Smells Like Teen Spirit is a pretty killer opening to Nevermind. Sets the tone, draws you in, and still sounds incredibly unique 20+ years and 1,000,000+ imitators later.
Nirvana's debut album was Bleach in 1989 on indie label Sub Pop.
Nevermind was their first album for the 'major' Geffen organisation in 1991.  The allegedly vast signing on fee alienated the group from some noisy jealous twonks who like to prattle about artistic integrity but some 50 million (and counting) album sales later Geffen's ROI must have been substantial, to say nothing of Cobain's writing royalties.

Debut album? Only if you squint - first full length LP maybe
Undeniably exciting record and a terrific opener
Well, the thread title does stipulate album...and `Live Like A Suicide' was an EP of course, but you obviously know that.
