Generally speaking, as you move up the leagues you get more time on the ball, but teams are better organised, players are more positionally aware, so it's more difficult to use that time effectively as you're options are taken away.
That's why players with vision become more valuable the higher the level, they are the ones who can thread the needle and unlock the opponents.
The more a team fears you or respects your players and playstyle, the less they recklessly press as they know it's a lost cause which could create space & holes.
The better your players are with the ball, the more aware the opposition become, that's where the time comes from. Unfortunately we don't have anyone like that at the club, but hopefully as we grow we will start recruiting the kind.
Closest we have is Conor, but he isn't going to open teams up with a pass. Some of our other passers are gonna open a lot of chances for other teams imo, and it's something we may need to get used to for a bit while we adjust.
Think Taylor style of play may be more suited to the championship having a little more time on the ball then league one … saying that I don’t expect him to stay once fit ..
What are talking about more time on the ball. The championship you have even less time on the ball the pressing from teams is relentless. Everything needs to be a couple of seconds quicker to survive in this league
I hate to say it but RM is correct. There will be more time on the ball in The Championship but it's what we do with it that counts. I also thing Terry Taylor hasn't been given a chance under Jones and when he was he performed pretty well but that was League one.
I suspect that there are players in the Champ who look like they have more time on the ball simply because they are better players. It is a mark of better players in whatever position that they look like they have more time than others. Whether any of our midfielders have that quality is another matter. I have not seen it yet.

Do players with vision become more valuable? Jones hates pure technical footballers more than any other manager in the EFL yet he managed to take Luton to a playoff campaign and built the side that got them promoted to the prem. There is no such thing as the right type of footballers at any level all comes down to managers style system and knowing how to beat the specific opposition they’re playing.
Maybe it depends where you are on the field or who you are playing because some games we will struggle to get 35% unless our new players are better at ball retention because we will get hurt at this higher level and knackered if we are chasing the ball for most of the 100 minutes or say 65% of the time. Even with 16 players being used over the duration.
CAFC are stepping up a division and we have to be better on the ball.
He came in for Coventry, when Conor was suspended, and performed adequately. Nothing spectacular, but adequately...
When Coventry was brought back, Jones tried to play them in tandem. It was a disaster. So much so, that many on here were claiming that Jones should be sacked after the Crawley game. Which was, every one seems to be forgetting, the last time Taylor wore a Charlton Shirt.
I get we need cover for Coventry. But we should, and I hope will, be looking at better than Taylor...
Getting more time on the ball as you move up used to be something people said back in the day, and there was probably some truth to it, because teams didn’t press uniformly from the front. So, any player attempting a one-man press would be easily bypassed by the better players.
These days, you have fitter players, better coaches, and more organised teams. Our defenders are going to be under pressure as soon as we play that ball out.
I don’t think any of these signings are significantly raising the level. I think Jones’ tactics might be just enough to scrape by, but it’s going to be hard to watch.

I agree with this - the notion that you have more time on the ball the higher up the leagues you go is a myth - the pace, physicality, skill level - in fact, everything - increases as u go up the leagues - same in any division or league regardless guy through the pyramid and no exception in pro football
Whatever league you are in, If it looks like players have more time on the ball, it's all down to skill level and knowing where to find that time, The Championship will show up anyone failing in these skills big time...🤷♂️
TT's passing is arguably a lot better and more probing than Coventry's, but I don't think NJ wants a deep-lying playmaker in that role because we don't play through the lines.
He came in for Coventry, when Conor was suspended, and performed adequately.
You have answered the question yourself. He deputised for Coventry adequately. That is as much as we can reasonably expect from a reserve player. If they came in and consistently did better than that then they would not be content to be stuck on the bench for long, and we would have to look for someone else as good.
At 24, he should be getting better. Whether his injuries have stymied his progression remains to be seen.
The biggest advantage Taylor has is that he is already our player and is known to be of excellent character. Northampton thought the world of him. Were he not already ours, we would not think of acquiring him. But he is, and that counts for a lot.

I remember Jimmy Bullard talking about this on his podcast, the "you get more time on the ball" comment was banded about for years and his team-mates in the lower leagues said it all the time.
I believe his words were along the lines of "I heard this all the time and when I got to the Premier League, I had Steven Gerrard and Crespo trying to break my legs".

Sorry but disagree with this.
You won't get more time on the ball, the game will be quicker, the press will be be more intense, it may look like more time as the better players are more technical and the first touch rather than two to control the ball buys the time.
As you go up the leagues it's less technical and more the physical attributes and most importantly the ability to play under pressure and make the right decisions under that pressure.
I never once stepped up a level and had more time, you just adapt or you don't.
Taylor won't play under Jones consistently because he doesn't have the legs to consistently press at this level.
Dont want to waste Apter there, even if he played there a few times for Blackpool. He will be needed further forward.
You are going to be disappointed then because that's exactly where he will play and has done in all the friendlies. I would't worry about his defensive duties too much as Ramsay will cover him . He will predominantly be an attacking wing back.
Dont want to waste Apter there, even if he played there a few times for Blackpool. He will be needed further forward.
Our RWB was barely a defender last season. Small pushed so high up they just drop into a back 4 with Ramsey doing the job of a RB. Think it could work really well as Apter appears to have much better end product than Small did.
I’m finding it surprising the number of people who still haven’t realised Apter is our first choice RWB for the next 46 league games
Same, you don’t spend that amount of money on someone and 1) have them not start the majority of games and 2) play them in a different position in pre season to in competitive games

Unless they're exceptional, I think the days of purely technical, "visionary" players is gone. What I mean more is that every player at this level needs a minimum level of vision just to play the game and the higher the level, the more important this becomes. So you have two centre back, equally as quick, equally as strong, equally as good in the tackle. The one who can see the pass into a midfielder, and equally can see the vulnerable channel an opponent could exploit, is the one who will make it at a higher level.
So I'm not talking about a Jan Molby style visionary, I'm talking about every player having that skill in their arsenal to a higher level. Whilst Jones may not want what some would deem a luxury player, he'll want all his players to have the requisite vision.

Yea all a bit odd this isn't it. He's literally been brought in to play there yet people think he's going to suddenly be playing up front?
I think some people think it might not work - that he won’t get the ball high enough up the pitch to effect the game and he will spend all his time defending in that position, in which case he might be better in a position with less responsibility defensively .
Lazy research from me, but has Apter ever played RWB for Blackpool?
Not much, maximum of about 2 games. But Blackpool played with a system closer to a 442 last season so he was playing further back than most modern wingers. His heatmap is very similar to Small’s from memory. I can see why NJ wanted him for that position

We play wingbacks a 10 and 2 strikers.
He's not a 10 and he's not a striker.
