Jonny Williams - now at Gillingham (p47)

I would like a midfielder who can score a goal. Williams spends a lot of time injured and when he is playing he is constantly hitting the deck. I am surprised that he has resigned for us but I can't get excited by it.

JW is not and has never pretended to be a goalscoring midfielder. What he is, is a creative, hard-working player that scares defences and wins numerous free-kicks in attacking positions (most fouled player in the Championship last season).
Only at Charlton could we re-sign our most talented footballer in the division below and still call him out for not scoring enough goals.
I for one am delighted he is extended his contract, I have no doubt he could have found somewhere else to play on far more money, just as he could when he signed up last season.
Bloke is a breath of fresh air.45 -

Cmon U Addicks...!!2 -
Right where’s my bet365 account.....£50 on Charlton to win the league.2

Williams doesn't score many but JFC gets a few and Pratley pops up with some important ones now and then so there's still goals from midfield. If Johnny could add goals to his game, great. If not, so be it.

Very happy with this, class above League one really if he stays fit. Works hard, creates the space and opportunities, still needs to shoot more but if Bowyer/Jackson remain i am sure they will try to get that out of him.0

It’s his injuries and lack of goals that means he’s playing for club at the top end of League 1 and lower end of the Championship. If he was as fit as say Cullen and was a goalscorer then with his dribbling ability he’d be at a top half Championship club at the very least.
This is great news considering we’ll be in League 1 and are still under a registration embargo.2 -
Great news. There’s a reason he was the most fouled player in the Championship last season. Scares defenders.

Happy he is staying as he is a decent player. I suspected he might as last season he was involved in 27 games. In those he probably played 60mins average at most. That means he was involved in less than 50% of our game minutes... yet it was his best playing season for years and had. Long break to revitalise injured bodies mid season. He won’t appeal to big Championship teams and smaller ones wont have the budget to cater for that kind of luxury at the moment. I doubt he had many choices.1

Absolutely delighted that Jonny is staying. He always adds that little bit extra whether starting the game or coming off the bench.1

Morgan hasn’t scored a senior goal yet but I still want him in the team!
williams is a creator, remember the ball he played to put through doughty at Birmingham who crossed for Bonne.
williams is class, especially at this level.I’m very happy with this9 -
Hes got no hair but we don't care, Johnny Williams!2

A shame that his injury record is shocking. We need a minmum of 35 games from him.1 -
Glad he's staying.
Would like to see him wearing boots giving decent ankle protection and better shin pads.2 -

I have a feeling that once he breaks his duck, more goals will follow quickly. Something for Bowyer and Jackson to work on with him.
Once opposing defences start to recognise him as being a goal threat, big gaps and opportunities will open up for the likes of Bonne and Aneke as well.1 - Sponsored links:

Great news - experience and creativity as well as a great attitude. Far too good for L1.
At last, a glimmer of hope.1 -

🤣🤣 our support baffles me at times, finally some good news and the majority of responses are passive aggressive “great that he’s signed but...... we will sell him in January, he’ll get injured, it will be in an empty stadium etc etc etc, ad Nauseam6

Williams has two main strengths - his ability to carry the ball past players in tight spaces and an ability to win free kicks. We need an opportunistic striker to benefit from Williams chance creation - Bonne should fit the bill there. We also need a good direct free kick taker which we don’t have right now.If we can get Williams operating higher up the pitch, as we did early last season, then he can be a real menace (and he was, getting a lot of assists). The rest of the midfield needs to dominate and press well as he’s dangerous on the turnover. We did that well early last season, but once injuries and Gallagher’s departure bit us we just weren’t winning the midfield enough for Johnny to influence things. That should improve in League 1 where you’d have to hope we’ll have the upper hand more often. The lack of goals is a fair criticism though, although he’s not the only one it can be levelled at in our squad. I think every midfielder should have a minimum target of 5 goals a season, attacking mids, which Williams is, should be looking for more. We absolutely must add more goals the to team across all areas - only Bonne, Taylor, and Gallagher came close tho getting on par. Midfield was a particular let down - only a single goal between Williams, Otzumer, Morgan, Cullen, and McGeady and that was a penalty. Not good enough.5

Nice signing. As long as he keeps fit (🙈) will tear up league one0

Not claiming to be in the know about this at all. However, I knew that something was going on today as I was again at The Valley, and today there were a lot more flashy cars around. As I was leaving, Bow got out of his car. I had no idea it would be for this, in fact I was a bit worried. But this is brilliant news and a great way to end the day.
Either way, this is fantastic news.0
