Couldn't watch it of course due to the world-class fuckwits at the FA, but that Tweet of the Gas goal courtesy of @Bedsaddick has made my evening. Like most people on here, I'd given up on any idea that he had a goal like that in his locker, and I duly apologise, Gas. To produce it in those circs, and in front of your own fans packed behind the goal, whom you save from the indignity of a penalty shootout with an NL side, I imagine you're feeling a bit good tonight.
Well we all know strikers need goals, and that's a great goal to build on. But I'm also wondering about his injury, and whether in fact it was something he arrived with? As I recall he was signed with an injury, which may have been different but as we know if we spend 10 minutes talking to a physio, it's all related. Anyway, if he kicks on from this, that could be a game-changer.
Think the injury he came with was knee related and this recent absence has been chest related which is part of why we’ve been very cautious bringing him back
Yes I understood they were different and this was an "unusual" one, but it also sounded like they didn't know where it came from. Maybe one to ask Dr Will about at the CAST AGM.

He got hit very hard with a ball in the chest I think. Potential you’re getting confused with Lloyd Jones who felt something, got scanned and then they found a mysterious stress fracture?
What I recall when we learned about the Aneke and Jones injuries after the break, how the official site made of point of playing them down. This always ends badly from my experience.
Just watched highlights and my conclusion is that our defence is fecking clueless.
Our midfield is non f*******g existent more like!
Bullied about again by a bunch of part timers this time. And when you look to the bench it's much of the same. How did Jones get this paramount part of the jigsaw so wrong??
We made hard work of that. Watching it, it was like we were the National League team and they were league one. They moved it around pretty nicely but we, in general, could barely string 2 or 3 passes together unless it was across the back. We were lucky that their defence was pretty weak Otherwise we would have lost that for sure. We weren’t good for large periods of that game. That’s a worry. We just seem to lack any flair.
Game changing sub from Jones ..he deserves a lot of credit
This is a joke, yeah? Only people are liking the comment, so now I'm now sure ....
Yes off course it's a joke ..how the fcuk would I know ? I followed the game on here 😉...he made 2 substitutions when we were 3 -2 up that may have let Southend back in the game but I couldn't see ( like most people) ..what does p iss me off though is the pile on mentality of when we concede or dt play well and out come the knives for mannion, any right back apart from ramsay,Gillesphey,Ahadme, all of our midfield ,chuks and the manager. I just hope for their sake they dt read half of the shite on here
Not sure I can take much more of Conor Coventry. Our defender picks up the ball. Coventry in acres of space, looks up to the forward line and sees the normal long launch forward is not on. Coventry frantically waves at the defender to pass it back to the goalkeeper. No attempt whatsoever to go and pick the ball up from the defender and launch an attack himself. Maybe start a passage of play? This is not the first time I've seen him do it and to do it today against a lower level opposition is pretty pitiful.
We saw last night with Huddersfield and Tamworth that these games aren't easy. Not sure why Northampton at home to Kettering is a better tie than this one was to put on tv. Surely you have to look at the lower league side playing at home.
Why? They did their research and realized a local derby not played in earnest for 35 years, between rivals separated by several divisions, made for a good atmosphere being a sell out, and with Kettering going well in their league, the ingredients for a potential upset, which they got. Good choice
Was at game today - what a dump Roots Hall is, worse than my last visit early 1990’s - they had plenty of melts (no doubt not regular SUFC attendees) in the stand to our right - utter helmets - we started well, at at 2-0 we were cruising - why on earth Godden felt the need to leather the ball when he hit the bar, he could have simply stroked it into the net - if we had gone 3-0 then, the game is done and dusted - but no, this is Charlton 🙄
We let them play, and by virtue of that it became a Natl Lge match - hoof ball blah blah
Great to win at the death, but fuck me that was a tough watch
Hmm not in my location they're not. Where am I Papua New Guinea ? Timbuktu ? No exotic Greenwich & I can't watch the BBC highlights
You sure you've not left your VPN on Bob?
Thanks ali but as an old technophobe I'm not even sure what that means but I've made no alterations to settings on thee old computer. I just get the message "fuck off you old git not available in your location"
Nearly home and a most enjoyable day out. We got up to Southend quite early and, after a walk along the seafront and through Adventure Island, we landed in The Olde Trout for a couple of pints and then went on to a very nice micro pub, the West Road Tap. We had a natter with some devout Southend supporters - who go away Northern outposts like Rochdale and Fylde - and eventually found the right way into the away end.
A fairly quiet opening was enlivened by Leaburn’s excellent headed goal and Zach Mitchell’s second put us well in control. With Southend’s terrible first half shooting - their speciality seemed to be lashing the ball 20 foot over the bar - I couldn’t see them getting back into the game. I feared that Godden’s very poor miss might come back to haunt us and a very harsh penalty put Southend back in a game they should have been out of at half time.
The home side were always going to come out and give it a real go and they were the better team in the second half, demonstrating an ability to pass the ball to each other and attack us down the flanks - something we clearly lacked. That was particularly so down the right, where young Zack Mitchell (who did well) got scant support in the face of regular overloads. So much for Nathan’s narrow ‘box midfield’. All I could see was Allan Campbell jogging around aimlessly as Southend players ran past him. Sure enough, the equaliser came.
A great header down from Leaburn for Godden looked to have clinched the win for us but a chaotic scramble in the last minute or two resulted in an equaliser and the first extra time I can remember off hand since Donny the play-offs.
Extra time was a tamer affair as both teams tired, although Southend continued to look dangerous at times until Ahadme’s fine finish settled matters after a poor defensive header left him confronting the goalie on the left of the goal - a calm swivel and a composed finish settled the tie. Not a matter of hindsight but why Jones introduced Hylton - not tall and lacking in pace - in place of Ahadme, only he will know.
It was hardly a defensive masterclass from either team, although Southend at least have the excuse of being National League team.
As to the game overall, we looked very shaky at the back and the narrow midfield formation left us vulnerable down the flanks and reliant on big punts forward to try and get up the field. It was neither effective nor great to watch. At times, I’m afraid that we looked more non-league than Southend.
For me, Leaburn was by far our most effective player, with a goal and an assist and we would probably not have taken this game to extra time without him. I confess I feared the worst once he was replaced and our 68 year combined strike force took up the offensive mantle. The lack of pace and height made me feel that this game was likely to go to the lottery of penalties, assuming we could avoid another bungle at the back.
The lack of width in this team is striking. Tyreece Campbell must presumably have got a knock in training and I would have liked to have seen Jones take a chance by introducing Dixon to attack the opposition. What was Allan Campbell contributing ? A shout out to Thierry Small who demonstrated some proper attacking intent. As to the midfield, that continues to be a bit of a mess, although at least Terry Taylor’s set plays offer us more opportunities.
Ultimately, we’re in the hat for Monday, but as well as needing our best defenders, Lloyd Jones and Kayne Ramsey back from injury, we need to sort out the conundrum that is Charlton’s midfield. The manager also needs to decide whether he is prepared to chance putting some width into the side in order to offer a greater threat than the current approach of percentage football with high punts forward. That will not ultimately prevail in this - or any other - division.
A good day out, which started very pleasantly drinking with Chippy in the Trout. Cheers mate.
Despite the win, for the most part we just weren't good enough. The difference between the two sides was that we took our chances better. They created more than us though, so I don't think we should take too much comfort from the fact they scored from a couple of deflections. The bottom line is that we gave them them too much space and too many opportunities. Still, it's nice to be through to the second round. Here's hoping we can get through that to the big rounds.
I've watched that and then am commenting straight away without reading others' posts....
... listening to NJ, I am heartened by the fact that - as in previous weeks - he really goes in strong on the fact that the team aren't performing to the standards he expects
I've read a fair few people on here saying that we arent good enough and that he is the wrong manager for us and/or he isn't doing a good job. Hopefully, those people see value in the fact that he isn't trying to make excuses or sugar coat. He knows it isn't good enough. Given time and support, I think he'll get us to the levels we aspire to.
Left at 9.30 this morning and arrived in Southend in time to go walk up the pier, look at the RNLI lifeboats, and go to the pier museum - which was excellent - before the football. Roots Hall, just as I remembered it, a proper football ground, love it. They are a decent club and I am glad they seem to have some stability and wish them luck. The game itself was dreadful. We just didn't turn up. The defense was woeful, the midfield was out muscled. One team played long ball, non league tactics with little quality on show; the other tried to make chances through some wing play and crossing. If Southend had any competent forward players they could have been out of sight. Thank goodness the winner meant I could leave and not waste more of the day watching them. Berry should have been hooked earlier and had a mo ths wages deducted such was his pathetic attitude and lack of any effort. Then it was down to Adventure Island, fun fair rides and fireworks. The kids had a great day out and so did I with them. The footy we played was the only bad bit, and boy was it bad

Taylor throws his arm up behind him, and in a very unnatural position as it blocks the ball.

Ramsay - A. Mitchell - Jones - Edwards.
