coady he showed a backs against the wall mentality, and really dug in to help us stay up.

For those reasons alone, he should get a mightly welcome when he's back at The Valley, and wish him all the best, with a lot of thanks. Cheers Doc.

I don't know if its holding a grudge as much as his total belief/commitment to his own vision. Normally its a strength and I'm sure it's part of what makes him successful but if anyone dares to argue or question it I imagine he takes it rather personally.

(For the record I am very much team NJ and want him to be our manager for as long as possible, I am just speculating on why he falls out with senior players sometimes.)

Highlights the reality of the precarious nature of a career as a professional football player I suppose.

It’s why players have to be ‘mercenary’ on occasion I suppose (not suggesting he was rather just highlighting the other side of the fence compared to a supporters view).

Despite the circumstances a very dignified statement from him.

Echo what's already been said. Thanks for everything, Doc. One thing we never had to worry about with you was leadership and workrate. A brilliant servant to the club and by all accounts a lovely and very popular guy. Go well.

As Dean Keily observed in an interview for ‘My Only Desire’ magazine, it’s the manager’s job to replace you in the team with someone better and your job, as a player, to make that as hard as possible for him through your performances.

I’ve no idea what, if anything, went on behind the scenes between the manager and The Doc, although I suspect that Nathan is simply making a decision (granted a tough one) which is in the best interests of Charlton Athletic. That is, after all, his job.

Things change at football clubs, as they always have and always will. Even the greats, like Mark Kinsella, reach a point where it’s time and they have to move on.

Hopefully Doc’s status as a free agent will help him negotiate a good deal at another club. He still has a lot to offer as a player and a model professional.

  • Sad to see him go but not surprised. When NJ talked over the summer about the need for ruthless decisions I immediately thought of Doc. The Middlesbrough away game summed him up perfectly - endless energy in hunting down Boro players forcing them backwards, or winning tne ball in tackle, passes it back to Boro - repeat for 90 minutes.

Deserves an assist for the goal at Wembley for whispering something or nothing to Alex Gilbert making the keeper think he would take the free kick and caught him by surprise when Macca did.

Also, as someone else has pointed out, when he was a sub and Ibby Fuller was about to come on at half time he called him over to do some quick passes and to give him plenty of encouragement. Need others to step up and offer the leadership provided by him and Coady. I don’t think Lloyd Jones leads in the same way

Greg Docherty will be fondly remembered in Charlton's history.

He was a limited footballer, but he always gave 100% and was an excellent captain and human being.

His performances were somewhat up and down, but overall his level of performance was as good when he left as when he joined.

He was a victim of his own success in part, but more so the success of Nathan Jones and Charlton.

Nathan Jones knew that he would need to be ruthless this window and once again he was proved correct.

Farewell Greg, I believe that you leave with the very best wishes of all Charlton fans.
  • I remember coming away from Huddersfield in the promotion season when he got sent off cost us the game and after an average start really didn’t take to him

A few months later he really came into his own as player and captain and the end of last season really showed his leadership

Nothing but respect for him great captain good league one midfielder and a top bloke hope he gets a good move

Hope he finds something quickly. Never hid, always battled but technical side just not enough to go forwards.

What is his grudge with Doc? There was a rumoured falling out last year but then Doc played a lot after that. Not sure this is a grudge, I think this is just a case of evolving beyond a player.

Jones had made some good and ruthless decisions this summer .  Kaminski, Macca, Berry and Doc , along with Dykes imo were not good enough .  All bar Kaminski made good contributions for us but it was time for all to move on.

Good luck, Doc .  Classy way to leave.

Id tend to agree that to get to where we need to be we need better than Doc, however when you take in to consideration we have kept -

Mwama (could be great and has looked good last couple games but still untested, personally dint have a problem with giving youth a chance)

JRC (who hardly got a look in last season and most his appearance were as a sub)

Ouma (again an unknown quantity that we seem to have to get fit before he can make the squad)

Ollie Skipp (widely derided by leicester fans and was relegated last season)

Was Doc worse than all these ?

Best captain we've had since Jackson. Quality fella, shame to see him go, but can understand why.

He's a top top pro, he'll find a club no problem I'm sure, lots of clubs would like to take him (on a free).

Classy goodbye message, but is he really the first promotion captain to the stay the up the following year? Wasn't Jackson captain under Powell?

Jason Pearce was as good a captain as Docherty , admittedly in a much worse team after the 2019 playoffs

Yeh that was an odd comment. Jacko definitely did it.

  • Thank you for playing a huge part in getting Charlton back on their way.

You served the club with respect,  dignity and played a crucial role in bringing back that real togetherness and pride into the shirt and the club

Go well Greg, and best of luck for the future. I hope you find a new suitable club soon.
  • Always looked like playing for Charlton mattered, whatever the opposition, whatever the score.
