Adam Matthews - gone to Cyprus, and is in ManU's Europa League group (p18)

  • The problem with Matthews is that, unlike some of our other duffers, he is (or was?) a really good player. I liked him a lot in his first season and he was a serious upgrade on poor Chris Solly whose body was failing him. What I despise about him is that he has clearly been operating at 80% since that first season and has twice only signed up at the last minute when he failed to get a better deal elsewhere. In other words, he really doesn’t give a toss. It’s written in his body language. I know we are in the age of the footballing mercenary but he makes it too obvious. Give me a Pratley any day - limited but gives 100% - than a Matthews who just seems to be going through the motions. I apologise to the guy if I’ve got him wrong and he’s just crap, but on the evidence of his first season he isn’t.
This, he was one of our best players in the championship only a couple of years ago. How he has gone from that to looking completely non-league I have no idea.

He does give me the impression he's cruising.

There's a quality player inside Matthews. You see it from time to time.
As one poster has said, we only see it about 80%  of the time.

One of those times was in the 1st half against MKD; he got forward high up the line, showed real determination to win and to run with the ball under pressure.
We don't see that determination and turn of pace very often, do we?

He's got composure, a decent touch and pass, plus ability to cross. What we don't often see is that will to win.

Matthews (and Gunter) have been at fault for so many goals and yet some fans don't even see it.
How many goals has Matthew's been at fault for this season?
I've lost count of the times he's let players cut inside and score.
Now he's also letting them past him on the outside.
MKD game he let his man run through and score because he was too slow to react.
The guy next to me got the hump at my criticism saying he was our best player (on the night presumably) and the bloke in front offered me his glasses.
I thought at the time he was suggesting I couldn't see, but perhaps he wanted to swap because he clearly didn't see it was Matthews at fault again.
Get rid of Matthews, he's as bad as Gunter.

Haven't disliked a player as much for a long time.
  • Matthews and Gunter. Two Welsh mercenaries with no interest in playing for us.  Please, please leave asap. Would pay up both their contracts today and release them to be caddies for their mate Bale. Best place for them as they are sorry excuses for professional footballers. There is never an excuse for not giving 100%. Thus no excuse for these wasters.

Gunter and Matthews. Two complete tossers who i hope never play for us again, simple as that.

Great run and cross but exactly the reason I wouldn’t offer him a new contract - I struggle to remember him trying a similar run all season.

I judge Matthews on the season as a whole not just on one game.
Over the course of the season he has not been good enough.
In fairness that applies to quite a lot of the players.

he's the best of the right 'wing backs' we've had this season .. he's experienced and has a few years left yet

If that's the case then the others have set a very low bar... poor, poor defender.

The epitome of a footballing mercenary

The problem is, he has the ability but never fucking shows it until his contract is in burn down.

On his best days he's a very good player for this division. Unfortunately we see those days so rarely and when we do it just happens to coincide with when he's looking for a new contract either here or somewhere else. Time to move on.

    Get rid.
  • The only way to motivate him would be a weekly rolling contract.  Get rid.

A one game in twelve good performer and that simply is not good enough. Coasts games too often and has been roasted costing us goals on several occasions in the second half of the season. Save the wages, look elsewhere. Don’t dislike him btw, just doesn’t look like a promotion contending RWB to me…

He is only here because he couldn't get a contract elsewhere.

That’s not quite true … Sunderland wanted him but he chose to stay with us

If he is still here next season it will be criminal. Simply got to go.

He has been awful this year, out of position and looks like can’t be arsed. Like many in this squad just don’t rate them or or warm to them.

He is one of the players where its not a, question of whether he's not trying or just crap - it's clearly the former and frankly that's much more aggravating.

Someone who is shit but gives their best I can forgive a lot easier than someone who is shit simply because they can't be bothered.

He has shown how good he can be recently, however he does piss me off when taking so long to sign deals. So,offer him a deal, give him a week,if he dont sign it,piss off.

Three? Did we sign him late in the window during the championship season, I can't remember now

Signed him a lot earlier this season actually compared with the last two seasons:

    2019/20: 5th September (Season started 3rd August)
    2020/21: 26th October (Season started 12 September)
    2021/22: 8th July (Season started 7th August)

I've said this before, but there's something a bit underwhelming about a player signing THREE one year contracts like this. It shows a lack of commitment from either side really to keep signing one year deals, an element of "that will do I suppose".
