Yeah, I'm a bit sad.
I really felt that this club was going places when I popped in to the Valley in last August to watch the Leicester game and I can't help thinking that as Club Captain, Docherty must have been a huge part of that. I'm not going to make myself upset by speculating about what the motives might be. I obviously wish him all the best for the future, and even if this is down to something like money, I certainly won't be booing him if he ever turns up at the Valley again.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Best Skipper we've had since Johnnie Jackson...
He stats may look average, but where are the stats for 'leadership'? Because Doc was a leader, on and off the pitch.
I always remember the game when Izzy Fullah made his debut. Izzy ran on the pitch, and straight to Doc. Doc put his arm around him, and told him where to go. Later, MBick came on, too. Doc was never more than 10 yards from either of them. You could hear Doc from the AC Stand, shouting to them, telling them when to sit, when to press. Outstanding.
It's ironic, really, his last game was against Spurs. Yes, we got pumped, but look where they are now? And Doc is exactly the type of character that team of multi million pound players needs. A skipper, a leader, someone to tell them where to go, and what to do.
That's something that any team needs. And I hope that someone, somewhere, looks beyond the analytics, and says "Yeah! Doc's the man we need!"

I had the pleasure of meeting Doc on holiday last summer after Wembley. I’m sure it will
come as no surprise that he was a lovely guy - very friendly, and clearly a real family man. Exactly the captain we needed for the last 2 years, and I’m sure he leaves with very best wishes from everyone10 -
Lots of nice words and without going too over the top I’m not sure without someone like him on the pitch and in the changing room for the last few years we’d have moved up as quickly as we have. I imagine his influence around the club has been immense in our development and turning us from a shitshow into a proper club. Cheers Doc.8

He will be missed. I know it sounds like a small thing, but even the following of new players, Liking their post & greeting them into the club will be a loss to us. He looked to be excellent at making our new players feel welcome. Lets hope that Lloydy can follow suit and keep that side of things alive. All the best Doc.2

I would not call it ruthless. Just the normal process of improving the squad once moved to a higher level. Happens to literally hundreds of Championship players. Just part of their highly paid profession..Starinnaddick said:

It’s right move for Doc and the club, if we are to progress and improve. Doc sensibly will know that he’s better playing at a lower level, I’d be surprised if he’s not sign by a Scottish team. Last season he really gave it his all and will always remember how at the last game of season V Hull he carried on whilst in a lot of pain. Absolutely agree best Skip since Jacko. Great skipper, great guy. Yes it is ruthless that we've moved on, but if we weren't willing to go down that road we'd have had Albie Morgan rather than Doc in our midfield for the past 2 years2

Some very well deserved tributes for The Doc from both the club and supporters.Out of possession, he was one of the better players in the division, with great commitment and an incredible engine. In the pre-season training videos, he always led the way in the brutal long distance runs and only Conor Coventry could get anywhere near him. The Doc absolutely maximised his ability to achieve what he has done in his career and he deserves the utmost respect.
More fundamentally, his leadership and total professionalism helped the club and the team achieve a much needed cultural change.I’m sure he would do an excellent job north of the border, although as a free agent, he can still sign for clubs down here outside the transfer window. Wherever he ends up, his new club most certainly won’t have any concerns about his level of fitness or professionalism !11 -
Maybe we were going to keep Doc until recently, so he would have continued as captain. I’m a little upset about this. Led by example on and off the pitch. He was outstanding in the last couple of games last season especially the Hull game where we needed to win. Not sure what’s gone on behind the scenes but wish Doc all the best.0

The Charlton Fans in Scotland group had sponsored Doc for the past couple of seasons and we are all really sad to see him go.Genuinely a model pro who always gave his all and lifted the standards across the team and the club. His influence and part in our recent success is hard to quantify and has undoubtedly been much greater than his tackling and short passing on the pitch.He will be much missed. We hope he finds a good home soon to progress his career - possibly back north of the border.
And maybe one day we will get our much requested Q&A with the now ex skipper.

I think it's the right decision to bring in better players and there were two different occasions in the past two seasons where Doc was dropped because the performances weren't up to scratch but on each occasion he came back in and offered the drive and determination we needed to get over the line. I really hope we have that kind of personality in the squad without him as I think there will be occasions this season where we need a player like him. We've made a good start but unless we're safe in midtable obscurity by February I suspect there will be times where we wish we had a Greg Docherty to come in and just ruin other teams' attempts to score goals and help us grind out some points. He's been an incredibly likable character in a far more relatable team than we're used to and I'll miss him a lot. I really wish a team had come in for him and pried him away rather than him being a victim of squad number limits but that regrettably is modern football.People might remember Doc the next time we see someone like Thierry Small and boo him for being a 'greedy bastard'; the club will leave you behind if it suits them just as much as you would leave them. I don't blame a player for walking before he's discarded9
