You're delegating now - a very impressive rise to the top!

Delegation - the art of not putting off until tomorrow what you can get somebody else to do today!

He's shown promise, but we're yet to sort out the problem of the full site not being available on mobiles. He was looking into this a few weeks back and still unresolved.....it's a big test for him ;-)

  • Re the fuel allowance. The neighbours behind me are both in receipt of this allowance and every year they contact the local authority to say they dont need it as they are comfortably off. They get told they must have it otherwise the money is lost. Instead they give it to a local charity.

I'm not sure this is right. The winter fuel payment comes direct from the DWP, not the local authority.
The Govt's web site says "you usually get a Winter Fuel Payment automatically if you’re eligible and you get the State Pension." It also says "write to the office that pays your Winter Fuel Payment if you want to cancel it." So their story seems a little odd.

I have no idea whether what was said was correct but I once watched a representative of Age UK being interviewed on this topic and he said that it would actually cost more to "means test" payments than to just pay it out universally.

Damian Green already dropping the "coalition of chaos" and "strong and stable" government line on QT.
  • I have no idea who Damian green is. Just off to check if I should know.
  • Oh, work and pensions secretary.

Took the words out of my mouth
  • That is my constituency. Matthew Pennycook is the standing MP. I voted for him in 2015 as I have voted Labour all my life. I sent him an e.mail before the Article 50 vote in the House of Commons asking him to assure me he was going to represent the contituency in that vote by voting against. The constituency voted overwhelmingly, something like 70%, to Remain, in the referendum. In response I received a stock response, obviously written by Labour head office, detailing why he was voting for article 50. All the Labour MPs in neighbouring constituencies, which also voted overwhelmingly to Remain, voted against article 50. So, to sum up, he is a useless piece of shit. Looks like I will still have to vote for him though because I don't see anyone else likely to prevent the Tory from getting elected.

I am really looking forward to see how Kate Hoey gets on in Vauxhall. I would dearly love to see her lose her seat.

As a floating voter I can't understand why someone would slavishly follow one party (whichever one) when it's direction changes depending on its leadership.

Also my own views have changed over the years I assume most people will vary views depending on life experiences as time goes by?

I think I've read every post in this thread...and not one of them has said anything approaching what you're suggesting. You could always try arguing your case sensibly rather than just making silly comments?

And now I'm annoyed at myself for rising to your bait.

Not in cash terms it's not and even reports in the Telegraph are on the pessimistic side.

    telegraph.co.uk/business/2017/04/25/uks-deficit-slashed-level-last-seen-financial-crisis/

I'm not celebrating that 7 years of austerity has managed to get us back to a point we were at 10 years ago quite yet.
You make a very valid point. Politicians will use the yardstick that gives out the message they want. If my credit card debt goes up do I say it's gone down because my salary went up. No, I would say my cash borrowings have increased but affordability is OK because my salary increase covers the repayments.

If supermarket prices go up and I buy less with my shopping budget, does it make sense to say my spending has been cut when in fact I have simply been able to buy less.

Sounds gobbledegook, but it’s how a rise is manipulated to be called a fall and a fall is manipulated to be called a rise.

So you are right, looking at cash, our deficit has not gone down, and has in fact increased in real terms if you take account of inflation.

So if we cut the gobbledegook and talk about cash, we can see that spending on the NHS in 2005/06 was £76.4bn, and by 2017 it’s risen to £135bn. So we can agree thanks to @Bournemouth Addick exposure of fake news how figures are manipulated and that in fact the national debt has gone up and NHS spending has nearly doubled. In reality we have borrowed more cash and spent more cash. If government's borrowed more cash and government's spent less cash we need to find out who's knicking the money.

Talk of a fall in national debt is the same bollocks as the talk of a cut in NHS spending, it ensures the truth that exposes the root of the problem can't get in the way of the politics.

Definitely signs that people are reacting to a government that is failing catastrophically in almost every area of policy...

So much so that the average of all current polls has increased their lead by 7.7% since when they began their stint in office.

In all seriousness though, I know recent polls have shown a slight decrease in their rating, it doesn't strike me as a particularly accurate claim when it's said that "people are reacting" to their failings.

By all accounts, they're still doing a lot better than they should be!

Edit: Apparently I was wrong, this rolling average (so will lessen the effect of individual polls, albeit will potentially be slightly delayed upon a change in trend) suggests there's no such decrease:

Sod it, nope - I was right.

All very interesting at the moment, but very much expected to be fair.

Up until the snap election it was clear that Labour were clueless and there was no real urgency to stop that. It stands to reason that after the announcement they would have to organise themselves and perhaps try and look a bit more organised and viable.
