Colin Cameron said of the Bolton FACup game (which we lost 1-0).
     10th March 1923 at The Valley - 4th Round Proper (41,023)
Charlton Athletic 0 (0): Wood, Burton, Herod, Purdy, Whalley, Plum, Castle, Steele, Goodman, Thomson, S. Smith.
Bolton Wanderers 1 (1) (Jack 35): Pym, Rowley, Finney, Nuttall, Seddon, Jennings, Butler, Jack, J.R. Smith, J. Smith, Vizard.
Collapsed railing: In the first half, after Jack’s goal, Charlton’s  Goodman was only a few  yards from the Bolton goal, lining himself up for an equaliser, when twenty feet of railing collapsed on to the pitch. The match was stopped for several minutes while the injured were carried away. The story has it that Charlton had to pay away all their profits from the match in compensation. Bolton, who went on to win Wembley's first ever F.A. Cup Final, were Charlton's fourth successive First Division opponent in the competition. The Fourth Round represented the quarter-final stage in the 1922/23 season.
On another Pathe video the collapse is shown.

The sword is still in place on the gate .Think this would indicate that The Valley was still being played on by Charlton.

There's no cars in the bottom photo and it's in colour

Great photo so the question is who is the game between and date of match?

    My guess v Portsmouth 7-9-68

Clues are in that photo, any other idea?

    It's a game in 1972-74.
You can tell that by the sparse crowd.

It's raining though. So what you cant see in that picture is the 52,000 people crammed into the Covered End.

Looks like "Killer" standing on the "D" ready to rush in (not the player leaning over hands on knees).

Didn't we have the all-red kit in 68/69 season? This looks like early 70s to me.

    Wow, modern greens…. Not

Looks like the flag is made from a twig

If that is Killer, think he signed February 1973. Did he not take penalties though? Anyone identify the penalty taker? Flanagan?
  • I'm sure this photo has been on here before.
My memory is crap but if I recall it is 70's and the pen taker is Bob Curtis as per. Can';t remember the oppo

Bob Curtis scoring the penalty. Hales, Shipperley, Bowman among those following in.

I think previously it was decided that it was against Shrewsbury , about 73/74.

It must be before the Jimmy Seed stand was built.
Which was 75 or 76. I stand to be corrected on that.
So I was thinking early 70's.

Correct on early 70's for the game (see other posts) but out on The Jimmy Seed, which opened in 1981 (originally just a roof over the terrace, with seats added later).

I think I was there, but on the East Terrace. Loved Bob Curtis. Yes, reckon that was his penalty. Never missed till Preston 75,

I went to a Sunday morning game against Shrewsbury, we were 3-1 down and got a 3-3 draw with Hales and Horsfield scoring.

Could be but in that game shirts had white strip under the arm.

Clues are in that photo halftime score board the flats missing ,advertising hoarding ,kit plus players and ground.

Pretty sure it's against Swindon 22Sep74 yes I looked it up to make sure we scored a pen. Me and me Dad were one of the few braving the rain at the front.
