Thought we were great yesterday and Bolton were poor aside from Santos who is the Aneke version of a league one defender.
I think Mitchell might be a new favourite. Sit right behind goal and he's proper old school blood and thunder angry centre back. Jones along side him very composed and calm by comparison but equally effective and played with guile
Mannion just looks so calm and relaxed which is opposite to some of the flappy nerve ridden performances others in that position delivered over the years.
We look solid in defence and Ramsay glides past frustrated forwards and midfielders with ease and purpose often diagonally rather than run 20 years up the line, freeze and do a u turn as many a charlton right back has done hitherto.
Small is a great attacking outlet and we have some player there if he stays and develops under Jones.
Berry and Doherty absolutely ran the show and were everywhere winning everything with Coventry mopping up and linking up play.
Campbell doesn't stop running with his electric pace and has gone from a timid nice shy player to exerting physical presence on centre backs that will leave them knowing they've been in a game as they apply their post match TCP.
Ahadme brings a lot too the team and has great positional sense and has been a very good import.
Looking at Godden, Aneke and Kanu warming up with Leaburn still to come back prompted me to comment to my boy how strong in depth our up top options are (relative to prior years)
The boss man himself has delivered with gusto so far and started a season that's dared me to believe he's assembling a squad seriously capable of getting out of this league as long as he remains with us.
Pantomime or not I love his genuine passion and jumping up and down and racing along the touch line with ever passage of play or inevitable poor official decision like Welsh church going Tasmamian devil. Take note messr Appleton.
Building a very strong connection between the fans and a squad of players each of whom put their bodies on the line and give it their all (effectively) in the games I've seen so far.
Brilliant day and even the sun game out as we garnered our second match winning goal.
Great day out, great 3 points, top atmosphere and a top notch bacon sarnie in the Valley Cafe beforehand.
Can't beat a Charlton day on days like yesterday. 👌
Santos is overrated on here. Slow as they come and both his errors led to our goals. That’s the reason he’s still in League 1.
He’s been brilliant against us in recent years but apparently that mistake yesterday is not uncommon for him. Would have been fuming as a Bolton fan seeing him throwing his arms up in the air and shouting at his teammates when the goal was his fault. He was poor.
Reminds me of Titus Brambell the old Ipswich centre back who loved to stroll about, win headers etc. and then make a complete balls up and gift you a goal.Run at Santos and he becomes very ordinary,as Campbell showed. Our defence at the moment looks impregnable, everyone covering making sure no one gets a clear sight of our goal, this is down to Jones, these lads have played only 3 times together but look as if they have been playing together for years.Midfield looks solid, just want to get the strikers firing a bit more and away we go.
I can’t remember the last time I saw a Charlton defence consistently perform this well.
With 4 out of the 6 back line here since January, it's interesting to wonder why the huge change
Simples - fitness.
Not a lot to add to all the comments on the thread, but this is key. Said to my dad and @guinnessaddick during the game that it was good to see an opposition player going down with cramp for the 2nd home game in a row. We‘re pressing teams so high and hard that they’re running themselves ragged trying to find ways round us.
Huge kudos to the coaching team as well as Dr Will Abbott who has definitely had a huge impact since he arrived from Brighton.
I’m just glad I have a couple of weeks til the next home game now. Should be crutch free by then after my recent hip operation and can jump up cheering with a little less trepidation of falling down the stairs in the upper CE 😂
The only goal we have conceded, in the cup, was a wonder shot from way out. We have a great starting point as if you don't concede you don't lose and one goal wins it. Blindingly obvious but no less true for it.
Blindingly obvious to everyone except one.
Yet we are not top & not even in an automatic spot. So please tell me why ? Why are we 3rd if we have scored in every league game AND not let in a goal. Because according to everyone, even Sir Nathan Jones keeping clean sheets wins you titles.
SO. FAR IT DOESNT.
Got to be a wind up surely?
Only you could find a way to moan about 3 wins and 3 clean sheets from 3 games, including 1 over a side expected to contend for automatic promotion.
Once again, I am not moaning.
I am simply stating a fact. People on here keep saying " clean sheets win you titles" and I have pointed out that we've won all our games by keeping a clean sheet. Now, if "clean sheet wins" win you titles then we should be top. But we're not. We aren't even top 2. So, for the last time, there must be something else that is needed to win you automatic promotion than a clean sheet win.
As they say on exam papers, please show your workings out.
If this was halfway through the season then sure, but we're 3 games in, so claiming that we aren't scoring enough goals and clean sheets won't be enough is, quite frankly, meaningless. We're not going to keep 46 clean sheets. We're not going to win every game. The same is also true of the teams above us
For once & for all. I have not said we are not scoring enough goals & that clean sheets will not be enough.
I simply pointed out to all & sundry that just keeping a clean sheet isnt the be & end all of things, and the mantra of "clean sheets win you titles" is not theoretically true.
Now, just to stop all this guff I am not going to reply / defend myself about this any further. You can all think what you like but I know what I mean......and some of it is me being pedantic because of where we stand in the league. I do hope that in 12 games time this conversation will be irrelevant.
I completely get what you’re saying golfie. Look at the top of The Premier League, Scottish PL, The Championship and as far as Stockport are concerned League One. The best teams generally score a lot of goals and the very best teams score a lot and concede few. However. Winning 4 - 0 gets you no more points than winning 1 - 0 and there is more than one way to skin a cat.
The team winning by 4-0 will be higher in the table than the team winning 1-0, so in effect, it is more points. As a bonus, the fans get better entertainment.
I would be happy if we won every game 1-0, definitely promotion, but then I don't pay to watch them 😁
I can’t remember the last time I saw a Charlton defence consistently perform this well.

I was going to say we’ve never been in the same room, but we were in the same car after the MOD 25th Anniversary of the 1998 play-off final night at Brew by Numbers 🤷🏻♂️😉
For once we negated Bolton and forced then into mistakes at the back and defended well with Bolton's 65% Possession not resulting in any decent shots at our goal.
Serious discussion time on this August bank holiday Monday?:
We play at the valley and the away team has a low block and their keeper kicks long every time. The only space for CAFC is out wide but tough for Ramsey and Small getting forward as they are tightly marked and tracked by the oppositions wide forwards players.
I believe this is where we will struggle unless our attacking set pieces improve and the crosses are of the sublime quality of Chuks for Godden's great run and header.
🤔What is the consensus on the teams that do a defensive number on CAFC at the Valley ?
One average game by Santos doesn't dismiss what he is. I would have him over any of our centre backs. He's quicker, stronger and a better passer (usually). He's also more Championship ready than any of our centre backs currently I'd say.
Jones has had a very good start, and has won headers for days, I like Mitchell so far, and I'm still not sure at all about Gillesphey tbh, think he's been massively helped playing in a back 5 so far.
It's all positive, but I'd drop Gillesphey in a heartbeat for Santos, and I imagine Jones would as well if he could, he is right up Jones street in terms of player profile.
A conversation worth having 20 games from now, if there is one.
It's not just one poor game by Santos though, it's one poor game against us after we've already seen him murder us several times and decided he's better than he is, a bit like we did with Scott Fraser. Bolton fans have been thinking he's overrated for a couple of seasons now and they see his tendency to panic and give the ball away more and more frequently going by what they say. Decent in L1 but that's his ceiling, he's not Championship ready and I think that's quite clearly proven by the fact that despite making L1 appearances across 7 seasons no Championship team has ever wanted him. Aside from the fact you'd be mad to play Santos anywhere other than the centre of a 3, Gillesphey has a L1 winner's medal which is more than Santos can say. I definitely wouldn't switch the left footed left-sided CB who has won L1 playing in that position and hasn't conceded a league goal yet in this set-up for him. Santos is still a good player mind, but I wouldn't be falling over myself to get a 29 year old centre back who is a career third division player, certainly not over Jones or Mitchell either.
Again though accolades can always be a bit skewed. Plenty of average players have Premier league winners medals as they've been part of a good squad, then you have players like Gerrard, Kane, Son etc who were/are undoubtedly good enough to win one, just not in the right environment.
From what I've read from Bolton fans, they may be worse than us for negativity. They've taken 4 points from 9 and some of them already think their season is practically over.
He also has had championship interest before but signed a longer contract from Bolton. We won't know the ins and outs, but like I said, just cause a player isn't playing at a level, doesn't mean he can't.
Lyle Taylor was championship quality a season or two before he even joined us, once we went up he had interest from Brentford, Leeds, Forest etc before he had even kicked a ball up there.

Santos I’m sure would look a different player in our team where he wouldn’t have to play out from the back.
We also don’t know if Bolton have rejected offers for him and what they’re paying him vs what clubs higher up who’d be interested can offer him.
Saying that he’s 30 next year, so if he’s going to make it at that level it’ll need to happen sooner than later.

The hypothetical game will be a stinker but a team who tries to just defend their way through an afternoon is going to have their work cut out to make it work. Percentage play and the press will be coming at them a lot, and they won't get much relief by hoofing it long as that suits us nicely.
It can be done but not easily and then you think of having the experience of Godden and the power of Aneke to bring on... if we only need one goal then I'd be confident of getting it.

Feedback is buy yourself a hair band for that Barnet!! Would drive me made keep having to push it back.
Cheers Gary!
Yeah it's a nightmare atm, when it's long I can do more with it but it's at that awkward stage atm. When it's long I get an undercut or pin it back so it looks something like this:
In regards to hair bands, I usually wear one, but this one time at work I was standing on the street wearing one, and some young lad walked past me and said 'oi oi Jack Grealish' and I heard his other mate mutter 'yeah but a lot bigger'. The rest is history 😂

First game of the season for me, and it was like night and day compared to last season. We surpassed my expectation and I never felt as though we were ever really troubled by Bolton. It feels like we're on to something special this season.
On a side note, Berry really impressed me; I think he will become a fan favourite. He looks too good for League One.

(I picked the toughest looking Red Robin from Google images)
