Looks like they're really banking on Wrexham at home to boost club revenue.

We are making out like it's Man United coming to the Valley, it's shite how low we have sunk. Milking a fixture vs Wrexham.
Who cares?  If it brings in money for the club then that can only be a good thing. Its not as if the Valley is full week in week out, is it

Yep, I think it's pretty clear Wrexham are the big boys in this fixture and the club are going to milk it. How far we have fallen. 'Come to watch little ol charlton put the mighty Wrexham to the sword'

Out of interest did Birmingham do the same?

Lol so we had fans complaining a couple of months ago about the fact we don't advertise in local areas enough in things like bus stops etc. to drum up local support for the team...

Now we do and apparently that's also wrong as it's "milking a fixture" (which is literally what advertising is meant to do!) and therefore cringe worthy, embarrassing and tinpot

It's embarrassing. We are acting like a small club that have drawn a big team in an FA cup draw.

You'd rather they didn't advertise and The Valley had about 13k in it?

I didn't say that or suggest it. Whichever way you look at it, Charlton Athletic hyping up a game vs Wrexham is embarrassing.

Treating Goldbridge like the A side, and Wrexham. I want to be proud of Charlton, not embarrassed. These decisions make us look small time.

I don't like the Goldbridge stuff but have no problem with advertising fixtures, if it works we might advertise more which is what matters

Couldn’t care less what fans of other clubs think - if this gets us visibility and awareness elsewhere, I’m all for it. Does not embarrass me.

    Better than being ignored.

Nothing wrong advertising a home game at Train Stations etc provided you do this on a regular basis and it’s not just a one off

If they aren't milking the fixture I trust they have advertised at the stations for Stockport this weekend.

  • The main thing I get from this thread is how easily embarrassed football fans get.

It's not a case of how far we've fallen. Wrexham are a household name because of things outside of football. It would be daft to not take advantage of that when our ground is half empty every home game.
  • This is bigger than Wembley 98 for me.

    10 more sleeps til Wrexham!

I don’t understand all the negative feelings. It’s just a fact that at the moment Wrexham are the biggest draw in league one like it or not it’s just a fact. The club would be absolutely mental to not try to monetise that. It’s a sad indictment of society you could argue that a lot of the people attending are doing so in the hope of seeing their owners rather than the players on the pitch but it is what it is so I hope we get a sell out crowd and make a few quid. You never know some of them might enjoy themselves and come back

You’d also think there’s a good chance of the game being on the doc, ex prem team from London etc. I’d much rather The Valley looks busy and full than sparse on international telly

There's a lot of people who don't appreciate the "interest" around the Wrexham game who have now led to an 11 page discussion on it.
PS we're at home to Stockport on Saturday and yet no one has mentioned that anywhere.
    Strange world we live in.

I am sure that Birmingham will draw bigger home attendances than Wrexham when they travel away.

Mate my comment wasn’t saying who was the bigger club I said biggest draw in terms of bums on seats. We have just played Birmingham at home how many was in the ground? Being generous 14k ? I’m not saying I think it’s a good thing other than extra revenue for the club so I was defending the attempt at marketing that draw.

Not much can be cringier than the "Come and see (enter oppo player here) at the Valley" from the premier days.

We haven't been ripping up trees have we? How long have we been League 1 now?

We are a big team in the league for sure but why shouldn't try make extra money against a team with all the momentum!

I'll be proud of the team that wins and gets promoted. What they do off the pitch is up to them but these particular things are not embarrassing!

I'm more surprised we don't advertise more in the local area about our home fixtures than just this one game against Wrexham?

I am too but thinking about it I’ve never seen an advert for Peterborough or Cambridge games in either city, just doesn’t seem to be something football clubs do very often which seems bizarre
  • We’re a minge of a club and most of my mates know we are so irrelevant that they don’t even bother taking the piss anymore, we’ve sunk without trace
but it’s our lover and with shallow Hal vision we still think we’re not a shithouse but unfortunately that’s exactly what we are

I just hope the home areas aren’t full of day trippers supporting Wrexham. If they are I hope the stewards throw them out.

I hope resources spent on the effort to get an attendance against Wrexham are covered by increased ticket sales and rewarded by bums on seats.
  • I would have thought a good idea would be to have advertising boards at Dartford, Gravesend and Lewisham stations{and others} as a permanent fixture listing forthcoming home games.

Not expecting any piss taking messages from my mates as they are grown men and won't have a clue this is even happening!

They do know we are a shit league one team though and the Palace fans among them fairly regularly take the piss for that.

I really can't see a downside to this.  Maybe we win a few fans, great!  Maybe we don't, so what.
You need to re-evaluate your mates
