Barnsley Athletic and Charlton remain in negotiations over Chris O'Grady but are no nearer reaching an agreement for the striker.

The Addicks last week had a bid in the region of £500,000 accepted but Press Association Sport understands coming to a compromise over the structure of the deal is proving problematic. The Sky Bet Championship club have also yet to agree personal terms with the player.

Talks are continuing between all parties but O'Grady's proposed switch the The Valley hangs in the balance.

Charlton, who unlike Barnsley narrowly avoided relegation last season, face competition from other Championship clubs to sign the 28-year-old.

O'Grady was the Tykes' top scorer during the 2013/14 campaign with 15 goals and the Addicks' London rivals Millwall are known to be monitoring developments.

"Hopefully things will get resolved but where we're at is a fee, which is close to what has been reported, has been agreed and dialogue remains ongoing," the player's representative told Press Association Sport.

"One club has laid out a set way of how they want things done but at the moment they aren't even close. I'd say, as things stand, it was 50/50 as to whether it will happen.

"Clubs have made offers which have not been accepted so, yes, there is plenty of interest in Chris and he wants to stay at that level (in the Championship)."

O'Grady is half way through a two-year contract at Barnsley having joined the Tykes from South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday last summer following a loan spell at Oakwell.

Certainly explains why it's dragging out. Will be very pissed off if Millwall nip in and sign him.

Diverting attention away from the Dyer story....

I still hope we get him as he would be a very good addition for our level.
  • Don't worry guys, word on the street is that we have been linked with 31 year-old Cameroonian Tennyson Sonkey. Last season he set the Belgian division 3B ablaze with a credible 9 goals for Royal Charleroi Fleurus.

I can't wait to see this guy in action!

And some of you can take the P about our new potential investment lol.

COG is an average player, believe me don't lose any sleep if you miss out.

Presumably this is just the Financial Fair Play Regulations meaning that we can't offer O'Grady the same money that other clubs can, not to mention Duchatelet nobly standing up to yet another mercenary footballer, as he has already done so effectively with Dorian Dervite and Ben Hamer.

    Getting (even more) embarrassing now.

He needs more money or a longer contract to convince him to come south.

No need for that sort of sarcasm. He scored 3 in 2011/12, 7 in 2012/13 and 9 last season, so he's improving year on year. If he carries on at that rate we'll have a guaranteed 20-goal a season striker by the time he's 37. Sign him up!

    haha embarrassing for who???

What would be embarrassing is if Chris O'Grady and his agent were taking the piss out of us with big wage demands and we went ahead and immediately met them. If he knows several clubs are after him then his agent is more than likely playing hard ball.

Could you imagine the out cry on here if it was revealed that COG was our top earner???

Thing is,as Piggy says, if he was shot hit, then no doubt someone else would have snapped him up by now - we're only prepared to bid either for unknown Belgies or the dregs of the Championship - and they want me to sign up for a season ticket !

Has whoever in charge thought that targeting players currently living down south might be a better idea than trying to target players that are already well settled up north?

Mixed feelings on this. Clearly we want/need new blood. I am confident that we'll have offered a salary that most of us here would be overjoyed to earn.

RD is clearly not prepared to pay silly money, esp given FFP and our ongoing losses. Trouble is, he is in a minority in that respect. All very well waiting for sanity to prevail, but meanwhile our players targets move on.

Championship getting more like the Prem in that big-spending clubs are in another league in terms of transfers - hugely frustrating and worrying

    It's a contra deal.

We get O'Grady's feet, Mackail-smiths hair and Tomlins beer gut!

I think we're missing a piece of the puzzle with the theories. It says that a bid was accepted, but that the structure of that amount is being problematic. Or in other words, we want to pay installments and Barnsley wany the cash up front. Perhaps?

The personal terms is another issue entirely.

Can't help but feel that the club shoul be pulling off all the stops to get him. Especially because of his form last year and because the fans are getting more and more irate and wanting a sign of improvement.

This isn't the first time we've heard stories of him not paying players desired wages.

I'm usually sticking up for RD but if we don't get him then i'll be pissed off big time.

Well I'd say it's getting embarrassing for Duchatelet. Virtually everyone who has left the club since he arrived has had something negative to say about him, he has far failed to bring in a single player whose been better than the one they replaced, most of the players he's bought in have been of laughable quality and this appears to be the second occasion (after Max Gradel) when rumours have been circulated that we're in for a half decent player and the second occasion when it seems that there's absolutely no danger of us signing him. Incidentally I notice that we don't seem to be following up our alleged interest in Gradel now the window's open again. I'd say all of that is pretty embarrassing.

Obviously Duchatelet won't be embarrassed, because he clearly doesn't give a monkeys about Charlton.

But he has fixed the pitch, so everything's just great.

Barnsley will be happy with any deal to off load COG imo, I think the problem is with the players demands and if he is messing you lot about then believe me when I say this I'd just pull the plug on him, he's not worth all the aggro.

Players won't come for a pittance, and it's exactly the same when offering new contracts.

Roland playing silly buggars again or players getting too greedy?

Exactly. We have, from the piece, not even talked terms with COG or his agent yet. It is about how we stagger the payments, not the amount, or the salary.

It's tough. RD has a real top quality striker on the books at SL in Batshuayi. Valued at @ £8 million. Perhaps Duchatelet is reluctant to spend similar amounts on wages to O'Grady when compared to Batshuayi. I'm have no idea the relative amounts but I bet they are not too far apart. British players cost and demand too much. That's the problem.

There won't be any for at least another 8 weeks yet :-0
  • It's looking like the same problem again, our owner is doing the right thing by trying to pay a player what he is actually worth, rather then the inflated wages some clubs will throw at players in a desperate bid to get on the Premier League merry go round but that being said, it is gonna be no fun at the start of the season being one of the few decent clubs compared to the rest, if we miss out on all our main targets because we make a stand.
