C'mon Golfie, don't be so negative mate...
Apart from Stockport, which we know was a disaster, the other two draws, away at Barnsley and Wrexham at home were ok, the other two wins...we can only play those in front of us...lifes not quite a bowl of cherries, but not as bleak as you paint it...and come this Saturday, a chance to get back to winning ways at Exeter...

    We won...

How would we feel if we were Northampton fans?

Playing at home, against local rivals, who are 4 leagues below them...

    And lose!
They must be wandering around "all Charlton like" this morning.
  • Why is there any debate about the penalty it was the most stonewall penalty you could ever see

As my old man used to say he had the lace out of it
Cracking quote by your Dad - I’m gonna log that in the memory bank and use it myself 😃
  • Only seen brief highlights but penalty incident was shown I think 3 times. I think most fair supporters would say it was a penalty. If at the other end we would be incensed if not given ! We still look lightweight and although they scored with deflected goals our defence looked weak. Impossible to think we could be Top 6 by end season and worryingly even if promoted we would be soon back down. The thought of Millwall thrashing us is too much to bear thinking about.

Just watched the highlights, I thought the penalty decision was fine.

Taylor throws his arm up behind him, and in a very unnatural position as it blocks the ball.
Well I agree he’s got good vision,  but he’s literally got his back to the ball, how did he know to put that arm up?
Because if you stick your arm out behind you, you stand a fair chance of blocking the cross. It’s definitely intentional handball. Nobody needs to stick an arm out backwards like that; he’s not using it like that  to keep his balance.
"DEFINITELY intentional handball"? You know what he was thinking at the time? Have a guess what I'm thinking now.

Anyway, "intentional" doesnt come into the equation these days.
At first, I thought the penalty decision was a joke, but having watched it a few more times on replay I think the referee got it right.
Similar view initially as I was at the game and I was directly in line with Taylor and thought it hit his hip.

Seeing it this morning I thought it was slightly harsh but would want it the other way round. The game changer was goddens miss and this on the stroke of HT.

  • I wasn’t at the game so can’t comment on the performance but the objective is surely going through to the next round and we’ve done that. I watched Real Birmingham today at Sutton Utd and they did the bare minimum to win, Stansfield didn’t look like a 10m plus footballer either. But they too went through. I was at Northwich when we got knocked out by a non league team, now that was a poor performance. Barcelona, sorry mighty Wrexham, currently losing at Harrogate. They might go out. We are through. Rejoice in a possible cup run. And at least NJ took it seriously putting out a strong team. I wouldn’t have bothered to go if at The Valley as normally it’s stiffs and kids and we get turned over. Remember the debacle against CVPM? Cup shocks happen, thankfully not yesterday.
Clearly the bare minimum objective was to get through to the next round. But the performance fit a pattern we’ve seen in league matches recently of us being fairly ineffective in the middle and leaking goals. Just because we’ve had atrocious results in the cup before we shouldn’t let that become the benchmark, ultimately our best team should be making fairly easy work of a non-league side.
  • Watching the egg chasing now instead.
    Even lose that.

Expect to lose the cricket as well

Expect a hat trick of disappointments.
If you look for negativity and disappointment you'll always find it.
If you look for positivity and happiness ........

  • Who else left after Southend's third thinking at least we'd secured a replay? Bloke called in to LBC last night saying he did. Think the co-commentator on BBC radio at the time also said our end was noticably emptier just before extra time.

I almost left.  I knew there was extra time but felt that Adventure Island would be better than extra time.  I did stay in the end though.

There seems to be a lot of huffing and puffing on here over your performance, and to be fair we do it as well, but the bottom line is you are in the hat for the 2nd round draw. I would have been quite happy to play like total tossers and still win to get to that point. Fact, you didn't play like total tossers, but you did allow us play to the top of our current abilities. So get excited for the draw tomorrow, I wish it was us you lucky gits. Good luck.
Well said mate. Although we were bad you lot looked much better than your current position. Good luck for the rest of the season

He called in to tell people he didn't understand that there are no replays in this year's FA Cup, from R1 onwards?
Indirectly, yes. It was in the preamble to his main point which was about the US elections when discussing what sort of day he'd had. He was happy charlton had got through but annoyed with himself for leaving before extra time, not being aware that extra time was part of the fixture.

I've watched that and then am commenting straight away without reading others' posts....

... listening to NJ, I  am heartened by the fact that - as in previous weeks - he really goes in strong on the fact that the team aren't performing to the standards he expects

I've read a fair few people on here saying that we arent good enough and that he is the wrong manager for us and/or he isn't doing a good job. Hopefully, those people see value in the fact that he isn't trying to make excuses or sugar coat. He knows it isn't good enough. Given time and support, I think he'll get us to the levels we aspire to.
Instead of continually talking about how the standards aren't up to what he expects why doesn't he do something about it?
I think the reason for his angst is that he signed players like Docherty, Berry and even Godden* probably quite rightly expecting them to be a good fit - I don’t think there were many complaints from us when he signed them - but they haven’t lived up to his, or our, expectations. I think he feels let down.
(*Godden is at least getting on the scoresheet.)

Jones spent all of August raving about what a ‘magnificent window’ we have had.

These are very much his players
Was that the little used fourth window in Play School?
  • peterreeves said:To me its a clear sign following several NJ match interviews to the owners that you can't get out of this league without spending some serious money so the next window will be interesting.
I wouldn’t hold my breath on that

To be fair there wasn’t many on here saying it was a bad window at the time. It seems that the players that we have signed from leagues above us are not performing as hoped atm
No one (fan wise) really knows how good the players will be and to write them off before a ball is kicked would be crazy
  • Saying he had a magnificent window doesn’t equate to having a magnifient squad. If you are arguing Jones has been empowered to deliver a League 1 promotion, he hasn’t. Certainly not this season.

I could go into « patronising* » extensive detail but my words are not welcome here.

    *It’s called analysis.

As for this weekend we have seen across the 1st Round, and our own history it is the FA Cup. All cliches apply…. Northwich Victoria, CVPM  etc., etc. On any given day.

Did I just watch Birmingham sleepwalk through the 1st round against a passionless Sutton? Did not Tamworth school L1 Huddersfield in game management? Steve Evans would have been orgasmic. Did Parkinson not just say Wrexham did not perform?

All due credit to Southend. On the day they posed questions we should but didn’t answer.

I get the lower paragraphs … but generally the statements are we have the 4th - 6th highest budget in the league, And Jones promising after our rampant 1 nil win at Wigan on the first day about how far we can go…

I think the plan of both him and board was that the squad should be very much in the promotion mix so I really cannot accept this line that we should all be satisfied with mid table stability this season, and the heady heights of betterment of last season, the worst season in the club’s history
