In answer to the question regarding what would the 120 or so horses have been doing if they weren't racing at Cheltenham today is that most likely they wouldn't exist.
As I understand it horses are very selectively bred, and artificial insemination and what not goes on, maybe some variation of cloning happens as well in order to breed winning animals.
If the races didn't happen they probably wouldn't be bred.1 -

The answer, of course, is that the race horse - and any animal farmed for food, or kept in a laboratory - would not be in this world. Given the danger that they face and the abuse meted out to so many of them, that would probably be a blessing.
That the race horse is at Cheltenham at all is because that's where the money and the publicity is. The race-goers, like the jockeys, owners, trainers and visiting public, choose to be there. Choice is not something afforded to the race horse, any more than it is to the fattened farmed animal, or the unfortunate incarcerated creature being cut, poisoned and frightened in some underground bunker.
As you are aware, race horses are selectively bred to run and to make money. I do understand that most race horses are well cared for. (They're an asset, so hold a value). Transported about from race to race, the race horse is at the whim of its owner, trainer, stable hand or jockey.
Farmed Turkeys are bred to become large. Cows are bred to produce an unnaturally high yield of milk - (destined not for their babies, but for humans to take, thus denying the baby its sustenance).
That all the above, and more, exist at all is down to man's intervention, the main driver being the making of money. Thus the animal, with little or no choice in the matter, becomes subservient, a commodity, a unit, exploited.
Some call it bullying and we shall oppose it.

On the basis that they don't make money, no, I don't. Unless it's a 'Look at me' show like Crufts, where selective breeding is a bedrock. Crufts has been forced by protests to tone down its more abusive elements. As has horse racing re. use of the whip, and reduction in the height of fences.
None of which would have happened voluntarily, of course. But we don't give up easily.2 -
