Impressive how well we've done in the swimming with the lack of facilities we have.
Indeed, just the 796 public swimming pools to train at, including 53 that are Olympic length (50m).
The UK has 14 Olympic size pools (50x25m) with a 15th being built in Cambridge. Paris has 20.
Plus 41 other 50 metre pools, including University of Bath and Manchester Aquatic Centre which aren't too bad at turning out decent swimmers. We are fortunate that in the Olympics they swim lengths rather than widths.

Plus 796 other pools, the vast majority of which host swimming clubs that build the strength we have in the sport.

so are the majority of our 50m pools narrower than an olympic one? or not deep enough?
I haven’t personally audited all of them. I’m sure there is a website with the answer somewhere. All I know is that they are 50m long, which is the same length as an Olympic pool, so if you want to practice in a pool that is the  same length as an Olympic one, they are a pretty good starting place.

    is this not it?
  • 6ft 8in Teddy Riner is now a 3 time Gold medalists in 5
    Olympics games.

Big Ted talk like Thierry Henry and has charisma and  var var voom with the French crowds who chant his name.
You can guarantee that if he played for Charlton, he'd be outjumped by a 5' 6 Millwall striker for their winner.
  • Ok so the athletics coverage. Hearing lots from the panel on the BBC coverage and seeing none of the decathlon earlier or other stuff clearly going on, cheers in the background. Discovery has the pictures but no commentary to provide context. Understandable as this panel costs money but I think that, like football, they put too much faith in talking heads.

British bloke in the trampoline soon I think.

Just won a silver in the rowing, with the world's most annoying BBC commentary team who gave it to the UK at 200m.

Actually I feel the standard of BBC commentators has been pish-poor this year, and I really cant see how Jeanette Kwakye warrants a sofa position. Shes no Des Lynham, more Des O'Connor with her fake laughter.
Presenting and commentating on sport is something which looks easy, until you see it done badly, when you realise how good the likes of Des Lynam and Barry Davies were.

As an aside, when I see some of the football presenters out there now, it baffles me how Scott Minto ended up doing Charlton TV, when he's much better than many of the ones on regular TV
He's a middle aged white male.

    Women's 800 metres:
26 year old GB Jemma Reekie wins her heat.

17 year old GB Phoebe Gill qualifies in 3rd place in her heat; a year ago she was a school's runner !

22 year old Favourite GB Keely Hodgkinson wins her heat.
  • Loving the trampolining on the red button. British bloke has done OK, Columbian almost got to the end of his routine and head butted the side covering, and a kiwi has just gone over the side completely.
  • really pleased for Phoebe, that was a really mature run for a 17 year old, held her line at 700m which caused the Italian to have to change line and took her out of it. a lot of athletes would have moved and let her through
  • It’s been a really good day for team GB and hopefully it should be a good evening in the pool and BMX.
  • Swimmers have gone gangster

So Proud of Ben to get a silver in the crazy sprint of the 50 metres freestyle.

I've not seen ANY of our golds live yet, and aren't watching tonight, which should give a decisive boost to our gold medals chances tonight.
  • Leon Marchand dominates the 200m Medley in a new Olympic record but a brilliant silver for Duncan Scott
  • Brilliant swim by Duncan Scott to get the Silver behind the French Super star Leon Marchand who wins his 4th gold in front of his adoring fans.
  • French men dominate the BMX racing with a 1-2-3.
  • Amazing Gold, Silver & Bronze in the Men's BMX for France.
  • Felt like the starter held them longer than usual on that one?
  • Is it like speedway, who goes round the first bend always wins?

  • I thought we’d have a BMX medal but we weren’t there tonight. Shame but I enjoyed the racing.
  • Beth Shriever dominates 6 races and then gets Gazumped in the final and finishes last !
Beth has a great attitude and good to see an athlete not crying and seeing the jeopardy in BMX and knowing the final just didn't go to plan.

I find it a strange format.
The Aussie winner won all her 7 races.
  • Is it like speedway, who goes round the first bend always wins?
If that was the par for speedway, nobody would watch it. Please tape highlights of League and World Cup on I think ITV4 on Monday night. Stupendous competition at 60+ ,mph with no brakes.

    Same here.

She won all her heats. So got 6 points.  Wtf was that all about then ?  I heard afterwards that there were other heats that she didn't take part in (and that the eventual winner (Oz) won), who must presumably have got 6 points as well. No clue why there were 3 heats & then 3 semi finals......that really didn't count for very much in the end. How many competitors were there to start with...50 ????
  • One good thing that came out of today was that I've now got Discovery+. No cost as I've got TNT too (which I was going to cancel last month).

It does mean that I can watch the final round of the golf on Sunday.......now just have to figure out how to sync up my laptop to my tv. (Worse comes to the worse I can just use the HDMI leads like I do for Charlton tv).

I assume you don’t have a modern TV which may have a Discovery+ app?
  • Is it like speedway, who goes round the first bend always wins?
It's not supposed to be. I've seen BMX racing before and it's been really exciting to watch. Someone I follow on social media suggested the course isn't difficult enough for the standard of competition, hence everyone's going over the obstacles easily and trying to take the same line through the course so it's ending up as just whoever gets to the first corner wins unless they crash. Whether that's because the course is badly designed or just that the standard of riding is much higher than it used to be, you'd need to ask someone who knows the intricacies of this version of the sport.

I too was impressed with her attitude. I can see her coming back and winning it at the next Olympics.

I’ve got Discovery+ £30.99 for a month 😳I  think and will cancel at the end of month.
Is that where I can watch the athletics live , got it late last night and every time I clicked on stuff it sent me to Eurosport which I already have 🙄
Bbc didn’t appear to have anything live athletics wise , it’s such a fucking  faff with bbc ,iPlayer,  Eurosport and slow wanky discovery plus app on sky go
it’s getting on my nerves twatting around

edit ; thanks  to those who said what to do earlier
ive not read hardly any of this thread , sorry if I’m repeating guff others have posted

The BBC show the 3 on 3 basketball between France and USA and it was nicely poised with 3 minutes to go. They announce it is on the red button and change channels. They could easily have shown the conclusion and missed out all their adverts and opening credits. The red button is not instant and some people may not have access to it and there wasn't even a mention of it after that. The BBC really are making a mess of this.
