Jim Davidson...

Being called ‘woke’ for not liking or agreeing with Jim Davidson illustrates how the word has been hijacked. Now it’s little more than a justification for acting like a cunt without being called out. It’s as meaningless as it’s predecessor - “the PC brigade”.35

Jim Davidson is a horrible little prick. I know he will appreciate my right to free speech. I'm just saying what everyone is thinking. 1995 was there when he turned up outside the stage door of the Victoria Palace like Charlie big potatoes trying to shove the stage hands out of the way. Lucky he had a couple of bodyguards to protect him from the snowflakes.

Perhaps when all the responses are in we could plot a graph to establish definitively what he is, and then this subject need not arise again.5

Some of his stories are pretty funny, especially (ive posted it before so won't do it again) when he got stopped by the police and breathalysed but wasn't driving.
my dad had his sinderella pantomime on video. I remember my parents were out so I watched it (aged 11 ish), it was great for an 11 year old in 1990. His material and attitude hasn't moved with the times and I wouldn't watch him now.

Jack Whitehall, just a funny guy

To be anti woke is to be in favour of racism.
There has been a good series to be found on BBC Sounds by Matthew Syed looking at the word woke and it’s origins (Huddie Leadbetter, Leadbelly, features).
The word woke put briefly is to stay ‘awake’ to racial oppression and actual attacks which is made clear by the programme and the evidence presented. See the ‘Scottsboro boys’ case.
I know words can change meaning over time, or add extra meaning if you like, but usually if there is collective acceptance (see the word ‘gay’). I would not say there is a collective acceptance of any other meaning to the word ‘woke’ beyond woke meaning anti racist.
I believe it is the racists that want to seize the word woke, distort it and turn it into something bad because it is a word that kind of stands up to racism and they don’t like that.
If people don’t like something, they can say what and why, but if they say it is because it is too ‘woke’ they are saying nothing beyond wanting to undermine anti racists.15 -

Those videos above of Davidson are embarrassing. Whenever Question time is somewhere thick you'll always get some old fat bloke or a woman who stinks of cat and gin, even from the TV, asking why they don't settle in France and it's the same answer each time. Perhaps they don't want to know the answer? Even if you disagree with it ask a follow up question instead of starting from square one again.
Back to Davidson. I first heard of him in the 90s when Big Break was on TV. Found him witty and hilarious and didn't really care about his act before i was born. It seems some people couldn't forgive it and so he's given up and is now appealing to the folk who call people snowflakes, want Love Thy Neighbour back on TV but cry at a joke about the royal family. All pretty sad really.0 -

Remember this story when he'd been to visit the troops but his act was really inappropriate as there was family and kids there too. So they took him up in a typhoon for a flight, and ragged it so hard that he shat himself.13

Personally not that much of a fan of his, but like most comedians can occasionally make me laugh
Not sure should be castigated for his routine in the 70's though
Growing up in Tower Hamlets in the 70's, I would often be sent off to "the Paki Shop" to buy stuff, but even 10 years later people realised it was not very appropriate to use such a term, but doesn't mean those who used it previously were de-facto racists

Not castigating his 80s 'act', trouble is when its evidently your actual opinions and you still hold them 50 years later in a changed world, dont be shocked when people call you out on it. Even his youtube posts are dated, hed have been better setting that up 5 years ago pre brexit before EDL etc got laughed out of politics.
Everyone is a product of time and environmental, most people evolve though through life experiences and education.5 -
I’ll tell you who my favourite stand-up is: Stewart Lee. Seen him live. I’ll hazard a bet that Jim Davison hates him.12

Not a fan of his. I prefer Roy Chubby Brown2

Woke - aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/wokeIn simple terms, it just means being politically conscious and aware, like stay woke.

I'd love to see Davidson and Lee in a UFC cage fight.
Davidson could stand in his corner and shout his beliefs at Lee. Davidson's fans in the crowd would cheer Davidson to the rafters, celebrating the fact that there is a world in which it's still 1976, whilst muttering to each other "it's right what he says you know, but everyone else is too scared to say it".
Lee would stand there, mostly in silence, occasionally raising his eyebrow, before moving onto a monotonous whinging monologue, which his ultra aware fans will laugh at hysterically, safe in the knowledge of their moral and intellectual superiority over the Davidson fans. Lee's occasional punchline will be loudly applauded by his fans, whilst muttering to each other "He's so clever - Davidson's fans simply won't get his narrative and comedic nuance".
Then they could helpfully lump seven shades of shit out of each other.
Happy days.8 -

Went to see him in Newcastle in the early 80's while working up there.
Made the huge mistake of getting up to go for a pee mid performance, never, ever have I taken so much abuse, I was scared to come back in.4 -

woke has i m o come to describe those folk always looking for offence, those eager to criticise and condemn those whose view of the world is different from their own rather narrow and naive perspective, perhaps those taking an over self important point of view6 -
When Suella Braverman was describing push back to her boats policy, as well as describing some as 'lefty' or 'do gooder' lawyers she described her imagined collective of people as 'the tofu eating wokerati'.
She had the option to say she disagreed with others who view the word differently, and say why, even say that those opponents are taking a self important point of view.
But presumably she chose 'wokerati', which had some kind of meaning in her head, but not the meaning of the actual word.5 -
